While we now know that frequent plowing may not be the best for the soil structure, it is always great to watch and pleasant to do it oneself. Especially if one has a good team of horses or mules, like you.

I hate that brother. I put it out on the channel last week and Facebook. If I had thought about it, I’d have text ya. I apologize buddy. Brush Creek Plow day is coming up on Melber KY May 11th. Put that on your list! It’s a good one too. Anyway, you’re right on the evener too. I plan to do an in depth video soon on walking plows and really get deep into it. Good tutorial on the plow hitch. One important thing to add is the evener width. 12-inch plow needs a 33-inch evener, and a 14-inch plow needs a 38-inch. Also, if the lead mule drifts out, a short check line from lead mule bit to the furrow mules hame helps to steady the lead mule. Good plowing.

Mr Odom this is a really nice job on this farm, and Mrs Marcy did an awesome job on her first time hand plowing. I was impressed with her skills and all it takes to do this kind of fun work. I enjoyed the tutorial on how you get the plow set up for you,Kate and Alice. They look like they were having some fun work too. Very nice of the ladies providing lunch and all the trimmings. I need to dig my Massey #51 out and get a pair going on it. I was talking with an old gent I was working for once and he farmed in stony ground and hard clay, he said in the fall time he had 2 giant bruises and scrapes on each side of his ribs from the plow handles smashing into him, beat him black and blue every time it hit a boulder. There are no plow days anywhere near me that I know of in Ontario, but when I was a teenager we went to one each spring and fall and had lots of fun.

Hey there! Yes, plowing with a walking plow in hard ground or rocks is tough! With a riding plow it’s just as dangerous or worse because it’ll throw you off of it at times. So you just have to be careful. Thanks for watching and the kind words! Take care and do come again, please

My plow is a 12” wide plow, and you always wanna plow 1/2 as deep as you are wide. So I was trying to maintain 6” depth. Thank you for the kind words and for watching as always my friend! You’re a jewel! Take care and do come again, please!

Zach...that was a smooth plowing lesson, with the plow cutting through the soil with ease. How would that have been on a hillside? Just wondering?

Thank you sir! So on a hillside, you’d really wanna start at the bottom and plow back to back going uphill. So you avoid dead furrows and back furrows. A two way plow is needed in that situation. I noticed the gentleman with the spotted drafts had a left hand plow. Makes for a lonely day, you can't plow with everybody else. LOL I have an Oliver 23 two way. Don't get to use the left bottom much unless I'm at home alone.

Something is wrong in this picture, you and your wife are the only ones that are walking the guys with the 4000 lbs team they were sitting down with no difficulty with their plowing, but the way neither of you had troubles with your plowing. As always very interesting and still educational for a farm boy only used machinery.

Mine do pretty well with my 12” riding plow although it is more load and requires more breaks than my 12” walking plow by far. The style of the point on the two plows are completely different and make the riding plow pull harder. It is more modern type plow share. Thank you sir! I don’t use one on this particular plow. You don’t really need it if you set it right. This plow is well balanced. I have a big pioneer walking plow, and it has a gauge wheel. But it’s really heavy, and doesn’t balance as good. Gauge helps a little on it. Especially when you hit a soft spot and keeps the plow from nose diving. When you set a gauge wheel, it just sorta needs to be hitting the ground every now and then while plowing. Not riding on it all the time. It’s for just when you hit those soft spots. My walking plow is a 12”. Now most of the riding plows were 14’s. If I was gonna plow a right smart with a riding plow and especially a 14”…I’d opt for three mules or horses. They’ll just handle those bigger plows better. Especially if the ground is a little tough. Walking plows usually pull a little easier especially a slat wing like mine. Less friction. Gee, if I showed up at one of these plow days when you are there, would you show me how? I have always wanted to learn to plow, but I had no one to help me. My team didn't know what they were doing, I didn't know what I was doing, and we didn't even get in the ballpark.

Which is harder on the mules logging or plowing ?

I’d say logging just because the pulls are harder most times. Short pulls but harder heavier pulls. Whereas farming is slow steady work! Both is good for a team. Thanks for the question and also, thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Thank you! Take care and do come again, please!

Yessir. They’re nice not having to make rounds. Just go back and forth. Of course you gotta get your animals use to both of them walking in a furrow. Sometimes it confuses them lol. Anyway, thanks for watching and commenting. Take care and do come again, please
