The verdict is in: Darktide is too expensive for what you get. For the same price you can get the Kill Team Starter Set. Or for a bit more you can get Blackstone Fortress or Cursed City got that boardgame feel!

Thing is this game is more catered for the casual gamers or never into warhammer tabletop. BF and CC are way heavier gameplay, longer to setup/play and larger footprint. Kill Team can’t be played solo and again, it’s a pure miniature game that me and my friends were never interested in. This DT miniatures+boardgame seems to be the perfect fit for a short 30 minute game of fun. They should rename it as a boardgame, not miniatures game. And I agree price point should be lower.

Agree too expensive. Yet they can charge that as it’s hard to get new Blackstone fortress and no way to get cursed city.

Even as a Darktide fan. They could of at LEAST made models to match the Darktide box art characters.

I don’t really get some of the negativity in these comments on this one. This seems like a great little solo KT lite game for casual home play. Good for kids, good to intro friends to the hobby in an accessible way, good for a bit of casual solo play of an evening. Looks ripe for stuff to get added as options in White Dwarf or perhaps an expansion or two which I’d be excited if they did. I play one of the Space Marines Adventures solo games at home semi regularly and over time have customised it and, even as a seasoned warhammer person, I have a good time with it. This looks fun and I’ve really wanted more solo games in the 40k universe. I’m all in.

Same. Just a little disappointed with the price, mostly. I feel like they could have taken a few production cues from their Underworlds game. For example, the snap-fit models are aimed at the same people at which this seems to be aimed-that sort of thing.

I'm also a bit surprised by just how negative it's been here. I don't think it's the best product and it's a bit of a mismatch of quality to price to mechanics, but it's not the worst thing GW has done 🤷‍♂️

Crazy as it may sound, this is a great option for Guard, KT, and playing the box game. For Guard, 3 boxes, which seems a little mad, would net you a unit of ogryn, 3 units of guardsmen, 1 psyker, 1 preacher with vinidicator, and both a cadian castellan and commisar with pistol and power weapon (kitbash 2 psyker and 2 kasrkin models with guard weapons). Total MSRP would be $330, the price of 3 boxes, leaving you with the 18 poxwalkers that could sell together, seperately as 2 units of 9, or 2 8 man poxwalker killteams getting you some type of discount. For KT, this is easily a poxwalker KT and blooded KT, kitbashing a kasrkin and Ogryn into your enforcers. And yeah the actual game itself. Is it a great idea? Probably not, but for anyone thinking this, Im sure there are some haha

I dont have any imperial Guard or traitor guardsmen models yet. Im very new to the hobby, and Im looking for something familiar, and trying to ease my family and a lesser Kill Team setting. Sounds worth it to me.

So the conversion from kill team to Darktide is very clear and obvious. So if you wanted to create extra datacards for those that already have the models that would be ezpz. My bias cunning in perhaps but I struggle to see this as being a big seller due to the price point so I doubt it will get much support. Which is fair. Strong go play BSF vibes

This seems like such a bummer. At 50-60 bucks, like the B&N board game price this would have been a fine product. At it's current price I just don't understand who would want this. Not having pushfits really kind of makes this a a bad product for casual/board gamers (Especially having to build those Blooded Minis), the price point makes it bad for experienced gamers who just want the minis, and it looks like it won't be very replayable. I was hoping this would be more like a B&N game or go the opposite direction and essentially be Kill Team on hexes with an AI. Also no rules for operatives in an Inquisition Kill team feels like a big missed opportunity, as lots of the B&N games had supplemental rules to use in the big product in case you decided to progress in that direction. Thanks for the honest review as always Andy.

The price point seems weird. It puts it into a premium boardgame level where all of those games outclass it in components alone. It doesn't have the minis for regular WH40k players. It makes it feels like a cash grab more than an honest attempt. Which is a shame as more coop/solo games from GW would be a boon for them and the community.

Hi Andy, would you agree that this seems to be a "Board Game With Miniatures" rather than a "Miniatures Game"? As someone who plays the PC game, board games and miniatures games, I think that this wasn't aimed at hardcore minis guys in the sense that its not cross compatible and doesn't fit into a system they already play... but can still be enjoyed by a group of friends meeting up for a bit of a more chill time than 8 hours of 40k. Does that seem fair?

  • @GlassHalfDead

Yes it's a very light and casual game. I would encourage people that like this to consider a different boardgame, or if it needs to be Warhammer then either Cursed City or Blackstone Fortress. But if this appeals to you and you want something super light then go for it!

I would totally play a version of Kill Team with a hex grid map board. The basic set could come with 2d cardboard terrain pieces and there could be a 3D optional terrain set molded on hexagonal bases to fit the grid. I’d be more interested in this game if the price point was a little bit lower in $. $75-80? Much more tempting. I just look at $110 and immediately convert it into “how many actual boxes of minis is that?”.

There kind of is one already, “Fireteam” from the Barnes and Noble exclusive games. It’s usually around $30 on sale and it has stats for around 6 different teams if I remember correctly, on a grid map and much simpler rules. It is actually super fun for what it is and it could get get people into Kill Team. Only issue is the exclusivity…B&N shipped it to South America for me so I got lucky but not sure about other countries.

How easy is it to use the rules (especial for solo playing), with other kill team models and datasheets? Like can i easily use termagants instead of blooded? A sister of battle instead of the given characters? If it is easy it would be great for me. Since i lack playmates.

I agree it’s definitely for casual people, but I still think this product can be a gateway for new Killteam players. Attacking and defending is the same. There’s equipment and special abilities. And technically you get a full Blooded Killteam without the rules and the bigger model. Just find the rules on KZread and your set. Or use the other models as proxy

I am mainly into the lore (I collected 300+ Black Library books in the last 5 years, mainly 40k but some Warhammer Fantasy as well). I am into video-games (1000+ hours in Vermintide 1/2 and Darktide combined + many other Warhammer video games and not only of course). I am NOT into Warhammer wargaming tabletop, due to high complexity, extreme dice chucking, time and money requirements and painting requirements which is something I just can't and don't want to do. However I like board games and I buy and play some. For Warhammer I have some board games including the 3 'Space Marine Adventures' games and the 'Warhammer Quest: Lost Relics' (and I play 'Blackstone Fortress' digitaly at Tabletop Simulator). Also I am mainly solo board gamer. So this Dakrtide Miniature Game is perfect for me. I completely realize it's a ultra-light and very simplistic, so in essence it's a butchered version of the real thing. But since it can be played just solo (with the "A.I." behavior) and it doesn't really need to be painted (I have all the abovementioned Warhammer board games unpainted and it works okay) it's a good little way to emulate a Warhammer wargaming experience despite being just a shadow of the real deal. So I am happy of this product (pre-ordered already). Its target audience is us casuals and not you seasoned veterans whatsoever. And the main idea of GW is to try and pull us into the real deal. Thanks for the video.

The issue about the game targeting casuals (which it totally is) is the price point. Recycled minis and barebones components, the complete lack of an insert and, if my experience with most of GW board games is right, mediocre rules. It totally is an attemp to suck money from people interested in the hobby. Same happened with the Warcry Crypt of Blood thing, overpriced components for a mediocre experience. Games Workshop have made similar-sized casual board games for under half the price, with minis, cards, boards and actual inserts, like Fireteam, Blitz Bowl, Lost Relics, or even Combat Arena, so I KNOW they can make affordable little games at a great value, this is not it sadly. You mentioned you had some already, so you can probably see how this price point is ridiculous. Now, sorry about the rant, if you think this is for you then of course that is great, but they do have other games with better value I would say.

These are all very different systems. If you're even considering bighammer then I'd say you're beyond Darktide. And then kill team vs 40k is really down to what sort of experience you want to have in your games or the type of models you want to have looking cool on your shelf. 40k looks cooler with a big army and has a more easily accessible community, kill team is better mechanically (subjectively). Do note that kill team doesn't really have a DG team, but 40k doesn't have gellerpox

I’ve been in the hobby for 35+ years now and I’m just playing through the Lost Relics boxed game, despite trying 40k/AOS it’s too much bloat and complexity for me, the smaller boxed games on the other hand are right up my alley eg the Warhammer Quest line with Smaller concise rules and ease of play giving a satisfying gameplay experience right out of the box ( sadly the UK doesn’t get them all “Blitz Bowl! A missed opportunity) Im very much a target for this, I would like to see more co-op games of this nature, price wise yeh it’s a little steep but it is roughly in line with prices in board game hobby, games costing £30-40 5 years ago are now in the £50-60 range so I’ll take it based on the hours of entertainment I’ll get from it……More please GW.

Before I watch or read anything... I'm a bit worried for Darktide. Andy was pretty brutal on Salvation! - which I really appreciated. I did still buy it, but it was a huge relief to have that sanity check with so many "yes, I've enjoyed my free copy... great value (free) box, would recommend buy (sadly, got it for free, so don't get to enjoy spending on it)" pseudo-gaslighting 'reviews'. On inspection, this box looks like it doesn't even come close to Salvation's 'absolutely not-spectacular, but still decent value' level, so I've got the Savlon handy...

I somewhat disagree... I think this is for people looking for a coop experience that don't want to to spend 2 hours setting up BSF or CS and have to deal with the chaos through that. Yes its a good solo experience but if I wanted to play a solo board game honestly there are 50 better ones. based on what other channels having been saying and reviewing it. Im gonna agree with them more.. GW is most likely sampling the 40K market with an Underworld style Coop board game that they will probably drip feed expansions for via white dwarf or sold. The game is surprisingly fun with 2 people
