Wargaming: Moldova vs Transnistria

Moldova, flanked by the complex dynamics of Eastern Europe, currently stands at a critical juncture in its geopolitical fate, as the simmering conflict in Transnistria, exasperated by the recent upheavals in Ukraine, has crafted a unique tableau of challenges and opportunities for both sides. Moldova's conventional forces and Transnistria's Russian-backed units each face unique pressures and advantages in this evolving context and both Moldova and Transnistria are being nudged into recalibrating their strategies or risk being swept into the storm of wider regional strife. Will Moldova's military reforms lend them a crucial edge, will the Transnistria conflict ignite into a full-blown confrontation, and how does the broadening Eastern European turmoil shape this potential flashpoint? To answer that we turn to our panel of experts:
On the panel this week:
- James Ker-Lindsay (Uni of Kent)
- Dan Darling (Forecast International)
- Stephen Blank (FPRI)

Thanks so much for the kind invitation to take part. It is an interesting situation that isn't getting much international attention. But we should certainly be keeping an eye on it.

We are talking about armed forces battling but in reality it would be full on populations fighting - citizens. It would be messy. So neither side wants this.

A few months ago I've visited Transnistria and altough I don't speak russian so I couldn't really talk to locals, I went with a russian speaking friend and he said that people there are basicly peaceful and don't want to reignite the 90s war but they sure don't want to get back into Moldova

So called "Ukraine" should first find someone to help it understand that they are being used by the Anglo-Saxon commonwealth against their own people. It is obvious that the aim is general reduction of the Russian population. Be well!

Ukraine has enough problems. Transnistria should go the way of Switzerland. Set up banks and let all the criminals know their money is safe there. You can be surrounded by the EU and function just fine and even prosper.

i am british and i moved here 18 months ago, i am not pro or anti either side, you have a good many of you facts wrong, not always by much but it is sad to see you are not reseraching pridnestrovia fully. the troops stationed here arent the issue, the population would take up arms and now you have a northern ireland all over again but worse.

Transnistria always was part of Moldova , and then this part decided to move away ( im not native speaker , sorry ) . And this is forbidden in any country when some one want to crush your country's structure without permission of president and parlament . And russia said in 1995 maybe , that they will withdraw their army from part of our country ( Transnistria ) . THAT'S why russian army and transnistria's government is problem and threat of Moldova .

Where does EU money come from to give EU countries extra money to become a member of NATO or EU ??? Maybe US giving hand outs to fight US wars. 😅 😂 . EU economy is being drained by the US to become dependent on US or get their arms twisted by US 😅 😂 . Thanks again for your information

Regarding the Eastern European countries you could never understand the way we perceive ourselves and the surrounding universum. Be well!

Wow, there's a lot of pro-Russia people in Moldova... If only there was some place they could go... You, know, like, if there was a gigantic-but-mostly-empty country somewhere in the world... bonus points in this gigantic-but-mostly-empty country spoke the same language and followed the same cultural customs as them... Wouldn’t it be cool if there was a gigantic-but-mostly-empty country out there somewhere, where people who spoke Russian and identified as culturally Russian could go and live? Indeed...

(Before watching the video...) There's not much I'd like to see more than the Moldovans run those Ruzzia fluffers out of Transnistria, but I know it's not going to happen, at least not while the Ukrainians are still fighting the Ruzzians on their own territory, and here's why. If Moldova attacks, some Ruzzians/Transnistrians will die defending in place, but most won't. A few will surrender, but most will run. And if you're in Transnistria, and you're being attacked from Moldova, what's the only direction you can run? That's right, east. Into southwestern Ukraine. A place where Ukraine does NOT station many troops. So if Moldova attacks Transnistria, that unleashes up to 15,000 Ruzzian and allied troops into Ukraine's backfield. Need I say more? So, yes. As much as we would all like to see Ruzzia's little pal Transnistria wiped off the map, that would be a terrible outcome for Ukraine. However, I would be willing to bet that Ukraine and Moldova have some plan to get rid of Transnistria worked out, but I'm sure it doesn't go into effect until the Ruzzians are out of Ukraine.
