If you are on crutches for a leg injury, fracutre or surgery (or in a boot!) then watch this and take some tips on how to use those crutches correctly, as well as reduce any limp habit that's developing. I also address the limp problem if you are not using crutches but have a limp anyway from a stiff or sore ankle - and how to sort that out as quick as you can.

    Very helpful demonstration for walking with crutches,climbing upstairs with good leg first and close to the handrail,going downstairs with the weak leg first, then standing up with two legs together. Then slowing going downstairs holding rail and close to rail. Besides,the positions to hold up two crutches and steps to walk with long crutches were also performed very clearly and detailedly for the audiences who had these needs to mobilize their limbs.

    A little under five weeks post distal fibula fracture. In a boot and given the ok to put light weight bearing. Just finished walking 3 blocks down our neighborhood + back (albeit slow, mindfully and using tips from this video). Felt pretty good, walking with the boot and crutches felt more natural/smoother.

    Injured leg down, good leg up. Thanks a million this is make it easier for to learn how to go up and down on the stairs. I broke my femur 3 months ago and I had a titanium rod installed there. I can't thank you enough this is extremely helpful ❤

    I’m going through a tibia and fibula break day 11, two weeks on Sunday and I’m already walking without support, this video helped me remove limp to steps. I appreciate this so much. There’s hope guys. I had a rod put it which allows me with weight bearing, also intake nurofen and let it digest before walking. I also pray daily and appreciate the injury wasn’t worse to god ❤️

    Bro I got fibula break. It's been 5 weeks now. Their remove my cast on 4weeks now it's 5 weeks the doctor told me to try to walk on crutches. After 6 weeks he advise me to removed crutches and try to walk normally

    is it normal to have a lot of pain in your leg after a break is fully healed? I can’t put any weight on it because it hurts so much but my surgeon said it’s fully healed

    Going to try this tomorrow! Found this video useful- I had fractured tibia operation two months ago and am now partial weight bearing. I’ve got to the stage where I’m trying to use one crutch but used it on my good side ! So now I know that’s not the way to do it- I’ll give crutch a go on the same side as my injured leg and give a more extended step on my good leg as you suggest. Thanks a lot !

    Thanks! Consice and accurate tips! I'm four weeks out from intramedullary nail surgery from a broken tib and fib, and can tell that ankle mobility will be an issue. I've been watching rehab videos (in addition to actual physio appointments), and this is the first one I've seen that has really good descriptions of bad habit danger signs when you transition from crutches to load bearing.

    ​@@abdihakimmoge9257 Extension is almost normal, but I can only bend it about 90 degrees. It gets better, but it's going very slow. It's still a bit swollen so it feels "tight". Doing sitting and laying down leg lifts and bending exercises several times a day after advise from my physical therapist. Rests in an elevated position if it gets extra swollen after exercise or extended periods of walking or sitting.

    Yea same here. 1 month after tib n fib fracture, my question for you is how much pressure are you putting on your leg when walking with crutches? I’m putting regularly 30% and tried around 60% but to much pain

    ​@@ihabe7988 Hi! I'm currently (Dec 12, 2022) 9.5 weeks away from fracture and operation. Doctor's orders for me was 20-30kg (~30-40% body weight) allowed for 8 weeks, which I stuck to. I did ankle and knee mobility training recommended by my physical therapist, but it kind of stopped being effective with only partial body weight. Didn't feel that there was a lot of progress with my ankle from week 5-8. The ankle just "stopped" and I didn't feel any stretching sensation with the allowed weight. My knee was pretty much the same from week 3-5, but drastically improved after week 5 when most of the swelling went away. I'm about 10 degrees away from my normal knee mobility now. Pushing the last part is painful, but I'm not worried about it as I'm so close to normal function that it'll come back over time when I get back to normal activity level. After x-ray and checkup on wk 8 I was allowed to put full body weight on my leg and start training up to pain tolerance. As expected my ankle is limiting my mobility. My walking without crutches is close to the example at about 8:15 in the video, due to pain around my achilles and in my leg muscles when trying to load the front of the foot to push off with my toes. So I'm lacking both dorsiflexion and strength. Doing leg raises and box/step stands with dropped heels to train and stretch now, and they're quite painful, but slight improvements every other day. At least I can stand up in the shower and walk from kitchen to living room without crutches so I can bring my own food now. Still using crutches when outside of the house untill I am able to do complete normal steps without limping. Hope you'll have a speedy recovery, and don't skimp on the mobility training you're allowed to do!

    Thank you for this video. Very well explained and demonstrated. Most videos that I have seen- only talk, hardly any focus on demonstrating. This is so good. I am struggling with limping as i walk after my tibial surgery. Hope to practice this and get over the limp. Also i wasnt focusing in longer stride with good leg. I am using crutches. Thanks again.

    Just want to know when exactly one walks alternating feet on stairs after tibial nailing both going up and down without support. I am four months now post nailing after tibial communited fracture with fibula fracture. Struggling with going down the stairs. Any tips!!

    I really appreciate that point about the importance of not limping! I would not have been quite as motivated had I not known that it could cause other problems. Also, I felt it would have worked better if the screen was split so that we could watch you talk and see the foot action close up at the same time.

    Great video. I have a broken femur 6 months now and about a month ago able to put weight on it. My PT told me to have the crutch on the hood side not the injured side. Gonna try it your way now. Thanks

    It’s been 7 weeks since I was injured and had surgery I just got cleared to walk even though my ankle is not completely healed. My heel hurts a bit so I’m limping and walking exactly the way you demonstrated. I just want to walk already I keep practicing I’m hoping the limping will stop.

    In other tutorials that I have seen - and I have also read on Google - to support the injured leg with one crutch, the crutch goes on the opposite side to the injured leg; you then move the injured leg and crutch at the same time.

    Thank you so much for these tips and tricks! Broke both my tibia and fibula in the middle of February this year (didn’t need plaster after the surgery). After 4 weeks I was able to throw the crutches away and now after 6.5 weeks I’m walking almost as usual. Walked with the wrong foot first (with the crutches) until I saw this clip.     This is very helpful. I just got my cast removed and was trying to figure out how to gradually resume walking and weight bearing, despite my foot and lower leg still feeling painful as a result of stiffness.

    I did used crutches when I was 15 years old when I hurt my left knee. These were wooden ones. My knee did swell up in a bent condition that I can’t straighten it. I was so upset with my father for forcing me in going to school. I didn’t have surgery on it. It was hard going up and down the stairs at school. Even when I was home,too. I missed a week of school back then. When I was in my mid 30’s that I did the same thing towards my right knee. It took a little bit longer. I kept the right knee straight when I was walking. I was afraid of keeping my knee in a bent condition that I can’t walk at all. It was so hard to get down towards the floor. I learned on going up stairs with the good leg and bad leg going down. I still do it since my left knee is really bad. I tried to go up with one leg and the other leg. It is so harder for me and I just do step at a time. I’m a little bit slower in walking.

    I was in a car crash and my foot was obliterated, doctors said it was partially amputated when I got to the E.R. I fractured my fibula, tibia, calcaneus, talus, and a couple metatarsal bones. I am still wearing a external stabilizer and my ORIF surgery is scheduled in a couple of months. It scares me to wonder if I won't be able to walk right, I am really young and I do not want to limp for the rest of my life :(.

    This is frustratingly the exact opposite advice for walking with one crutch that I’ve been given. Perhaps it is because this is fixing a limp rather than the progression from NWB to FWB? I’ve been told to use opposite arm for crutch or cane to most closely mimic natural walking. So confused now!

    You use the crutch on the normal leg because that you get proper balance. I know because i injured my femur and putting the crutch on the injured side makes it impossible to move.

    I’m reading all these comments and I feel a little silly about my injury. I broke my toes 6 weeks ago after an industrial size Saran Wrap fell on it from on top my fridge. I have not used my foot at all. When I try to move my ankle and move my foot up and down it trembles, I’ve also tried using my heel to get up and it shoots pain up my leg. I have 2 more weeks with a boot, hoping to start lighting putting weight on my foot this week 🙏🏽

    Hi,I got a 5th metatarsal base fracture on rt. foot. Non weight bearing cast below knee for 6 weeks(1 week slab + 5 weeks POP Cast) Been going here and there with Walker with wrong technique (put my weight on the Walker and keeping the injured leg up in the air..maybe I was wrong..) Now got cast removed on 5th August. Didn't walk on it for a week or 2. Then tried to stand with no weight on it and still keeping weight on good leg. Then tried walking as such (very painful) But now I know I didn't put enough weight and weight shifting was happening to upeer rt. Limb and not to foot. Have very little strength in rt. Half of body. And weight transfer is tricky. Ankle is swollen still. ROM decreased. 1st Physiotherapist said you are not putting weight on it. I really not had a clue how to do it. Got another physiotherapist and she says almost same. I said I am not able to find strength to put weight then they say you are actually afraid of pain which is a mind block (I am but I don't know.thee should be another way) And they try wean me off Walker,gain balance, distribute weight equally,not get a limp all at once. And I still limp like you have shown. Can't put enough weight on injured leg and just limp forward with good leg except I use my hands too and my waist is not straight. And my leg strength is not felt by me. Even rt. Half of upper body seemd to be much less muscle active than left. Like foot,leg,thigh,buttock,waist,upper back.... Can you please reply. What can I do. Also my Physiotherapist denied trying crutches and air boot saying do like this only. Please reply. My thoughts - might be atrophy..

    Thank you so much for for the this it's encouraging... However I have had an antibacterial rod with a tibiotalar ankle fusion..I'm going into 3 months post opt.. I have alot of shin pain and using one crutch.. Dr wants me to bare as much as weight as I can tolerate .. But it's painful at times.. Your video showed me alot how to use my crutches thank you.. I want so bad to walk without a limp and normal.

    I'm struggling with this now fractured my calcaneum 6 months ago couldn't weight bear for nearly 4. Training hard to rebuild my calf and the tendons at the front of the ankle need strengthening. I can't walk without putting some weight on the crutch to compensate.

    This video was meant for me lol.I have such a bad limp. I’m going to try this at home since I don’t start PT for another week. After being in a cast then boot for a total of 7 weeks it’s really hard for me to trust my broken ankle. Im currently in a air cast and everything just seems like a freaking nightmare that is never ending.

    @@charlestv339 Hey buddy sorry to hear you are in the same boat as me. How's your recovery going? They told me 6 weeks till I could start physio but in the next appointment they put me forward for surgery which was three weeks ago. I've got titanium implants now with a tight rope in going through the ankle joint.. and a long road ahead. Good news is cast being removed this Friday and then I'll be in a walking boot! I hope you were able to avoid surgery.

    @@vivekthaker7970 yes bro. For me my orthopedic not require me to do surgery. It's was non-operated fibula fractured for me. But the now I'm doing excercises as per my physio therapy. I must do a single crutch opposite side of fractured leg. Ang ankle pumps excercises

    Hi there, This video was helpful. I've been on crutches lately because of a recent patellar dislocation. I was playing basketball, and after I went up for a layup, I landed hard on my leg and heard a loud pop, followed by intense pain. (It was the second time I had an injury to that knee while playing sports). Ever since that injury, which was over two weeks ago, I have not been able to straighten my leg completely. Is that normal? It feels stiff. I would appreciate some recommendations. Thank you.

    I got my cast off last week ive been given a boot its so cumbersome i can walk better without it will i do more damage tho if i dont use it? Ive had fibula and tibia weber c surgery i do need a knee replacement on the same leg maybe thats why i am struggling to use the boot

I am recovering from Tibial Plateau surgery and still having a hard time getting to the one crutch stage due to my weak quad/&some back pain (which I am working on). My physio is recommending the one crutch be on the good side and what you are showing seems to make more much more sense to me.

    @@msteariousmm7482 Yes, I underwent tibial plateau surgery & a full meniscal repair (I was 12 weeks no weight bearing). I am a year in and am on a cane - still working hard to get my glute/quad strength back (I can walk, but with quite a limp, so use the cane alternately). I have full bend and flexion and that just takes daily work doing the exercise from your PT. It's a real mental game trying to get back to your pre-surgery self, but keep working hard at your exercises & staying as positive as you can.

    That can't be right. The entire purpose of a crutch is to take some weight off your injured foot. Your uninjured foot does not need a crutch to help support it 😂

    ​@@paradise9151 actually that's tottaly right .. its not just about taking off some weight of the injured limb it depends on the site of the injury and what we need to do with the crutches.. fyi walking with crutches on the opposite side decrease JRF in the hip joint and the abductors force so it could decrease pain and stress in the injured limb

    @@ramezelia1092 I don't think you understand. So i am supposed to hold my crutch, with my right hand, when my left leg is broken???.... You are supposed to use your crutch on the leg that is BROKEN. Because the ENTIRE POINT of a crutch, is supposed to act like a leg to support your weight. And since your LEFT LEG is broken, you use the crutch ON YOUR LEFT SIDE. Why on gods green earth would you use a crutch for a non injured leg 🤣🤣🤣

    Sure. Initially you use two crutches and you do as the guy in the video says, but eventually you improve and start using just one crutch. You use that crutch, as you said, on the opposite side of the injured leg, and you move that single crutch forward at the same time you're moving your injured leg forward.

    Hi, Tim - I had a tibia and fibula fracture 3 mo. ago. I am trying to walk without crutches (don't think I am there yet) or just using one crutch. Your video is extremely helpful. Some physical therapists said I should put the crutch on the side opposite the injured leg. You say the crutch should be put on the same side as the injured leg. Which way is better?

    I'm transitioning to one crutch but my therapist told me to use the crutch on the opposite side of my injured side.. not on the same side as shown here.. I've also seen that advice elsewhere.. so which is it? one crutch on the injured side or opposite?

    When you need to take weight off the leg, you put the crutch on the opposite side. But at some point when you are supposed to start weight-bearing and putting load on the leg to strengthen the leg the crutch should be on the same side. This way you are transitioning and not increasing the load too much in one hit. I hope this makes sense.

    How long is it supposed to take to build up strength & how long until I can walk 10-15 mins comfortably? I am 6.5 weeks post-op deep laceration to gastroknemius and peroneal longus. Still on both crutches PWB trying to improve stride length and reduce limp. Specialist said not to see physio until 3 months!!

    What about limping after a hip replacement? One month ago, I had total hip replacement after 6 years of needing one. Using a cane then walker for 6 years. I couldn't have surgery till I lost enough weight . I'm doing physical therapy but there's little to no improvement yet. Any advice?Thank you

    It takes a long time to build the hip and core muscles back after limping and in pain for so long pre surgery. You have to hang in there and work on consistency. Have you tried pool work?

    Initially yes when it’s sore, you have to take weight off or after surgery etc. then when you are better - to reduce a limp and you can load bear well, you put in same side to improve the weight bearing

    @@eryckaferretiz2424 My physio got me to practise with each side. She said its not just a case of which side is injured, but also a case of which is your dominant arm. Maybe try it with each side and see which works better for you. All the best.

    I destroyed my ankle & broke both lower leg bones... Just starting to put weight back on it in rehab... This is such a stupid problem to have... Learning to walk again. 🙄

    this is probably something you don’t want to hear because you’ve gone through so much but the more positive you are and the more faith you have and trying to see the good helps a lot, you honestly could be worse there are people that don’t have legs and i know it’s so hard to see the good in things when you’re going through a situation where you’re just hurting and you feel like it’s not getting any better , i know that feeling i’ve always been an angry person once I started seeing the positive I felt so much better I broke my ankle last month. Not the same situation but hope you’re healing healthy

    While using 1 crutch, WHY is the instruction to use the crutch on the side of the BAD leg - isn't it supposed to be the REVERSE? Majority of videos I see recommend using the crutch on the side of the GOOD Leg?

    I'm doin 100% weight bearing on 1 crutch recovering from a distal femur do my daily knee exercises b4 my walks yet my knee is stiff to bend after my heel strike how can I help myself out of this to get a normal gait thanks

    With all due respect, I agree - 9 out of 10 doctors and physios say single crutch should be on *opposite* side of injured leg. Why? Because it still splits the weight while facilitating a more normal, balanced gait. Try it. You'll find you walk more normally with the crutch on the opposite side while striking ground same time as injured foot. Having the crutch on the injured leg side causes a stilted gait, not conducive to getting back to normal. Thanks.

    @@physiorehabLike how minutes a day you think? I'm recovering from a fractured fibula and the orthopedic surgeon (which 2 hours away) said I can start to walk with a boot on March 6. We don't have a orthopedic rehab in our city, they all moved away.

    The limping is there but after a few weeks the limping will minimal but as you get out of bed the limping will be there

    Putting the crutch on the side is the 'good leg' is the better method when you want to reduce some of the weight bearing of the injured leg.
