Want To Be An Airline Pilot? 10 Jobs To Build Flight Time

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Filmed in partnership with Coradine Aviation - LogTen Pro, who made this production possible. If you want to become an airline pilot, you'll need anywhere from 1,000 to 1,500 flight hours in the USA. For many new pilots, getting that experience is a huge challenge. There are 10 common ways to do it... I worked, shadowed, and researched each one in this video. I hope it makes finding the right track for you just a little easier!
When I was building flight time towards my ATP certificate, I used an electronic logbook called LogTen Pro. Tracking my progress towards meeting the numerous ATP requirements was incredibly easy with the software, and it synced to my iPhone, iPad, and Mac. I'm still using it today to log all of my flights as an airline pilot. I partnered with Coradine Aviation so that you can try it out yourself.
Free 3-Month LogTen Pro Trial (New Subscribers) : coradine.com/swayne/
This is an electronic logbook I've used since I was a brand new student pilot. I love the product and have always recommended it to pilots I work with. Just so you know, if you sign up and purchase a subscription through Coradine Aviation, I'll get a small commission. That helps me make more videos and I'm grateful for your support! Plus, you can get a discount of 12% for iOS or 23% for the iOS/Mac bundle. If you're already an existing subscriber, contact the Coradine Aviation support team who will check and make sure that you're getting the best rate possible.

Hi, I wanted to ask you about color blindness. I took the plate test at my eye doctor just to see if I could pass. I got 12 out of 15 wrong. I know the Operational Field Test is an option, but if I fail I can't retake it. Do you know another alternative route I could take?

Interestingly - I posed the question to my PPL CFI as to the route he would have preferred to gain his hours. He was honest with me and stated teaching was not his preferred method. But everyone is different and if you like to teach then going through the CFI route may be great for you. As for myself, I'm a "mission" driven type of individual, so for me it might be a commercial pilot job until I reach that number.

After leaving the Navy, I was a "freight dog" for a little over a year. I built a LOT of night and IMC flying time. Ran all over the midwest, in all conditions and because I had no cattle to haul...could be a little more liberal with the control inputs and power settings!lol! Basically "free" time. After that I did ferry flights and really enjoyed that as well. Moved to GD/Gulfstream and flew biz as well before moving to big iron. Now I'm retired and if I were to go do it all over again, would have done it again in a heartbeat.

Namrud Fessehaye you don’t have to start at 17. You have to be 17 before you can get your PPL, which usually takes around 40-50 hrs. Also, it completely depends on how you go about your flight training. Joining a club is probably the cheapest option to get started.

I dont know guys, at my flight school, we are barely having any activity. Former CFI's working for big jet companies are coming back so they can have some sort of income. It's bad, I hope I'm wrong, but so far the only pilots that I know that have a job are Cargo and private part 91. I'm grateful that I still have a job as a CFI, but things are not good and I doubt the recovering process will fast. I was a pilot on 2006 and the crisis came, this resembles a lot. It will recover, and It will be quicker. Just make a good analysis before you take the jump, its a lot of money and that will only take you to around 250 hours, from then, like Martin said, its another 1200 ish you gotta put on your belt JUST for you to enter on the race.

I think right now it could still go both ways where there’s hope it won’t be that bad. But if the airlines really start to furlough early fall then I would forget about commercial flying for a while. If there’s furloughs it’s automatic few years of waiting for movement in the industry. I guess if I was starting right now I would just get the private and maybe share a plane and just wait it out until there really is hope before spending all that money for the ratings only to not be flying. I wasn’t a cfi so not sure how much time they get in a recession, I’m assuming not much.

  • @J.Halllll

The interesting thing about this economic crash is that it didn't happen as part of the natural economic cycle, so there's a good chance it could bounce back since this was an unnatural shock. On the other hand a recession or downturn was forecasted for some time in 2020 as far back as five years ago, so the two things sort of got mashed together. AND if there's a 2nd and 3rd wave, which is extremely likely based on how people in this country are reacting, we could be in for some serious serious trouble.

Pretty informative video especially for people new to aviation. I got all of my flight experience banner towing. In my opinion it’s definitely one of the more difficult routes but also the most rewarding. I’ve known quite a few airline pilots who built up all of their time in more traditional ways such as instructing. Most of them go on to become safe and successful airline pilot but there’s always a handful that slip through the cracks and never become truly skilled pilots. I cannot say the same of pilots who cut their teeth towing banners. I guess something about cruising around at 500ft on the edge of a stall makes you a good pilot.

'best of luck kid. Nice vids! After 20 years spent at your parent airline, I'm still not safe from the chopping block. Young pilots take heed: This career is not for the faint hearted. Externalities happen quite regularly, creating turmoil. Most likely you will experience many or all of the following: Furlough, bankruptcy, merger and seniority integration, stagnation, and long term or short term disability (airline pilots must maintain a 1st class medical, it is surprising how easy it is to lose it temporarily or even permanently). Being an airline pilot can be very rewarding, but you better realise that it's never as good as it seems, and never as bad as it seems. One must have a resilient, never give up, attitude and be able to take hits to the chin like a champion boxer. My best wishes to all those junior , and not so junior, pilots going forward.
