    Infinity! The game that has been here for ages yet doesn't get the attention it deserves :) Such nice miniatures. I really don't like working with metal, but Corvus Belli knows what they're doing after so many years doing it this way (though as many know they're also going into Siocast now which has been great). Honestly think everyone in the hobby that likes sci-fi/cyberpunk/etc should give it a good look. The miniatures are so beautiful and a joy to paint up, while the game system does so many things that no other game does (while also keeping both players 100% engaged all game long). Infinity - the future is now! :P

    Every infinity hobbyist I have talked to has universally hated Siocast. As someone who played 3rd edition 40k, Metal minis just have such a satisfying weight to them. Plastic is great when you have hundreds of models on the table moving around at once. But when its a dozenish figures? Metal is the way to go.

  • @PocketPigments

    @PocketPigments

    4 ай бұрын

    @@vicioushellsing what I've found is some of the earlier siocast releases they had were a little rough/brittle, but the newer ones have been pretty solid. I wouldn't want to see smaller infantry in siocast as I think it would be quite brittle on the thinner areas (gun barrels, etc), but I absolutely prefer it for things like TAGs, Drones, etc. Large metal models have basically always been a giant pain to deal with - even pinned I've seen some pretty nasty breaks. Also metal miniatures chip paint a lot easier, so IMO siocast done well is a bit better for painting-focused hobbyists, though I do prefer the weight/feel of metal.

    N3 Infinity are nightmare models. The current generation has been spectacular with square fits so its not ambiguous how things fit together. Infinity strength is also their weakness because the metal holds soooo much detail.

    Infinity models are great to paint and it's nice that you can really spend the time on each model since a full army is the size of a guard squad. Makes progress really satisfying on top of the fun of painting great models. The metal really is fine. You need to varnish and cant use plastic glue but once you find a glue that works well for you (like gorilla super glue) its pretty easy

    This kind of surprise reminds me of when I tried building and painting some Malifaux minis. Wyrd have done a good job of turning their metal line fully into plastic (although they've done a poor job of telling you how things should fit together.) Having a break from Games Worshop with something that is stylistically unique really gave me a chance to try some different kinds of painting techniques, especially since there is no Official Beauty Shots of built-and-painted minis.

    Definitely check out Infinity. The models are great and it's easy to build up force to get started and then upgrade it a model or two at a time. Lots of build options, lots of nuance, and very few "bad" units as long as you know how to play them. There's a bit of a learning curve with the game, but it's an incredibly elegant system imo and has a very cooperative style of interaction with your opponent.

    Really nice to see a comparison between plastic and metal, not a face off we see as often in an age of resin and 3D printing. I think the metal model has some really great sharp detail and definition, it's a shame metal is such a ballache to work with. Another pro of metal (in my opinion) is the weight. maybe not so good if you have a whole army but it's nice havin some weighty miniatures that feel really premium.

    The Ariadna lore is so much fun. A lost ship spawns a civilisation, when the rest of humanity find the lost people again, thought to be dead, they have settled on a resource rich planet named Dawn, that the highly advanced and greedy humans are all very jealous of. Infinity minis were quite tough for me to paint when I made an attempt several years ago. I will eventually drag them out and try again. Dawn Expects!

    Ariadna has murder wolves (Antipodes), but did you hear that Haqqislam has the gorgeous, lovely, oh so amazing MURDER SCORPION many affectionately refer to as "Maggie" (Maghariba Guard). I may be slightly biased towards Haqqislam as a faction, since I absolutely LOVE my shenanigans. Holo-projectors (which of the three is the real one? Is that an unprotected light infantry commander, or is it really a heavily armed special forces guy with the biggest shotgun money can buy? And then we have the impersonators. Don't mind Bob, he's totally fine, even though he's walking a tad funny, and is clumsy with those smoke grenades...) Light infantry shenanigans are fun.

    Speaking as a long time fan of Infinity miniatures I can confirm that current generation miniatures are very easy to assemble for metal miniatures. Can also confirm ten years ago they absolutely were not for the faint hearted. As for varnishing, I have found that even plastic miniatures suffer from chipping although they do so in different ways. And the type of plastic makes a big difference. GW's HIPS miniatures tend to get very good primer adhesion but if you handle the model too much the paint wears off on hard edges (like space marine armour plates). Resin is similar to HIPS whereas I have had issues with PVC plastic with paint falling if you so much as look at the model funny.

    Ariadna is a great faction as they were a lost colony ship that was discovered decades later so while the other factions have predator camo, mech suits, hackers, etc., they have our current day tech.

    Loved it! I would say, though, that for a full game of infinity, you only have to paint maybe 15 minis max(and not more than 3 of the same model). Not the 40 or 50 you need for 40k. The concept of army painting is different, and you can take a little extra time on each mini

    Get a spray can of acrylic varnish it's really easy mate I normally use satin as it doesn't dull my paint jobs

    I am mildly terrified of a metal mini I have. It is an Ork Maw Crusher and the only way to build is pinning.

    Infinity has probably the best metal minis on the market, they assemble really well - so long as you're using N3 sculpts and onwards, but by now I doubt you can even buy any of the older traditional sculpts they had. Painting them is likewise great fun, they really like the more glaze/contrast/wash heavy approach than traditional layering, so if you're primed for that, you'll love the process. As for the side by side, it's actually a point to GW's credit - their recent sculpts Primaris and onwards have been very close to proper human proportions and therefore looks rather good besides Infinity stuff. Computer assisted design really helps refining the proportions and scale!

    they use Siocast, which is like resin (need superglue, not plastic glue), but it's a bit different. They only use it for larger models at the moment.
