When our little Yorkie was tiny, (less then 3 pounds) we couldn't find a harness that fit, so didn't do these walks. I learned about them in Michele's course at the Pro Level, and was jealous of everyone else's enthusiasm for how decompressing these walks really are. Once I was able to tailor a xxs harness to fit her comfortably, wow! We love our decompression walks! She is now a huge 6 pounds, and that little one just runs and sniffs and has a wonderful time! We started out in a local cemetery that allows dogs, then when her shots were done we moved up to fields and even some trails around where we live! Never thought that such a tiny little bit would love being outside exploring this much!

Thank you for sharing your experience with decompression walks, Peg! You never know how great they are until you try them and then there's no going back :)

The discovery of decompression walks was a game changer when I got my cavapoo puppy, Poppy. She was 8 weeks when we got her and I think I joined Michele's online course at the pro level when Poppy was 10 weeks old. She didn't have all her vaccinations yet and we live in a townhouse without a yard. My vet said I couldn't take her out in the neighborhood because of high parvo rates in our area. Learning about the decompression walk and that I could take her to big empty parking lots made a huge difference in her behavior over all. We found a big church parking lot that has lots of room, is in a fairly quiet location and several redwood trees. Poppy loved it! We went twice a day always when the church and it's grounds weren't being used. She's 18 months old now and we now go on one decompression walk a day along an estuary in our neighborhood. She's a happy pup!

I’ve been watching videos like this for about 1.5 years and researching/studying from several trainers. Now I’m finally getting a new puppy (last time I got a puppy was 13 years ago). Thank you so much!!

I am a member of the your on-line course but I did not submit anything yet because I was being proactive. I am finally getting the puppy this weekend. I walk a friend's dog. We average about 4 kilometers on the walk. He is a sniffer. These are neighborhood walks. Once he is sniffing he is hardly distracted unless a vehicle with a siren goes by or when another dog starts barking at him or when we have to cross a street. These are only minor distractions for him.

Hi Chris! We fully believe in the benefit of being pro-active! Good for you. Let us know which kind of walk your new pup enjoys most. All dogs have different preferences!

my dog does 60% sniffing 40% walking while I bring her for a walk every day. I bring her to the park during the walk and leave her off the lead when there's no other person or fog around. she's very good most of the time on the lead now and stops and waits when we come to a road crossing. I leave the lead a little bit loose and even when she's whining because she wants to keep going she always waits for me to say "ok!" or for me to start walking again. most of the walk she doesn't pull but she will pull on the lead at least once per walk. 95 times out of 100 she was I'll come to me when I call her too no matter what the distraction is. did I mention she's only a year and a half old.

This sounds very helpful, but I end up having to hover over my 13 week old puppy because she eats everything she can find-rocks, mulch, plants, weeds, grass, bird poop, etc. Any advice?

That's one way to think about it! The decompression walk is meant to allow our dog to be a dog!

Why not let them off lead if you have good recall and the environment is safe.

Great question! We're so happy to hear that you have established a great relationship with your pup and encourage a safe environment for them. We recommend a long leash while on decompression walks to be extra safe.
