WALKS IN DORSET at KIMMERIDGE BAY (including SWYRE HEAD & THE CLAVELL TOWER) [4K]

This is another video in my series “ Walks in Dorset” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I take a walk in and around Kimmeridge Bay- located on the Jurassic Coast about 5 miles South of Wareham & 7 miles West of Swanage.
After parking my car in a free car park - in a disused quarry just at the Northern end of Kimmeridge - I initially head East, uphill, along the ridge of Smedmore Hill. From there I enjoy super views over to the East (Corfe Castle) and the West (Portland Bill).
I make my way to Swyre Head which is the highest point on the Isle of Purbeck (for more super views) before making my way downhill to join up with the South West Coast Path (SWCP).
My route takes me West along the SWCP to Kimmeridge Bay and along the way I pass the Clavell Tower. Dropping down into the bay, I pass by the Fine Foundation Wild Seas Centre before getting on to the beach itself.
I take a small detour to the West to check out the oil well - the oldest working oil pump in the UK - before heading North along the Hardy Way to the pretty village of Kimmeridge where I explore the church of St Nicholas. My final destination is the Clavells Restaurant for some light refreshment.
The weather was perfect for my walk - a sunny, bright Spring day.

Hi Dave, John here again. Did the Kimmeridge walk today. The haar streaming over the escarpment was impressive but meant no views until we descended to the coastal path. Beautiful walk with my wife Sally and Tess our Springer Spaniel. Our last day in Dorset - I wish we had found your walks earlier in the week but we did manage two. Will be sure to look you up when we return. Thanks again for the great walks.

Swyre head is my favourite place in Dorset such stunning views and so peaceful. The house that's close to the parking field at kimmeridge was used for a few episodes of eastenders back in the early noughties along with matravers village. Kimmeridge was also a filming spot for Bryan Adams hit from Robin Hood, Everything I Do. You can see him singing near the pillbox

My favourite place in Dorset! We normally park in the street as it's free and you dont have to do the massive uphill part from the church to the car park at the endo f your walk. We sometimes do this in reverse, going down to the cliffs from Kimmeridge, which gives it a different perspective. Cant get away from the hills though! Happy walking to you and Logan!

Just stunning! What are sight hounds, please? An area I know slightly from walking the SWCP so brought back some lovely memories.

  • @DaveFord

"Sighthounds" are hounds that hunt (or should I say were originally bred to hunt) primarily by sight & speed rather than scent & endurance (as scent hounds do). There are quite a few "sighthound" breeds but the main ones are Greyhounds, Whippets, Afghan Hounds & Salukis.

@@DaveFord That is really interesting. I wondered if it was to do with 'sight' not 'site' when I put question so pondered on spelling! I am normally a bit scared of dogs but Logan is lovely! So obedient and well behaved it seems. I love his gait. My friend says I seem to have a special affinity for and to whippets as they don't make me anxious when they approach like other dogs.
