WALTHAM ABBEY AND KING HAROLD'S TOMB | ESSEX

This is another English Heritage owned site that myself and Candice decided to visit one Sunday and it is free entry. I have been here before a long time ago on a day walk. Not only can you explore the vast grounds of the abbey and it's ruins, but it is supposedly the final resting place of the last Saxon King of England, the famous King Harold (killed by an arrow to the eye at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and succeeded by William the Conqueror). A must see and visit for any history buff!

Thanks Tom. I'm a Brit ex-pat in Canada originally from Chester. I am enamoured with this and older eras and with the tragedy of King Harold. I cannot be there but love to learn in any way that I can. Oh how I miss Britain's rich rich history. Cheers.

King Harold is buried in Bosham Church, Sussex. The church was built by his mother who petitioned for the return of King Harold's body for Christian burial even offering his weight in gold. Before King Williams death he relented and returned the body. In the 1950's during work on Bosham Church workmen discovered a lead lined stone coffin containing the body of a man minus a head, minus a leg, with part of another leg missing. ALL similar to the mutilation of King Harold's body at the Battle of Hastings. King William on becoming King then took the Godwinsons family estate.....AT BOSHAM! I believe King Harolds head is buried at Waltham Abbey, the Church and Abbey he built. As King William famously said, "Let King Harold be buried overlooking the shore he so vigorously defended". Bosham Church overlooks the harbour there. The Crown & Bishop of Chichester both decreed that the tomb in Bosham Church shall NEVER be disturbed ,or exhumed again. Why?

This is true as a child 58 years ago we to go to the abbey and pick apple's and pears , there is still a blood line Neil gladwin derived from Godwin is the bloodline of king harold Godwin 2nd , people do not realise how big the abbey was , the research for this came from Charles gladwin tracing his bloodline.
