Want to make a difference? Don't Work for a Charity. | William MacAskill | TEDxCambridgeUniversity

William MacAskill makes a clever plea to those young graduates who want to improve the lives of others: Want to change the world for the better? Here's the case for working in finance, rather than for a charity.
William MacAskill is a Research Fellow in Moral Philosophy at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He’s the cofounder of non-profits Giving What We Can, which advocates for people to pledge 10% of their income to the most cost-effective charities, and 80,000 Hours, which provides advice and coaching on how to choose a career with the biggest social impact. Between them these organisations have raised over $10 million for charity, with a further $370 million pledged. He is the author of Doing Good Better, to be published August 2015 with Penguin Random House (Gotham imprint) in the US and Guardian Faber in the UK. This book presents a philosophy he calls ‘effective altruism’, explaining how to do the most good though where you give, what you buy, where you volunteer and what career you pursue.

He has a lot of good points, however going into finance only for the sake of earning money to donate does not resonate with my values. He mentions trading as an example, which I believe is pointless in itself a lot of times, it goes about getting a bigger chunk of the pie instead of expanding it. It is true that a lot of money lies in Wall Street and generally in the business of trade, however it is not a practice that is desirable for society to maintain in my opinion. Instead of having a pointless job, earning money and donating it, we could create jobs and insure proper salaries to those working in sweatshops and agriculture for example.

in a way trading does do that, value is created with each transaction thereby making a bigger pie. people in sweatshop countries are toiling away in terrible conditions now, but that wont last. every successful and developed country today started on its path towards development with sweatshops, in other words if you ever want those countries to become developed they need to go through this sweatshop phase as humanity has not discovered another way to do it yet

the issue with this earn to give crap is that you don't properly account for the profound negative impact high earning careers (such as high frequency trading etc) can have. Trading generally works to increase income inequality and automated high frequency trading destabilises markets, putting many of the poorest's jobs at risk; donation can alleviate these problems but it won't outweigh them

I know this is an old comment, but similar criticisms continue to pop up, so I think it's worth responding to. Profits in the finance industry come from a variety of sources, depending on the kind of business, including management fees, commissions, and capital gains, among others. Not all of it is a zero-sum game. Companies that focus on value investing, in particular (as opposed to growth investing and especially day-trading) do a great deal of public good.

I needed to hear this. Last night I had the idea to start a charity to provide education centres and a website around the globe to educate the everyday person on government politics & business. After I had the idea I started hyperventilating and I haven't done that since I was a little kid with asthma. It was insane the craziest high of life I've ever experienced! It lasted well over an hour and I was shaking violently all over. In my haste I posted on facebook about it and therefore put social pressure on myself. I'm only 22 with no idea how to run anything let alone a potentially worldwide organization. And now I'm so tired from the stress of thinking about this for the past 24 hours I have the craziest head splitting migraine I've ever had in my life and I never ever even get migraines. I'm freaking out inside but am just too tired to freak out outside.

Most people who make a positive change doesnt do it by wanting to make a change. they follow their own life and somewhere on the way they are blessed with having possibilities of making a change. And people who hurry to change the world often makes things worse or end up wasting their life / see the history of all the failed idealists. Follow your own life and what you want to be and you will have plenty of possibilities to make changes- with your familiy, friends and the world. Dont hurry so much- be wise instead. So you dont do mistakes and then you will be able to know how to make the world better.

The skills you develop in the non-profit world aren't as good as the skills you would develop in the for-profit world?? GIVE ME A BREAK. Skills development in the non-profit sector is extremely useful and constructive. Yes, it depends on the respective size of the non-profit, but a struggling for-profit company can't necessary pay for a lot of training either. Let's not conflate charity work with non-profits in general.

Agreed. I mean, if what you want to do is work with people whose lives are in a wreck to support them in recovery, the only way to get good training is from an agency that is doing that (or some other kind of direct experience). You might get more "top of the line" training from some for-profit company in another sector, but that's not going to help the person who is trying to build themself into a skilled social service provider. His theory is neat on paper, but he didn't outline how the skillset in entrepreneurship is transferable to nonprofit management or some kind of service provision. Sure, making a scientific or technological advancement is great. Almost anything can be done in some kind of ethical way or with an ethical view in mind. You can apply hard skills utilizing the kind of soft skills and clinical experience that comes from working with populations that need support, but those skills don't just materialize because you have a noble aim. We need more people with direct experience working in nonprofits to take that experience, combine it with hard skills and technical knowledge, and implement new solutions... and we'll need people who work exclusively in providing those services to implement them as well!

Your argument depends on everyone following his advice. If he actually wielded such sway, i'm sure he would make a different argument. However, if you look at the world from a standpoint of "people tomorrow will be doing more or less the same as what they were doing today", the question becomes "given how people act, how can i maximise my impact" - which is what he is answering.

Does he think that he can just give his money and it will magically be used effectively to make a positive impact? There are humans dedicating their lives and sacrificing their time and effort and families and vacations and whatever else to make sure that his 50% is used correctly. If I were him I would want to be sure that those people are trustworthy and educated, not just whoever walked in off the street. Also, corporate training is a joke. I know this is an old comment, but your criticism is reflective of others that MacAskill and the EA movement continue to receive, so I think it's worth addressing. His advice to earn-to-give isn't universal; it depends on analyzing our specific set of circumstances at the margin. In other words, because charity organizations are currently facing a greater shortage of money than time, people should aim to donate more money rather than more time--especially those who are good at producing money--up until the direction of the imbalance changes.

Charities are already changing the world, and have been for many decades. Poverty is on the decline, partially as the result of charitable donation. Given that there are high-paying jobs out there *which are going to be filled*, wouldn't it be better that these roles are filled by people who are willing to donate some of their income to help others, in proven, measurable ways, than by people who just want to spend it on themselves? This doesn't mean that charitable donation is the *only* way in which the world can be improved, obviously it's important who we elect into office and so on, but it can definitely be *part* of the way in which the world can become a better place. You could be part of this change, if you wanted - just find a charity that does real, measurable good in the world (there are plenty out there), get a high-paying job which would otherwise be filled be a more selfish person, and choose to donate some of your expendable income to the charity of your choice.

I'm not impressed by this kid who lacks the life experience to back up any of his theories. He failed to address the fact that between a meaningless paycheck and charity organizations there is social business. Keep this Good Will Hunting Wanna Be in academia where he can spew baseless ideas to people ignorant enough to believe them. Leave the high impact stuff for the big kids...

Life experience plays no role in supporting or debunking theories of effective altruism. It just doesn't. What plays a role is knowledge of impact and quantifiable suffering/happiness. So, just no.
