We open with a flashback to Negan’s time as leader of The Saviors. We see him sitting in his signature spot at the head of the table in his office at the Sanctuary. Next to him we see his barbed wire bat, Lucille, and his classic red scarf from the comics. We also saw him wearing this scarf the first time he met Maggie-and well, you know. [clip, kills Glenn, bonk]
In walks Simon, Negan’s former right hand man from the original series. Negan and Simon eventually have a big falling out, but for the bulk of the series he’s a loyal servant to Negan. Negan delegated offering pickups to characters like Simon.
For instance Simon ran pickups from The Kingdom, whereas Simon ran pickups from Hilltop, Magie’s group. [clip]
So this scene takes place before Negan’s introduction in season 6 of The Walking Dead, so it’s long before Simon’s betrayal.
While Simon is taking Negan down to the Crow-At’s torture room, we hear him suggest to Negan that perhaps he would be a better fit for leadership training than a maniac like the Crow-At. [clip, “someone not unlike”]
This is foreshadowing Simon’s eventual betrayal and desire to replace Negan as the leader of The Saviors. [clip]
So in episode 2 of Dead City we heard Negan tell Maggie about a young girl from the Kingdom that the Crow-At tortured-despite Negan having told him not to. [clip]
So here we’re getting to see the aftermath of that scene. Negan is unusually quiet in this scene. Instead we hear Simon grilling the Crow-At for violating a direct order and telling him that kids are a line they don’t cross. [clip]
Negan’s silence shows us just how despondent he is by what the Crow-At has done. Negan is very rarely found speechless. He’s realized that he tried to tame a beast that’s untamable and in the process created an even more psychotic monster. This eventually leads to Negan trying to down the Crow-At like a rabid dog. [clip, I tried to kill him but I just got his ear, from ep 2]
At the end of last week's episode, Luther finds Negan’s Wanted Poster and attacks him. And then this happened… [clip, Luther falling on spike]
Other members of the group are now looking for Luther. But since Luther was very critical of the plan to save Herschell from the Crow-At, everyone just assumes he left. [clip, Negan “he wasn't big on this plan]
Here we can see Nagan’s hand wrapped up from his knock knock joke injury. [clip, Negan putting guys head through glass and saying knock]
Negan asks Maggie if she’s seen his matches, she lies and says no. But in the previous episode we saw her using his matches to almost burn Jenny’s stuffed dinosaur so that Negan won’t know she’s in New York.
So Negan and Maggie are both hiding something from one another. Maggie’s hiding the fact that Jenny has come to find him, and Negan is hiding that he inadvertently killed Luther.
The guilt begins to eat away at Maggie, so she’s going to tell Negan the truth about Jenny being in New York. But then she sees Luther’s can of lip balm in Negan’s bag. And this is actually kind of funny because we saw this scene last week. [clip, Negan asking to use Luther’s balm]

I loved Impact Winter. The voice acting was so good, I knew that I had heard a few of the voices before and when I saw the cast list I realized WHY the voice acting was so good. If you have never listened to an audio book, it is so nice to listen when you are on a walk, doing housework, or even crafting!! Give it a listen, you don’t even need to use a credit to get this book.

Maggie often wears near knee high heavy motorcycle style boots. Why? To remember her Father Hershel who lost a leg after being bitten on the calf. Negan is carrying a single edged Bowie style knife. Is he planning on splitting firewood? The flat edge is fir striking with a section of wood or batoning to split firewood. Remember the giant David and Sasha Bowie or the guyt splitter on the pool table? A survival or wood splitter. A two edged wider dagger always fur slash and backslash. And you can gut from either direction. Wrong tool for the job, Brian! A waste of good viscera!
I'm stoked about this series, I cannot wait to see Maggie take on that Zombie Spiderman looking mofo.. 10*s another great episode
I loved this episode but I do have one dumb gripe…there should have been way more walker bodies when they looked down from the catwalk. My dumb complaint…but I loved the episode.
Impact Winter is a must listen.
I love that they brought Steven Ogg back. Loved his character in the Original Series

To me, Negans' encounter with the Croat is no different than his encounter with Rick. Two monsters that happened to run into each other. Neither Negan nor Rick started as bad guys. "But hell, maybe they both were the entire time." ^ They absolutely were. Both did super terrible shit to people because...people did terrible shit to them. Rick and Morgan literally did things in season 8 way darker than anything this show has done. If Summit isn't a masterpiece, can we let this IP die, please?
