Electric motorcycles are fast, powerful, and great fun. They're also pretty expensive, with prices for high-end models edging into (or past) low-end budget electric car territory.
As a consequence, many people who want to get onto two wheels look at electric mopeds instead.
They're a lot cheaper, and can be great commuter vehicles. But with so many different options in the market today, here's what you need to know before you make that purchase decision -- because not all low-cost scooters are created equally.

    It’s funny how the definition of “moped” has morphed...it used to represent a vehicle that gets its power from a combination of “Motor” and “pedaling”...hence “Mo-ped”. “Pedals” and a “Motor” were necessary components.

    The peddling was to start the engine. The trouble with the term "electric scooter" is that it's now used to mean small step scooters. All very confusing.

    You could also pedal the original mopeds like a bicycle or assist the engine ie pedal assist. The law at the time required that anything with a kick or electric start be counted as motorcycle whereas started by the motion of the pedals a moped. Similar to how electric bicycles aren't allowed accelerators and are pedal assist only

    These are great to build yourself. I bought the electric equavelant of a 50cc scooter, with 2KW electric motor but with broken lead agm batteries. There are many around, all cheap chinese bikes. So I bought batteries from a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and put them in the scooterz together with a configurable battery management system and a configurable charger. This works great, I have at least 40km of range when driving fast (50kph) and more when slower. I can also add more batteries, and buy a different motor controller, to go to a higher voltage and so more power and speed. Here in Netherlands, outside of the cities you drive them on good long bicycle paths and that works quite well. In the cities you have to go on ths streets with the cars, which feels less safe.

    Good points! Thank you for this. As a biker and a car driver, I see both sides and agree 100% that an underpowered vehicle, two or four wheel, is dangerous particularly if it looks like it should have sufficient power to maneuver, climb hills, keep up with traffic. Brakes are just as important as engine and are often a weak point on a cheaper bike or scooter. You need to be able to stop in a hurry.

    I've ridden a couple here in the UK equivalent to a 50 and 125cc. I would want one that can do 40-60mph which feels safer when you can keep up with traffic but find there are limited options at reasonable prices here. It's also a pain you have to take a CBT test every 2 years just ride on one of these unless you want to spend loads on a getting a full license, yet as an older car driver can ride a 50cc equivalent with no test or restrictions?

    i have some good friends in Cnina, and in the city that I visit regularly most of the traffic is electric scooters, and only electric ones. The city guvernor, whom I have met a few times, banned gas powered scooters inside city limits several years ago. Speed is only about 30 km/h so nearly no one has anything on when it comes to gear. Flipflops is the common sight when it comes to footware and helmets are very few and far between. It is quite nervewrecking to drive after dark across town for a barbeque, and drive back some hours later, Still, we had a great time and made some very good memories.

    I have a e-moped im in the middle of getting new batterys for it i chose this as i live in a city and makes the most sense to me to run to the local store etc instead of starting up my 4 cyl 1100 motorcycle just to run to the corner store

    Where I live there is no requirement for helmets license or insurance, for electric motorcycles. So the people that tend to drive them are young with no experience. The information that you provided was very good and useful, thanks.

    In California, most of the electric low-power electrics don't qualify as mopeds - and mopeds require the same licensing as their bigger cousins. On the plus side, though, we have legal 'lane-splitting' which means motorcyclists don't always have to stop for stopped traffic! I bought my 2014 Zero S for $6000, but it also came with saddlebags, spare tank plastics and belts (I've now sold some of those, about $100 of the $1000 of extras) and a motorcycle jacket. The Zero is really well-behaved for learners since you can turn the top speed and torque down in 'Eco' or 'Custom' modes. It's been very fun! See you on Discord.

    What you mean bij moped is actually a scooter,me and my wife have been driving them for last 10years,all electric , and they do 40mph and heve a range of 50-60 miles.We have never had any serious issues and enjoy them no end, btw we live in the netherlands

    As always great points well presented, thank you. However you kicked in one of my pet peeves, the somewhat inappropriate naming of 2 wheelers. Moped = motor plus pedals, which also include Ebikes, my fave. No pedals and it's a scooter which can be large, small or kick. I realise this is getting muddied by various regulators and makers but you're an influencer too. Maybe they need educating or maybe it doesn't matter but hey, it's one of my pets.

    Mopeds are not bicycles in the US. So they don't have to have pedals. Class 2 bicycles don't have pedals, either!

    @@CrissaKentavr As I said I realise this is getting muddied by various regulators and makers, add to that bureaucrats, but that doesn't make it right. The term moped was coined a long time ago to denote motor plus pedals. I've no idea what a class 2 bicycle is but, since bicycle simply means 2 wheels, that's not a problem.

    'moped' does not include ebikes in any country I'm aware of (except maybe the Netherlands where mopeds are allowed in bike lanes), although you can buy ebikes that are styled to look like mopeds. In UK English mopeds (a legal class of machine 50cc or

    Speaking of which EV to buy, the new electric Mini has just been advertised as coming in March, 2020 on UK telly tonight during peak viewing hours - 4/11/2019. Despite March being 5 months away the mere fact that it's being advertised on TV @ all is quite a departure from business as usual here. Slowly more & more EV's are being advertised on TV in the UK & in peak viewing hours.

    Great vid. I don't think a Scooter/Moped is for me. I'm a one vehicle guy and I need something for the winter. Now for getting a bike, I really like all the stuff I've been seeing about Rad. Might get one of those after I've settled down.

    I've got an e-moped and it was bloody freezing in winter until I bought a 'skirt' and bar-mitts. Those make a huge difference.

    @@bigbadjohn10 It depends on your local regulations. In Ontario if you take the pedals off it is not an electrically assisted bike anymore and you need a license and insurance and all the requirements of a motor bike. I think there is a 250 watt power limit too.

    John Ross .... During a test case a couple of years back in St. Catharines Ontario, a judge ruled in favour of a man charged with riding without pedals .... stating that the vehicle was indeed still an e-bike without the pedals in place. I believe the analogy the judge used was "a sailboat with sails down using it's motor is still considered a sailboat". The police have since (for the most part), stopped trying to use that charge, at least police in the know. The maximum sized motor for an e-bike in Canada is 500 watts, although any voltage is allowed as long as it is governed to go no more than 32 klm/hr (approximately 20 mph). Cheers.

    Not in the UK. It's a moped if it's over the e-bike 250W rating, but under 2kW(?) or 50cc and limited to 50kmh/30mph. Pedals don't come into it (since approx the end of the 1970s when the rules changed).

    Technically, yes. No pedal power and mechanically it is not truly a moped. Nonetheless, many places use the term "moped" to classify an engine power rating. 49cc and below are considered mopeds in most places.

    My girlfriend and I bought a used 800W scooter/moped 6 months ago. It costed us around $400. It struggles to carry both of us in a slope, but we live in a rather flat city so that doesn't really matter, and the total cost of ownership is impressively low. Only a bike would be cheaper. EDIT: I wrote this before she said that 3kW was the utmost minimum acceptable. LOL. I think over 90% of the electric scooters sold here are lower than that :S

    Obviously, it also depends on the local culture and habits. In the US, scooters are driven in busy regular car traffic on busy regular car streets, often on roads with speed limits of 35 MPH or higher - even when the scooter itself may top out at 35 MPH. So having the power to quickly accelerate up to the speed of traffic when merging are necessities. But I know in some countries (and even some cities and areas in the US,) mopeds may be driven in lower-density areas far more commonly - where most traffic ISN'T large SUVs, or scooters may even have roads/paths without cars, or the speeds are just slower. An 800W may do well enough in one part of my city to get to and from downtown, but not my part.

    In the UK (and Europe) we have EAPCs (Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles). This is a Type Approval, which draws the line between bikes and mopeds. To classify as a EAPC, the bike must be at or below 250W, and have a max speed of 15.5mph/25km/h. There is also a weight limit depending on the number of seats. If it's a EAPC then you don't need a driving licence, licence plate, road tax or insurance, or an MOT, and you can ride one from the age of 14. Above this, and it will be classified as a moped, and you will need all of those things. What this means, is that the cost of owning anything with even a moderate amount of power is going to cost you. I have a EAPC and it cost me around £450, and cost practically nothing to run. If it was to be a multi-KW moped, firstly it would be well over £1000 (secondhand) to buy, plus the ongoing cost of MOTs and insurance. Most people who don't ride motor cycles wouldn't even consider a low powered electric moped (because it's so under powered compared to motorcycles), and anyone who drives cars won't spend that kind of money on something that isn't a car - the last car i bought was £650, and it's a 7 seater estate.

    @@AnonymousFreakYT We do have very slow traffic, and a lot of traffic jams, which is why the scooter is prefered. Plus, Bogota is structured very different to most american cities. Highways, for example, are few and far between.

    Always wear gear. I’m not a rider but have seen a rider checking the hole in his Kevlar jeans at a light stop. I think he was happy he could inspect the hole.

    because the denim outer may have a hole and therefore look trendy (or he may have just fallen off and made a hole!). BUT the KEVLAR lining will be intact and providing the abrasion resistance it was designed to.

    I wouldn't mind having one and I ride all kinds of bikes. it would be ideal for me, since I cannot put in a car charger where I live, (I rent) and since I'm newly single and my hardly ever used car is getting sold, I could ride it to the EV car sharing station, lol if we ever get one out here. My first "motorcycle" was one of those pedal to start mopeds, I seem it didn't have all that great of range either maybe 60 miles and I had to mix oil and gas to refuel it. I could see a E scooter in San Francisco, the electric motor can handle those hill and if it has regen getting some of it back going down the other side. I have not tried an EV in San Francisco so maybe a future topic. (I'm still learning to drive an EV myself, haven;t learned all the techniques and tricks quite yet) I recommend anyone on any size two wheeler to take a safety course. Side note I was talking to some of my hot rod friends about EV's I mentioned you don't have to worry about someone stealing your gas, but I'm sure someone is figuring out way to do that with EV's .

    There are many choices for over 50 km/h bikes other than the Zero/Energica. Fonzarelli, BMW, Revolt, Kymco, Johammer, Super Soco, KTM and Evoke to name just 8. There plenty more. It's misleading to make out that it's a Zero/Energica or an under 50 km/h bike. For extra irony points, the bike you put up at 5:47 to illustrate that sub 50 km/h bikes may look faster than that, has a top speed of 105 km/h... The Horwin CR6 Pro.

    My way of seeing this problem is not the bikes power or excellence of the greater what you have matters but the averness of the rider. Most of my bikes where absolutely underpowered though knowing it and taking the risk seriously made me safe always. So use your brain don't make excuses for the tech. I think not progressing in knowledge is more dangerous than not investing in the gear.

    No - Currently they only charge using standard 13A sockets that you have in the house

    Riding any scooter in my area will make you seasoning on top of a Pothole (We even have a dish at the local bar called the Detroit pothole mix, which is made of fried beer battered pork chunks topped with michigan chili). When the roads are full of Ram 1500's driving like fucking assholes at 80-90 mph, the smallest vehicle you will feel safe in is a Bolt EV. PS: A reckless pickup driver nearly smashed into me today, I'm glad that my car did not get damaged, and all I had to experience was a mild lower leg sprain from slamming on my brakes

    does that mean a TC max is a bad idea on a one mile stretch of a 50 mph road that you just know every body does 60 on and the other 4 miles are 30. Very good points that have been on my mind regarding this. However, got to give up biking soon, cant consider any ICE transport because I don't want to commit crimes against humanity with the emissions and public transport costs for a full year are a P**s take. I consider hybrids a waste of time and EV cars are just to expensive at present. Maybe taking a driving test every ten years could be a good answer too. All that extra revenue for struggling governments around the world might come in handy as their tax revenue reduces through technological transition. What do you reckon

    Skate devices are regulated very weirdly in comparison to other motorized vehicles. They're limited to 15mph assist in most of California, but several cities ban them completely!

    @@transportevolved I'm not entirely *A* TG *A* TT, because I can't be bothered with armored riding pants around town, but I've learned the hard way about never not wearing an armored jacket and gloves, and I always wear hiking boots anyway (not proper riding gear but close enough) [Edit: the helmet goes without saying, but I came back to say it anyway.] And when I'm leaving town I put those overpants on too. Again, learned the hard way with that. As the saying goes, experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted. I've had a few ... experiences. And you said it right: not *yet* ... fingers crossed that it'll be at a slow speed and with minimum damage.

    Why is an 800W moped 'dangerous' due to being underpowered, whilst e-bikes are OK? I agree that mopeds are something of a liability where the rest of the traffic is doing 40mph+ (dual carriageways, and fast, narrow country roads), but those aren't much fun on a bike or e-bike either. 800W is more than most e-bikes or normal riders can put out, although such machines are often relatively heavy so you will probably be doing 25-30kmh as opposed to up to 25 an an e-bike and 16-24 on a pushbike (unless you are fit and keen).

    Surely if governments want us to buy green they should maybe have grants towards costs, I have been a motorcyclist for over 30 years, want to get an electric bike, have a commute of 8 miles, nothing affordable comes close to being useable, so being green in the UK is very much a middle class experience...shame

    I agree, and all the options are cool, but very impractical as opposed to an excursion bike. We really need a proper economy bike out there, my 40mph moped has its limitations but the whole body is storage, idk why someone hasn't done that with a highway rated true motorcycle, it would be a game changer. Imagine carrying stuff without needed saddlebags and backpacks every time! :)

    I agree with some of what you said but I disagree with what your saying about people making judgements about the type of performance of the vehicle your riding based on how it looks. I'm not saying people don't do it but it just excusing bad driving. You should be looking at what is going on around you when your driving and what the other vehicles are doing right now. Not what you imagine they're capable of doing. If your performing an overtake of a slower bike then you should be doing it properly anyway. Or not tailgating them because they're slow or any other type of bad driving. Just give people space and show respect no matter what type of vehicle

    I think Moped is an amalgam of motor and pedal - a motor bike with pedals. I believe in California, for a bike to be legally considered a moped must have pedals and you must be able to pedal it.

    No. It's complicated. peopleforbikes.org/blog/new-e-bike-law-passes-in-california/ In California we have Class 0-3 of bicycles, Skate devices, Mopeds & Scooters, Three-wheeled motorcycles, and motorcycles. Class 2 bicycles are 750watts or less without pedals, limited to 20 mph! Class 3 bicycles are limited to 750 and 28 mph assist and don't require any license (but under-16 aren't allowed to use them). Mopeds are anything above that, but are limited to 30mph and don't only require a driver's license to rent - but if you intend to own them, you need an M2 or better to ride one. Three-wheeled can also be driven without an M license, but are otherwise regulated like motorcycles; and M1 lets you ride any of the above and the more powerful motorcycles, but you have to pass a skills test (which is the same as the one for the M2 test, so in practice only teens get M2 licenses).

    Around here, mopeds have to have pedals. No pedals, they are then scooters. eBikes with a throttle is a moped, not an ebike.

    They are still way too expensive. Modern 125cc Cub-style scooters are still very cheap to buy and their running expenses are very low. They can even do city highways. An equivalent powered e-scooter is triple price. They need to drop to at least double price to be competitive.

    1 elwctric KW is not equal to 1 ICE KW. The ratio is more like 1:3. Thats why a 4 KW scooter feels/drives like a 12KW 125cc scooter.

    Actually Mopeds are "Motor +Pedals", which signifies any 2 wheeler that has both and Scooters are the ones that are being referred to here as Mopeds. Because, the term scooter originally meant the one that Vespa came up with. But, with the rise of those standing things, which are called scooters in the US, the terminology has got cluttered.

    My electric moped has 1kw and that's more than enough. If you're going to ride on fast car roads, then yes, you'd want more... but why the hell would you want ride there anyway? It's dangerous. 1kw is more than enough for the bike lane.

    you are putting too much on the bike rider saying it's unsafe if low powered. no matter what a vehicle is ALL road users should be following the rules. and giving space to other users.

    A suggested topic for you to base a video on: Skoda; shok ra tek (spelled phonetically); Kinetic Energy Batteries Powering EV Chargers. I saw this in an Autoline Daily video, titled Mopar's Low Rider for SEMA; 5 minutes 50 seconds into the video. This is the kind of topic you are unquestionably a technical expert at researching and presenting. I'm a subscriber-fan-patron. This 2 wheeler safety presentation, not your thing. Vague and unsupported by data or video examples. "Wear the proper gear?" An 800 watt threshold/get yourself out of trouble? An average human on a bicycle can't generate 800 watts, but a human on a bicycle with developed skills and judgement can navigate New York City traffic. Was your point that one should practice before entering traffic? Generally, Transport Evolved attracts a higher intellect than this safety video would ever benefit. Love your channel. Looking forward.

    I think most people would be a danger to them selfs&others trying to convert to a scooter from say driving a car etc.only if they have experience of petrol scooters would be sensible.. a little snippet from a surgeon what do call motor bike riders?DONORS a sad fact 😷😷

    300+ range with room for storage on two wheels. Think of something like a Honda ST1200 I want a bike but I want a tourer. Not something that is powered by electric yet.

    You would probably be scratching your head a lot at the two wheel riders in Portland, or.. wearing tennis shoes, shorts, and a tshirt is quite common.. protection? They leave that up to tha lord! But yeah no they get pretty fucked up when things go sideways

    Most of them have a top speed of 20, 25 if you take the limiter off.

    Your thesis relies heavily on the assumption that people driving cars actually knows what to expect from people riding motorcycles, which in my experience is totally false. People are dumber than you give them credit for. lol.

    This is the point I was hoping to find in the comments. In Toronto people drive cars and SUVs into the sides of garbage trucks, storefronts, boulders, and telephone poles. Was the driver just misunderstanding how fast boulders can accelerate? :) No, the driver was paying no attention to the road, and this is why motorcyclists develop eyes on the backs of their helmets. :| Let's all be safer and kinder out there.

    @@TaiViinikka Having ridden all sorts of bikes over the years. The point I understood her making was, that if they crash in to "boulders, and telephone poles", it's only them that get hurt. But you are vulnerable on any kind of bike and it's almost impossible to guard yourself against other road users all the time.

    The people tearing by me at 50-60mph in a 30mph zone aren't 'responsible'. What people SHOULD do and what they ACTUALLY DO are two different things.
