Canine Enrichment More Than Just Puzzle Toys For Dogs // Canine enrichment and enrichment ideas are more than just puzzle toys to keep your dog busy. Brain games are an important part of your dog’s mental exercise. We can thank Hal Markowitz for helping us understand the need for our dogs to have enrichment activities. If you have a new puppy or you’re working on dog training you’re going to want to incorporate the right enriching activities into your dog’s daily life otherwise you could still end up with unwanted behaviors, even with puppy training efforts. Check out the DIY dog toys and puzzle toys for dogs but just know they aren’t all your dog needs when it comes to harnessing all their energy and handling natural instincts such as digging and barking in a productive way. In order to balance your dog’s physical needs, you need to provide the right balance of decompression walks, training, leash skills and so much more. In this video, you’ll discover a deep dive into canine enrichment and how it goes beyond toys for dogs.

Yes, I've learned that my 6 month old Mountain View Cur (a high energy scent hound - hunting dog) needs exposure to a variety smells very day. When she gets lots of exposure she bits less, barks less, obeys commands betters, and seems happier.

Hi thank you for this! I am on day 5 with my mini austrailian shepherd. I have been following your schedule and he has done great using the potty and feeding times. We're still working not crying too much at night but for a 9 week old I am very impressed with his ability to regulate. I am going to introduce the lick mat and food puzzle today to hopefully get him more mental stimulation.

Hi! Thank you so much for your clear, calm instruction. My pup isn’t here yet, but he will be soon and, of all the instructional videos on KZread for new puppy owners, yours rings all the bells for me. Honestly, your well-modulated tone and tempo are so helpful. Many other trainers on KZread speak so fast and cover so much info in a short time that it leaves ME feeling overwhelmed and fearful. LOL I don’t need that, and I sure don’t want to share it with my pup. I love your helpful FB page and will subscribe to “30 Days” very soon. Thanks again for your great work!

I put all of my dog’s toys into a box so that he can choose what he wants to play with that day. Bonus is it gives him a fun activity to dig out the toy he’s looking for. It also gives me guilt when he’s looking for a toy I threw away because he destroyed it already. 😅

Thank you so much for the great ideas for enrichment activities! I also am about to bring home our puppy in a few weeks! I’m watching Michelle’s videos in preparation! There is so much to prepare for the puppy that I wanted to get ahead with some of the training skills before she arrived! I find Michelle’s training approach logical and helpful! I’ve fostered a service dog in training, and her training approach aligns in many ways with the training methods the service dog trainers taught us! I can’t wait till our puppy comes home and I start training her with Michelle’s online classes!!

Is there any enrichment for dogs that Iove to shred stuff. I regularly come home to ripped up flyers. Not the worst thing because it's flyers but I don't want my boy to eat the paper

Shredding is great for dogs! You can teach him to not eat the paper, or reinforce it when he doesn't. A lot of the dogs we work with love to shred paper and get to do it regularly (but yes, it is messy!).

That sounds like a lot of puppy energy!! We hope this video gave you some good ideas of mental enrichment to try as well. We'd suggest trying out a decompression walk, which is a calm walk, but uses a lot of mental energy as it lets your dog just decompress. You can learn more about this here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/n3in2qeuksmre7Q.htmlsi=E3cWK7TTQgVLFVtO If you're worried about the growth plates, check with your vet!

My mini schnauzer is 3 and into everything. She is my world and I love her so much. As a puppy, if she had something that could harm her, i would get her a treat so she would drop the unsafe item quickly. You know where this is going....how do i fix this. She gets things she isnt supposed to because she knows she will get a treat.

Thanks for watching, Misty! If you're seeing attention seeking behaviors like this, it's important to take a moment to ask yourself if you're filling your dog's emotional cup and exercising them mentally! A great way to do this is enrichment and mental stimulation. We hope this video was full of some great ideas - we would definitely recommend giving some of them a try!

Loved the video, but I can’t quite get behind stopping a dog from digging. I understand there are certain breeds with more of a need for this and an outlet is a good idea for them, but just like humans, dogs should know what not to do as well as what to do.

  • @HowToTrainADreamDog

Digging is a natural behavior for dogs that can sometimes get out of hand if not channeled properly. Dogs that dig excessively tend to dig out of boredom. You may have every toy imaginable for them to chew on or play with but unless you engage in play with them they are going to choose an activity like digging that is more satisfying to do. Some dogs just need to dig no matter how much exercise they’ve received. You can either build a dig box or you can create a pit with large stones around it to establish the designated area. It is important to supervise your pup and redirect them to the appropriate location if they try to dig elsewhere. When first introducing the pit, bury bones and/or treats just under the surface to encourage the pup to dig. You can then start to bury them a little deeper. Several of our students have purchased this toy for their pups who like to dig. It's a little more of an investment but so far everyone has reported that it’s worth it. That might be an option for you as well. www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/idig

@@HowToTrainADreamDog Thank you for your perspective. I appreciate that you have taken the time to respond. Those are great ideas, but I also believe that dogs can learn to curb their natural desires by having other productive active outlets and letting them know that digging is unwanted.
