They dont have a choice. Star wars and 40k will be entirely different from what we expect from total war games. It will be more like star war battlefront or battlefleet. From previous leaks from ca former developers, the total war engine is now soo overpatched, that it is unfixable. They have no choice but to start from scratch. This wont be a total war game, but a new game with the same name.

Norsca and all the Undead Factions also. Tbh my original idea was to make Tamurkhan a Norscan lord, make his faction a Norsca Nurgle Fusion like the champions of chaos DLC and rename Norsca to 'Nothern Tribes' so it also includes the Kurgans

Gonna drop my speculate here Just fusion these so-call sub races together add some Hinduism unit culture and called it Ind it would be believable than this bs I love Cathay but where's the other dragons siblings ? Not this who tf r u Lord Edit: look at the unit somehow it like this is just a foundation for IND in the future (if they secretly plan) ton of tigermen , Devil Giant Ogre Monkey king Island is also somewhere in Ind If this is true then they can just Move Wukong to Ind and all these Sub Factions Unit to Ind own Factions and plus new units here and there (7+ units + already exist units from that dlc sub race) and Ind will be done with less effort when it happen they're gonna have like 19 units which is a lot

I have no idea why they don't just cram all the Cathay related dlcs together, like, the Monkey King should have tigermen and ogres in his faction anyway so why separate them like this at all? I mean I just want a Khorne dlc god damn it, I'm fine with waiting for Nagash since I think it'd be a mistake to try and end the game without putting a Nagash dlc out. But I know that Nagash would sell, and sell well, so it makes sense to keep him in their back pocket for later.

No they just changed what they were going to do. It took them 2 weeks to address it and all we got was a pick on twitter. You don’t think is weird that 2 of the factions picked don’t need a rework and the other one was in the dlc legend said. This dlc requires the least amount of change. Name any other factions they could have picked to make this easier. Dawi,empire,nurgle are out easy. Norsca, VC, vcoast, slannesh,brettonia. Are to much work. Lizard men and shaven are good contenders but lizards need a rework. They don’t want many game 2 races. And they don’t like giving dlc to dlc factions so TK,WE,CD, so who does that leave us. Cathay,blood god,skaven, green skins, bird man. They won’t do china because of the back lash. And bird man is the first chaos to get a dlc he won’t get two while some have zero. And skaven don’t need a dlc worth of content just a FLC at most. This is the most convenient DLC they could make that people wouldn’t get mad at.

There’s no possible way these leaks were ever actually real They didn’t change plans because it would take much longer than 2 weeks to completely change their entire plan for the game and design a completely new DLC to drop on schedule. These leaks sounded like absolute bullshit when they came out and the recent announcements prove it.

It really does. In its current state, I could see 1 more Cathayan LL in the next 3-4 DLC as appropriate, but that is about it. Obviously the Ogres need some love, but both their existing LLs need a lot of help along with a new one, so that part is fine. After that, the undead factions need help, all three of them. Would love to see DLC for Tomb Kings (Doesn't actually need a rework, just content mostly), Vampire Coast (Needs everything), and subfactions for Vampire Counts (Which probably should just be named Vampires)

I hope theyre not serious about that approach, or include him as dual Lord for both Ogres and DoW after that dlc is out. Choosing your 'race' would be something pretty new, and could be implemented for more LL too, such as Aranessa or the Champions of Chaos lords.

They(CA) already said they wanted to push for Asia (lets be honest, videogame marketing is busted there, especially china/japan/south korea/philippine), and it's totally understandable considering they need huge cash for their future projects and we all know that Cathay is the only faction with insane potential in terms of content, and it's the only "easter/asian" based faction. So Its obvious CA will push for it. In wh2 they did the same thing for lizardmen and skaven btw (3 damn dlcs)... So why even get mad for this when they already did it in the previous game lol. This…. Feels dubious at best. Then again CA does have a long history of consulting with the “smoke some bath salts” oracle to help them make decisions.

I'm kinda disappointed in no Norsca, Vampire Counts, Bretonnia, or anything for the factions that haven't been touched in years. Nothing with Khorne either, and Slaanesh only gets an FLC. But Dogs of War is really amazing and Halfling Hotpot Catapults are going to be fun to mess around with.

They are really trying to penetrate chinese market, also Cathay is WH3 most popular faction (only WH3 races), so it makes sense financially. Dogs of War is a fan favorite and long awaited so it will prolly sell like Chaos Dwarfs. Im just surprised as I would have guessed Leak 1 and Leak 3 would be reversed since Monkey King is an existing character.

We are not talking millions of players, we are not even talking hundreds of thousands. @@plaecholder I really, really doubt it will print money. Shadows of change didn't, and it had Cathay in it. The better example is Three Kingdoms. CA/Sega invested heavily in marketing in China, and it paid off. They got the best initial sales numbers in the entire series to date. But the DLC didn't sell, at all. They were hoping Three Kingdoms would be lucrative DLC engine, but it absolutely wasn't. For WH3, this is much worse. There just aren't enough sales of the Base Game in China to sell the amount of DLC needed, and there is no realistic chance that this DLC will drive base game sales. Maybe if they offer a Game+DLC bundle in China, but I doubt they will.

Couldn't fucking care less about new kid on the block Cathay when Khorne only has a single lord to choose from.

So long as the Dogs of War are not excessively teathered to the Southern Realms they can and should do both Tilea, Estalia and the Border Princes. The Dogs themesleves are the main attraction, though, and they must be a horde faction that sets up undercity/cult buildings in their client's territory, rather than another faction that just tries to paint the map.

As the literal air particles in the room when the DLCs were discussed, I can indeed confirm that I heard nothing because I don't have ears.

So on my count, in total, counting FLC here, we get: 1 Ogre LL 2 DoW LLs 1 Dark Elf/Slaanesh LL 5 Cathay LLs That seems frankly absurd. Like at least space out the Cathayan LLs. What I think most of us really want is what they did in Thrones of Decay with fixing up boring old Vanilla lords, and making older but popular races better. Really want to see Tomb Kings, Brettonia, and Vampire Coast be worth playing, really never wanted 5 new Cathayan LLs.

I really hope this is false (Naturally, I don't know one way or the other). This is extremely Cathay heavy, and I would prefer not to be exploring new lore when there are so many things in older races still needing refreshing. I would like to see full reworks of Tomb Kings, Vampire Coast, and Bretonnia in the style we have seen recent race reworks. Thrones of Decay was successful because it took some already popular content, and made it better. Not sure Cathayan Tigermen and Ogres is really what the game means. Again, I have no idea if this is true, but if it is, I don't care for it.

There's a zero chance this is real. The DoW character choices is somewhat believable, but makes ZERO SENSE they release Golgfag before it and not along it and the minuscule roster. As for the Cathay DLCs and amount of OCs, it also makes zero sense in multiple fronts 1-We never had a single lord pack that only had one race 2-GW has been cracking down on what it lets other companies do with their IP so that amount of OC is fishy 3-Why the fuck they wouldn't use the dragon-bros and wait so long for Monkey King? 4-There are TONS of characters with massive selling potential (Thanquol, Nagash, Neferata, Boris, Ushoran etc.) they can use, why would they bother with OCs?

@@MollymaukT Yeah, a ton of this makes so little sense, that I am honestly wondering if Legends annoyed CA so much with his leaks they fed him a whole bunch of nonsense on purpose, so when the next DLC is Slaanesh/High Elves he gets completely discredited, lol. If these leaks are real, a ton of the recent moves don't make sense. Why stuff Gelt into Cathay, when you have a whopping 5 Cathayan LLs planned? Even assuming 3 of them are placed somewhere else (The Ogre one, the FLC one, and the other one in the Monkey King pack), there still isn't really room for two or more additional LLs in Cathay. Although honestly, I have no idea where there IS room for this many more LLs. It feels like the whole map is incredibly crowded with LLs now. Southlands has some room still, but that is about it. And 5 Cathayan lords in 3 DLCs seems like a really, really poor decision no matter how you slice it.

Yea, i was hoping the DLCs would focus on legacy races, Bretonnia/Norsca/Tomb Kings/Vampcoast with each of the Chaos Gods, its a well designed DLC format. They're kinda taking a leap of faith with mercenary subfaction DLCs for the next 2-3 releases. New lore factions are the most popular requests by players so potentially higher sales but the risks are there if they don't deliver. I guess this is a desperate attempt to rebound from their recent blunders.

I think it means Ind. But they're still working on fleshing out the map in that area, so you get these "mercenary factions as subcategories of Cathay" for now. And the third DLC with the monkey King, all these factions will get a proper place on Ind, and be their own Ind race on the start screen.

That is an absolutely insane amount of content just for Cathay. I dont know about this...

They don't have the lore base (or the map space) necessary to develop distinct races for Ind, Nippon, Khuresh, Estalia, Tilea, AND Araby. It makes sense that they would have them represented through a "mercenary" mechanic. This way you can still have each of those flavours plausibly represented in-game. The names dropped in this vid might be placeholders, but the format seems legit. I think it's real.

I feel like CA should release the Monkey king DLC first instead of the "Lords of Shang Yang" in order to respect the long awaited hype for the monkey king, and to further not disappoint us with no renowned lords.

I don't know why they're focusing so much on cathay, I get it's one of the newer factions but I'd much rather have stuff from older races and Khorne/Slaanesh

Back before WH3 came out, when CCs were saying Cathay had no chance of being in, I insisted it would be. Not because it made sense in TW, but because executives have this idea that China = $$$. Never mind the fact this almost never works out for western countries, they just think somehow they are going to sell multiple billion copies there. So this leak might be legit, but if it is, it is a spectacularly dumb plan that reeks of executive interference. Instead of focusing on the existing base (Which is where sales actually come from in a decades old franchise), some overpaid idiot who has never painted a miniature in his life has decided that cramming it full of "China content" will somehow bring in completely new customers from outside.

Well 3K 2 was cancelled and I believe they made a lot of money on the first title catering to a billion Chinese people and more, so I guess the Cathay DLC is their way to tap back into that big market. Just a guess though.

Shadows of Change didn't do well because of the lack of content. Then they fixed it and it went well. Then they made Thrones of Decay which went extremely well. Why can't they just continue on a winning path? They have something that makes them money but they don't want to keep making money? Do they have children in command of the company?

Almost certainly due to Shadows of Change imo. Companies like CA aren't so quick on their feet, but I think they are shifting back to the 2 Lord packs of WH2 because of SoC failure. Thrones of Decay was already in the works, but now the 2LL packs are already in the works, so they probably won't shift back, despite the success of Thrones.

From my perspective, if this turns out to be 100% accurate, then it will be very disappointing if there are only about 4 DLCs left. I would love more Cathay content; Cathay needs more content. But this would basically be telling us: they’re finishing the Cathay roster, giving us a bit of dogs of war, and then end times. And that’s it. No more for Norsca. No more for Lizardmen. No more for Empire. And the craziest of it all? Slaanesh and Khorne get nothing more except FLC lords and heroes. So I can only hope that there are closer to 6+ DLCs left. Because if everything that’s been rumored recently is all that’s left, then there’s not really much more to be excited about for this game.

Having that many Cathay lords back-to-back tells me that CA is planning on cashing out with the Chinese market as much as they can before they jump ship to 40k. They likely did have plans for all the DLC they've been hinting at since WH2, but the recent dip in sales due to their own bad actions have convinced them to scrap that for some easier sales before they divert most of their focus to 40k, which promises to be a more lucrative market than fantasy.

I fell like I know why they are doing this - speculation- but I feel like Cathay is the least Warhammery of the factions and I would have LOVED to see something for Norsca, Slaanesh, Dark Elves, Lizardmen, and Vampires. With the way things are going, I don't know how they can expect the consumers to buy the first 3 to justify a 4th, 5th, and 6th dlc to BEGIN to deal with some of the issues since the FIRST game. Wild.

Slaanesh getting shafted isn't really that surprising. It's, by far, the least "corporate safe" faction, and CA - much like GW - would rather shove all Slaaneshi stuff into a pit and forget about it. If they have to entertain it at all, then they'll usually do the bare minimum and only touch the elements of Slaanesh, like pride or martial perfection, in the most superficial way possible.

I'm honestly praying that dogs of war get an integration with Sartosa in some way, Aranessa SORELY needs not only a boost in strength but some identity that actually fits her instead of one garbage early game unit. WW1 would've been so good with all Nations, basically Battlefield 1 in Total War. Also this could open the gate for WW2 in the future, but in all honesty I really want Renaissance 1452 -1600's ending with Siege of Vienna timeline.

40K RTS games exist. Good games at that, that's something to go of off or help guide early development is look at how other devs have done it in the past and improve on it. WW1 RTS has never really been made, the setting has certain rules adhering to history that sound difficult to model, and I think CA literally needs a scientific breakthrough in their engine to simulate WW1 combat such as 10-20,000 individual units charging no mans land, couple hundred rounds of artillery landing on the same area at once. To make WW1 work it has to be big, it's not like WW2 there isn't squad based combat which that only appeared towards the end of the Great War. 40K is like the opposite, Space Marine chapters are 1000 strong, squad based combat, there's large entities which the devs already have a code base for from Warhammer Total War, ect. If CA has 40k development questions they can literally email Games Workshop and get guidance probably within hours vs hiring a WW1 historian to adapt history to the way the devs want the game to feel. Just different mediums.

It honestly sounds like a technical issue - if they were working on a new engine and built a bunch of infrastructure on top of it... then decided the new engine wouldn't work: that's the sort of investment that companies occasionally just need to realize are sunk costs and walk away from.

I don't understand why Total War doesn't try a Victorian Era Total War, after Napoleon and before WW1. So many advancements in technology, exploration, history, and warfare. You could have different maps and expansions to represent important parts of history such as the American Civil War, Boer War, Crimean War, and other conflicts throughout the world. You can even offer various starting periods.

I don't understand why Skaven are submitted to such scrutiny, Lizardmen have as many DLCs as they do, only more forgettable. And among the 22 Lords that were not added in an FLC, 3 were Skavens. Lizardmen are the only ones to have had 2 consecutive DLCs (PaW + HaB). Yes skaven were a favored race but not at the expense of the others, unlike what seems to be coming for Cathay...

Prophet and Warlock: Skaven units were near perfect and the theme of this pack perfectly mirrored its LL. The mechanics were revolutionary compared to anything which came before. Meanwhile -ahem- *TEHENHAUIN* had neat though boring mechanics, three units which shared animations (and most of their visuals), only three units related to the LL. IIn addition to this the skaven received a great free rework (undercities), while the geomantic web hasnt been touched. Shadow and Blade: Skaven mechanics were busted and incredibly engaging, units were great for the most part (mostly carried by mortars), while Malus received... a mechanic so bad there were mods published to remove it. Though the medusa is by far my favorite druchii SEM. Otherwise the units added to them were forgettable. Dark Elves never had a complex or interesting DLC mechanic-wise. Moth and Hangry: The flesh lab once again revolutionized what was possible with faction mechancis. It is to date the most complex faction mechanic in the game. Units too, were perfect for the LL. And those ratwolves are cute. Meanwhile the elves received... a rather boring forge, with equally boring units aside from the bladesingers and stagknights. Though CA didnt have much to work with in regard to WE at that point. Yes, WE had a free rework which i am willing to consider in this. Skaven simply steal the show. Both mechanically and in regards to unit quality and complexity. All factions included in their pack were maybe 1/3 as good from a quality perspective as them. Its not even about strength (which the Skaven clearly dunked on), but fun and interactivity. Non-Skaven mechanics were boring as all hell. Though the same can be said of non-Prophet-and-Warlock lizard DLC. Although these always included a major free rework for the other factions. In a way, the other factions always left these DLC in a better shape than the lizards did thanks to said free reworks.

I can’t begin to explain how much of a shit I don’t give about Cathay, yet it keeps getting focus lately. I must be a masssive minority I guess.

You're not...its CA and SEGA as usual not being able to read a room, they almost certainly are going to blame the fans for the DLCs lack of success and probably throw out accusations of racism on top of that because they didn't get their way, its not the Chinese themed faction thats the problem...its that the Chinese themed faction is bland and uninteresting and had been rushed out the door with none of the flavor the previous factions had. Shame....ToD had me fooled they had finally found their footing.

The first DLC sounds like a total failure to me. There are plenty of missing characters/factions that can get implemented. I don't think players are interested in "custom" new characters. Also it doesn't really make sense: if the leaks are true that would mean that in 5 DLC's we would get 4 LL's for Cathay (I'm counting since Shadows of Change). And usually CA make pretty long breaks between releasing new content for the same faction which makes it even more unbelivable.

Agreed. Its too much for what little content is left for WH3, if those leaks are to be believed. If the next dlc is real, and is a failure, pretty sure the Monkey King dlc gets shafted sooner than they dropped Slaanesh and Khorne like hot potato. And if not, oh well... Ive been saying for a while (since Chorfs basically) the game is 'complete enough' with mods. DoW and Nagash coming is nice, but they already exist as rather standout mods. Its just annoying indeed to give up potential new content for existing races who need it, for fattening up just Cathay.

Cathay is one of my favorite factions, but if these leaks turn out to be true, holy shit we do not need *that much* Cathay I’d want some of the older guys like Vamp Counts and Norsca to get some love too, and I usually don’t even play them lol

to me, all this talk about monkey king and tiger men, just sounds like Ind , not Cathay. Maybe it means it won't be a seperate 'race' in the start screen just yet, but for now these factions will be found under Cathay in the start screen. And once monkey king is realsed in that third DLC, it'll all be transfered to it's own Ind races screen.

@@Nikolas5842 The lore about Ind literally talks about a tribe of tiger headed beastmen. Monkey kings islands are also Ind. Seems pretty obvious to me that the next DLC is laying the groundworks for Ind. A "mercenary lord tigerman...named bashiva. the link to Ind is pretty obvious I woudl say.

Sounds like the cathay lords are probably going to be a bit like Drycha.

This seems like they are stretching out the monkey kingdom DLC with what was already completed for the cancelled 3rd DLC. Throw in a possible old asset dogs of war and it speaks volume to what’s going on behind the scenes.

god suits are so dumb, they had 4 Chaos dlcs planned overprized the first one because they effed hyenas and dropped the concept as a whole. It could have brought them loads of cash if properly prized but hey

A lot of it sounds like placeholder or file names, like the Wukong stuff is very on the nose which is something they usually try to avoid

no extra khorne lords? all the other chaos factions got dlc lords but khorne doesnt??

They are. The official roadmap hasnt changed. Slaanesh will be part of the next DLC while Khorne will feature in the DLC after that. You can expect content of the same quantity as Blue and Green have received these last two DLC.

With all this upcoming Cathay content, does that mean the map changes in 6.0 will make Cathay bigger?

We have several factions that have not seen a single piece of DLC in two years, meanwhile Cathay receives 2 out of 3 DLC packs over the next year or two.... GREAT!
