Walking New York City’s MOST DANGEROUS HOOD, Brownsville Brooklyn!

Ойын-сауық

Walking New York City’s Most Dangerous Hood, Brownsville Brooklyn!
Filmed March 5, 2022
The neighborhood is generally bordered by Crown Heights to the northwest; Bedford and Cypress Hills to the north; East New York to the east; Canarsie to the south; and East Flatbush to the west.
Brownsville was first used by the Dutch for farming, as well as manufacturing stone slabs and other things used to construct buildings. Development started in the early 1880s by William Suydam. But somehow he failed to pay the mortgage and as a result Charles S. Brown later won the land in an auction and built more houses; by 1883, the community was already being called Brown’s Village, a name that eventually became Brownsville.
Through the 1880s, Brownsville was used as a dumping ground. Fumes from the glue factories along Jamaica Bay would usually blow upwind into Brownsville. This place was inconveniently far enough from Manhattan that the wealthy refused to move to Brownsville, but the land was cheap enough that tenements could be built for the poor there!
Brownsville was predominantly Jewish from the 1880s until the 1950s. The vast majority of Brownsville residents were born outside the United States; in 1910, 66% of the population were first-generation immigrants, and 80% of these immigrants were from Russia. By 1920, over 80,000 of the area's 100,000 inhabitants were Russian Jews, and Brownsville had been nicknamed "Little Jerusalem".
In the 1930s it was considered the most densely populated district in all of Brooklyn. Brownsville was also considered to have the highest density of Jews of any place in the United States through the 1950s.
Let’s talk about the crime:
In the 1930s, Brownsville become the birthplace of Murder, Inc. contracted to kill between 400 and 1,000 people through the 1940s. The organizations' criminal businesses also extended to nearby neighborhoods of Ocean Hill and East New York. The members mainly consisted of Jewish and Italian Americans because during that time were mainly populated by Jewish and Italian people!
At that time also African Americans had begun moving into Brooklyn in large numbers and Most of the new residents were poor and socially disadvantaged, who were mostly migrants from the Jim Crow-era South where they were racially discriminated against.  In 1940, black residents made up 6% of Brownsville's population. By 1950, there was double the number of blacks, most of whom occupied the neighborhood's most undesirable housing.  At the same time, new immigration quotas had reduced the number of Russian Jews who were able to immigrate to the United States.
The neighborhood was racially segregated and African Americans were banned from some public places where Jews were allowed, and the New York City Police Department (NYPD) generally behaved more harshly toward blacks than toward Jews.
The breaking point for the area's Jewish population came about in the 1950s when the New York City Housing Authority decided to build more new public housing. The Jewish population quickly moved out and Brownsville become a hub for black and Latino residents.
So if we see the history then Brownsville then the crime is not new here.

Some folks like to forget that real, ordinary, good people live in these types of neighborhoods. A city just isn’t the nice, pretty parts. I appreciate your willingness to show us the less desirable parts of NYC. But please make sure you stay safe.

Thank you for visiting Brownsville. I'll pass on a tip I learned when I lived in a dangerous neighborhood. I carried a decoy purse with nothing valuable in it. I carried valuables in pockets I sewed inside my clothes. When people grabbed my purse and ran away, they only got a cheap purse, not my I.D., keys or money.

While it does have a dangerous reputation, it does have like every neighborhood, working man and women who are just living their lives and trying to live their lives to the best anyone can, just like the rest of us. Thank you Sifat for showing us this and showing the best of us. Stay safe my friend and be blessed

As a child, in the early 70's, I lived in this area. The video passed by my old block (Saratoga Ave between Pitkin and Sutter Ave), and I remember catching the subway at the Sutter Ave station. I agree with one of the other comments made when he said there are a lot of ordinary good people who live in this area. However, it was a dangerous place to live, but most people (my family included) who lived in Brownsville probably didn't have much choice because of a lack of family finances (low income). I haven't been to this area in many years, so seeing the old neighborhood briefly took me down memory lane.

East New York was mostley Italian , Irish, Polish , and Jewish. as rough as the area was it was a great place to grow up and you became what we called street smart. you knew where to be and not to be. i went into the military in 1963 and served till 1969. i lived in New York till 1971 and i than moved to Florida where i still live today. i do still miss New York .

@10:25 The man you encountered was explaining that the way you were holding the camera apparently could have been interpreted as a gang sign, especially since it wasn't obvious to him that you were filming. The man was partially blurred in your video but he showed with his hands the way you must have been holding the camera and how you should be holding it so that you do not have a negative encounter (in that particular neighborhood). In his closing comments, the man told you to realize where you were. In his odd way, he was trying to help you. Be careful out there, Sifat.

I think I understand Brownsville residents, they don’t like people who view them as low lives simply because of their economic background. As someone who lives in a fairly middle class neighborhood, the pretentiousness of some of these white collar workers is enough to make anyone’s blood boil. So I understand why these residents are hostile to outsiders because they refuse to be disrespected.

I had to work here for 15 years and yes it's very dangerous. There was a stabbing a few yards from where I worked, broad daylight, you could see the body lay out for hours in the morning.

It is because Brown people reside there, danger is not synonymous with Black folk, lived in the South Bronx as a kid and teenager and never had issues. I live out west with crazies and gun lovers. I am more on guard here than I ever was in the Bronx and in Brooklyn. My 81-year-old father still lives in the hood in the Bronx, still walks every day and never has an issue with anyone. For the bad ones, there are great hard-working people in the hoods who have spent entire lives and have raised generations of family.

I don't see any homeless, panhandlers, or protestors. From what I heard this area is a crime hotspot in the summer of 2023, a lot of shootings and fights in general. There had to be increased police presence.
