The part about keeping track is so true; the first few times I've run games, trying to juggle everything between the general planned trajectory of how you think the game should go, what the players are doing _and_ what your creature stat blocks are at the same time... really had me running around in circles and wondering if the players really enjoyed my sessions that were really chaotic behind the scenes. Turns out though, as echoed in this video, all I needed was to stop worrying about having to keep track of everything perfectly, as long as everyone at the table was having fun. Great stuff!

I’ll tell new DM’s the same thing I tell my music students (especially my adult learners): The first step to being good at something is not being good at it. When you start something new, we want to be instantly good at it (adults suffer from this the most because it might have been a while since they weren’t a expert in their activity) but learning is basically making mistakes and saying “here’s how not to do that again.” As long as you try to make your next session the best session you’ve ran, you WILL improve.
