Ward Hall on Exile on Main Street

Legendary 'King of the Sideshows' Ward Hall tells of how his picture came to be on the cover of the Rolling Stones legendary double record 'Exile on Main Street' released in 1972. This is an outtake from 'Traveling Sideshow: Shocked and Amazed' a TV documentary created and produced for The Travel Channel in 2003 by myself and Adam Eisenberg. The documentary was promptly shelved and never aired until sometime later, on that short lived digital channel collaboration between Discovery Networks and The New York Times. It was a complicated mess, but that's showbiz. And at least we got it produced; you can see the whole program here • Traveling Sideshow: Sh...
And I have plans to post all the outtakes online on a dedicated channel within the year. Stay tuned.
In the meantime, Ward Hall's 'World of Wonders' is still on the road at a state fair near you, James Taylor's Shocked and Amazed journal is still available, and The Rolling Stones are currently on tour.
As a side note, Robert Frank, who has photo credit for the album cover, refused to give me any details when I cornered him at a gallery opening in DC. Instead, he told me to 'make it up.' I'm not kidding. But he apparently took the photo--credited as 'Tattoo Parlor' in his photo series 'The Americans' - at Huberts Freak Museum and Flea Circus on 42nd Street in NYC.

Hi from China, Jeff! this is Eric Stockhausen's sister in law Mary Beth. It's great to see another one of your terrific human interest stories--this man is so sweet describing his old sideshow colleagues "this is Congo, not the first Congo, the other Congo..the mother and daughter midgets, the half-man, the armless lady"
