Walk Through 2020 Airstream Caravel 16RB Small Light Weight Travel Trailer

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

2020 Caravel 16RB starting at $60,900
There’s no reason your getaway vehicle shouldn’t have just as much style as your home. The revival of our historic Caravel line has a just-right modern interior, with clean lines and sophisticated residential fixtures, and a neutral canvas on which you can add your personal taste.
Four clever floor plans
There’s plenty of room and storage for a short weekend or an extended trip with dedicated sleeping space, convertible dinette/sleeping space, a kitchen with all the essentials, and an on-board restroom.
Light, smooth, and easy towing
The Caravel line includes some of our most lightweight travel trailers that you can tow with an SUV. And no matter your tow vehicle, you’ll enjoy the benefits of the iconic Airstream travel trailer design with its lower center of gravity, weight distribution, and aerodynamic aluminum shell.
Appliances you’ll want to use
The Caravel galley has extra design touches that get the inspiration going - like the stainless steel gas stove with cast-iron burners, Baraldi vent, special black Moen® faucet, and rectangular stainless sink. It’s amazing how much more enjoyable cooking can be when you love the space.
A new spin on the Caravel name
The Airstream Caravel was first introduced in 1956 and continuously appeared in our lineup as a lightweight, nimble option. The Caravel name comes from early European sailing ships specifically good at sailing windward. Our founder Wally Byam loved the sea and had many adventures of his own onboard, so it’s easy to see where the inspiration came from. The new Caravel is a nod to the name’s history and to all of the windward adventures you’ll have with it.

I have a 2018 Sport '16, from Colonial. I took off six weeks and pulled it to California. I took many two lane highways and often boondocked in rest areas and Elks Lodges I spent several nights at 10 degrees and stayed warm. It's like pulling a tiny metal house that goes anywhere and is very sturdy and pulls so smoothly that it 'disappears'. It fits in small 'forgotten' county campgrounds in the east. I can park anywhere with a double parking space including all small PA towns that are far off the interstate. I keep moving, doin't unhook it from the pickup and don't require 30amp or dump station that often, and then i check into a campground. For me, anything longer would mean a triple parking space. The extra content looks good, stone guards (i need them), bumper with hose (bike rack??), style - panoramic window, etc. - fancy hvac :( Colonial service has been excellent. When trade in time comes, i'll be back. R

I’m just starting to consider the use of a travel trailer a little later in my life. The more I look into it, the more questions have come to mind. This video is to promote a particular trailer. It's nice, but having two axles in case of a blow out adds confidence of maintaining control. You can also drove slowly a limited distance on three wheels to get off an interstate if need be then. I have owned both types.

When i was a kid in the 70s my parents bought a used airstream. I think it was on one axel, but it was a great layout because the sleeping setup made so much sense for a family of 4. The whole front area was a kitchen and the seating converted to a double bed, then there was a folding vinyl 'door' into a hallway with twin beds on either side - this is ideal - parents get their double with a somewhat private area together with the kitchen and the entrance way and the kids have their 'area'. Walking between the two twin beds to the end of the hall was a bathroom and shower all in one. Moreover one of the twin beds had a cot bunk over it, but i think that was something the previous owner had added. There was only two of us kids most of the time so we rarely used that cot for sleeping, but it was an awesome area to throw any clothing items when you're both camping and traveling. There were hanging closets on either side just outside of the bathroom. I think my parents had one and we had the other. Both twins had a window and of course there was a window across the whole front. The thing even had an a/c, in the ceiling where it belongs but we rarely used it. Keeping all those windows propped open usually created a great cross breeze, whether you're in the mountains or at the beach. We travelled only in the summer so never needed the heat. We had great great times, though now it makes me claustrophobic just thinking how we could have lived in there for weeks. But main point is that seeing all these newer layouts makes me really appreciate the one we had. It was simple and no frills, but it was amazingly logical for a family. It's important for each kid to have their own twin, not a double. I don't understand why now it has to be either/or. Parents should have a double or queen, kids should have twins. What Airstream should do is take that old layout and enhance it so that both twins have somehow foldable bunks. Oh and also, there was plenty of storage both above and below the twins. Best things is the kids' beds never have to be put away, so on a rainy day we would spend hours on those beds, playing games, reading and such. While the parents could be more in their end up front. The only single enhancement i would make, aside from the built-in bunks that i mentioned, would be a separate shower from the bathroom area. How exactly i don't know. But when you improve things it is important to not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Nowadays they add so many bells and whistles and a luxurious appearance, but all those gadgets take up precious space, but do they add simplicity of use of the space for a family lifestyle? For music my dad used to bring a high quality boom box. It was good enough. The idea was to experience nature. I wonder if Airstream makes that layout anymore. I haven't seen it.

@@colonialairstream I think there was also another similar layout (a slightly larger model), but with the twin beds at the opposite end and all the bathroom and closet area in the middle. In some ways even better, though probably harder to muster bunks in the end of an airstream due to its shape, I would guess. On the other hand who these days has more than two kids and can afford an airstream? So so much for need of any bunks. I think what's changed that drives the changed layouts is the demographic of how people vacation. I can't even remember the last time i saw an airstream or for that matter any average size trailer being pulled by a car with a whole big family inside. I think most RVr's these days are either well-off retirees or very young childless couples sort of putting their all into the RV life 'while they can'. I think there's a bunch of reasons for this but they all boil down to the unpredictability of tomorrow. Living expenses, primarily of your average family housing, have grown out of all proportion with the average family income. After all is said and done people have so little left over. Families fall apart with immense frequency. People do not think long-term because they don't feel they have that luxury. Finally the prices of large trailers themselves are completely ridiculous and also out of proportion with people's incomes or leisure savings. There pretty much are none. To buy one of these things you have to think along the lines of a long-term investment and be pretty confident about mid-term plans for your family's living and vacationing style. But i think there is very little of that psychological comfort around. So family people prefer to rent/share vacation houses instead. On a per-day basis it may even be more expensive, but then it's done and over with, no strings attached, no maintenance required, which nobody these days has time for anyway with how ridiculously overworked and busy people are. And i need not repeat that the US has THE absolutely least vacation time of any developed country in the world. But the result is that where/how you stay has little to do with any memories made, and people make do with that. I used to love the fact that we never had to rush to pack or unpack, at least not in a rush (my mom the housewife would start loading up the trailer weeks in advance at her leisure :)) but people now accept that hassle as part of vacation. Checkout time is at 11, and you have to pack up the whole family, clean the place spotless and be on your way. Phew, need a vacation now just to rest from all that exertion. So anyway, long story short, having just stumbled upon some of these videos about airstreams, i am intrigued by how the layouts have changed to pretty much suit just couples, with maybe one small baby, but that's about it. In fact i can easier see two couples in some of these rather than a family. Just interesting.

I think you have to factor in that so many cars people are forced to buy are the size of shoeboxes. You can’t tow a large trailer unless you have a truck or suv. That equals a double outlay of cash for trailer and tow vehicle. If you get down to a Jeep commander which I currently have it needs to have a lower tongue weight. It’s a v6 so engine and axles can’t handle it.

Reading the reply above was like describing our 31’ 1974 Airstream. Perfect layout in every way. I haven’t seen one to compare with it. Bathroom across the back, tub, shower, sink, two nice closets and sliding door. Twin beds in the middle, nice kitchen with big oven and four burner cook top. Queen size bed up front and twin also. We bought it used in 2002 for $5,000, perfect condition. Also had a cabana built to protect it from the weather. Traveling days are over but I take my dog Daisy out and sit with a bowl of spaghettini and listen to Olivia Newton John sing ‘Don’t Play B Seventeen’ and soak up the sweet memories.

After watching a video from another place then finding one of your videos on another model I was happy to see you’ve done a video on this one too. Great job again on this one too. Something I thought about both models is the bins with the pass through. You don’t have to lug everything into the trailer. Instead you can fill the bins without having to squeeze by other occupants and bend to the floor. With the solar, something that occurs to me is it would be better to have the auxiliary panel able to supplement the others. You’d have more power available and you could recharge more quickly in case you arrive late and need to finish charging in the morning. At least with your thoroughness it allows someone like me to ask the question and give airstream an opportunity to make changes later. It’s by feedback that helps them improve.

As always, thank you Patrick for your wonderful and professional walk through. This is my favorite Airstream!!! Dear Airstream - here are my personal suggestions for ALL your 16ft campers. 1) please put a small sink in your wet baths - in a COVID world - this is a must! If truck campers and 13 ft Scamps can do it, then surely Airstream can. 2) more outlets, especially up at the head of the bed. 3). a convection microwave option. 4). Maybe separate gray/black tanks - as small as they would be it would be a nice feature. I believe these small tweaks would not change the configuration of any of your smallest campers but improve the quality immensely. I love Airstream and plan to own one in the future - but for the quality/price, I’m surprised Airstream does not have these features already. Airstream isn’t just a travel trailer - it’s an heirloom!!! Also, one more suggestion - Caravel in the light color (Barcelona Blue - like the Bambi). 😂. Wow! Now there’s my camper!!! Thanks for listening.

Guys, one thing I’ve learned from watching a huge amount of these trailer and RV videos is yes, Airstreams are expensive compared to other similar models from other makers BUT with Airstream you aren’t paying the money for bells and whistles you are paying the money for superior quality build and fixture and fittings. There is a reason you see so many older models of airstreams around because they are built to last. When you make the decision to purchase an Airstream you a buying into a lifestyle. I implore you to research and watch some making videos of other brands then watch how airstreams are made and you will quickly realise why they are so “expensive”. You really do get what you pay for...

That seems like a really nice size and plan for one or two people with maybe a dog for a weekend. It's got all the essentials in a pretty minimal length, and you don't have to convert the dinette to a bed every night. It's especially remarkable how compact the kitchen is. Also, the wet bath makes it extremely compact as well. Perhaps too compact... I think I'd like to see essentially the same plan stretched 3 feet to provide room for a separate shower stall in the bathroom, and to provide an extra cabinet with drawers and countertop in the kitchen. That would make it more practical for longer stays with more elaborate meals, even for permanent living for one or two. Airstream makes a Caravel 19CB, but I don't like that plan nearly as well (the bed seems too cramped shoehorned in side by side with the bath in the back of the trailer). None of the other Caravel plans offer wraparound windows front and rear. That's what really makes the 16RB stand out. One other thing I like about the 16RB, the refrigerator is small enough to be a true under-counter unit. The others (in the larger Caravels) stick up too high and make it impractical to use the countertop as a work surface, leaving just the dinette table as your work surface (except the 20FB which has a more generous kitchen work area).

Great review on both the 16rb and 19cb. We are in the market for a 16rb or 19cb, we can't decide on which one to get. We love the wrap-around window on the 16, 19 has a dry bath and separate gray & black tanks. Which one holds a better resale value? What are the pros & cons of the combined tank in the 16rb?
