Warhammer 40k | Astra Militarum | Rogal Dorn Tank Tutorial

Imperial Guard were my first Warhammer 40k army way back in Rogue Trader, I love the new Astra Militarum range and couldn't wait to get some paint on the Royal Dorn tank.

This is great to see how duncans paints perform through an air brush. they seem so enticing and versatile. Cheers for the tutorial, many techniques to pinch for other projects, Thanks!

I’ve been really impressed with them in general, but genuinely surprised how good they are through the airbrush. Very impressed.

I think tanks and other large models or kits is where the airbrush really shines. It would likely be a much harder and bigger task doing the whole thing by hairy brush. Lovely paint job as usual. The tank turned out really nicely indeed.

Thank you mate, and you’re totally right, I couldn’t even imagine painting a tank without my airbrush now.

Great tutorial, i always like the style of your vehicles. Worth noting that you can apply pigments mixed with white spirit and they dry very dry once the thinner evaporates, unlike water or pigment fixer.

Thank you. Yes I often use that method as well, I’ve just picked a habit of brushing on dry on bases and in tank tracks.

This is a refreshing change of pace. I really enjoyed seeing you apply your skill on a large vehicle. I particularly like the white-first approach on those lenses. Anyway, thats a good looking tank and crew.

Great work there, interesting to see oils find their way over to wargaming from scale modelling after so long. I think in my hobby lifetime we've gone from inks, to washes and now oils are coming on strong!

They’re definitely starting to find more traction in the modern 40K crowd, far more ‘regular painters’ using panel liners and other weathering effects. It’s been around for quite a while in the ‘Forgeworld scene’, the original Modelling Masterclass book they did was published in 2008, and reprinted in 2017. It was Horus Heresy that first introduced me to that style back around 2015/16 I think. But it’s really nice to see grow. I think the sheer amount of ready made/mixed and easy to use products has had a huge influence, companies like AK and Mig really expanding their ranges and making it more mainstream.

😂 Thank you. I’ll see how many more people are interested in that tutorial (the 40K videos I do aren’t that popular), but if I get enough interest I’ll look to film one.

Thank you. I’ll definitely be covering it one way or another. Part of that will depend on what I get sent, but I’d be tempted to pick up the starter anyway.
