My experience with the people working at Big 4 firms, myself included, are that you are largely surrounded by shallow, unhappy, toxic, competitive people. I’ve worked for two of them and I’m now leaving for a healthier work environment. It’s good to get a taste of this environment when you’re young for, say, 2-3 years. But for the sake of your fulfillment in life and your relationships and your own peace of mind, get out and never return. They’re very unhealthy places and you’ll see this type of feedback on many sites, like Glassdoor and the like.

Currently struggling as a senior at a big four and this is so insightful (two engagements in the span of 6 months with no previous exposure to subject matter). I see the areas I can I improve from establishing deadlines yourself when there isn’t one given and trying to think two steps ahead. Still learning, appreciate this so much

Ok, this hits close to home. Especially part regarding the Marathon approach. Working at PwC my 4th year right now and burning out at least once a year. I have had hard time saying no to projects, because of FOMO. I'm working well so my managers want me to be involved in almost every our project. So it went 40 hours to 50, then 60 and when multiple projects had overlapping deadlines, it eventually went to 100 hours per week. But I'm getting better at saying no, just selecting only those interesting and try to get more balance.

I think this applies to every job. Great video to reference!

Another thing is take organized notes so that you don’t repeat mistakes

Sometimes when associates ask questions after working through the problem and documenting the thought process, the seniors and managers say that associates didn’t try to problem solve in the performance reviews. How do you tell from someone who actually looked deep into it rather than wasted time or gave up too easy? In addition, as an associate, do they have to work within the budgeted time? Is it expected that associates become more efficient after the first month of learning?

How do you get assigned more work? I have the mindset that learning has monetary value so while in terms of hourly rates putting in more hours means I am underpaid, I want to put in those extra hours as it accelerates my learning. I am also going in to audit but tech side. What would you say is the right way to ask for more questions and the right way to get assigned or choose projects to help you learn more? I mean just doing the same tasks for more hours isn't going to develop your skillsets much - so how do I ask non-detrimentally and in a professionally beneficial way to be taught the next steps when perhaps they have only taught associates up to stage x ?

This video is amazing, I can see myself as someone who needs help as regarding working with senior associates. How do you work with senior associate who wants you to figure everything out, have high expectations and have little or no time to talk things through with you.

If you follow the tips in the video you'll be fine! Work with your other associates/wider teams, and make sure you book time in the diary to go through questions.

the big question is why we have such a hard time asking questions in situations like the ones you describe. The video is really excellent, I really enjoyed it

Great question Jason - it's hard to do! You really have to set boundaries with your personal life and find activities/hobbies which you enjoy to fill your time. Learning to say 'no' is key as well. working at a big 4 seems overrated to me. I think since im in tech and business i try to transition to something like engineering since that is basically 6 figure at least
