CLIP DESCRIPTION:
John (Joaquin Phoenix) performs "Cocaine Blues" and gets the prisoners revved up in Folsom Prison.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
James Mangold's Walk the Line tells the life story of country music legend Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix), focusing primarily on the long courtship he had with June Carter (Reese Witherspoon). The film is structured as an extended flashback opening with Cash readying to take the stage at his historic Folsom Prison Concert. The film touches on his childhood, relating a horrific early incident from his life and establishing the troubled relationship he would have with his father (Robert Patrick). Cash joins the military and leaves home. During his time in the armed services he begins writing songs and romances a hometown girl (Ginnifer Goodwin). After the end of his duty he settles down and attempts to begin a music career, but his wife has trouble adjusting to his dreams. Cash auditions for Sam Phillips (Dallas Roberts), signs to Sun Records, and soon finds himself on tour with a roster of young soon-to-be legends that includes Elvis Presley (Tyler Hilton) and Jerry Lee Lewis (Waylon Malloy Payne). On this tour he meets June Carter, the daughter of the famous Carter family, and they take a liking to each other, although she refuses any serious advances from him. Cash gains world-wide fame thanks in part to the inspiration he gets from June, but eventually his marriage crumbles and he develops a serious drug addiction. The film is based on Cash's autobiographies. Phoenix and Witherspoon performed all of their own singing in the movie, just as Sissy Spacek and Beverly D'Angelo did in Coal Miner's Daughter a quarter-century before.

It was Joaquín singing?! I haven't seen the movie yet, I guess I was too young to be interested when it came out but from the short clips I've seen, the singing is eerily similar to John. I thought it was John singing.

I'm gunna be honest it sounds nothing like Johnny Cash... But that doesn't detract from how absolutely amazing phoenix was in this movie and the attempt to sing like him is really impressive. The voice is off but he has the inflection and cadence down perfectly. He really did the best he could do, that anyone could do imo

I swear this is such a testament as to how good Joaquin can act. He got Johnny’s serious eyes perfect. I just love Johnny Cash.

@@mattygeno not wide eyed. Many people have done illegal drugs every day for awhile including myself. I'm sure to someone like you we should be locked up for life or executed. Dark impulses of beating or hurting women was what I was referring to, many of his not so popular songs refer to this. So, mr. deep and insightful, I will attempt to enlighten you, probably a complete waste of time but.......... This world is tough, which means this world is a wonderful place and people are horrible, dishonest, self serving, but very predictable. Despite this predictability some of us need a break or at least the ability turn on the autopilot switch, this in no way earns us the viscous judgment of dishonest hypocrites probably guilty of far far worse crimes against people than a little dust inside of a small baggie. Sad sad dilemma we find our society in, where evil is rewarded and integrity is crushed into nothing in hopes that it never inconveniences evil again in the future. 👋👀 You're heart gets finally broken in this life when either you see your heroes as human or realize love is simply a product of probability or timing. Best regards.

@@Timothy1987 I think the movie did benefit more with Joaquin singing it instead of just using recordings of Johnny Cash. The main reason is because if they used the recordings of the real Johnny cash, then it would make people ask the question of “Why should I bother staying on these scenes? I can easily listen to Johnny Cash”. Having Joaquin Phoenix sing instead of Johnny Cash works a lot better because it makes the movie more unique. I hope this made sense!

At this time in his career, Johnny had begun to make his views on the war in Vietnam known, and it wasn't accepted by everyone. When the album came out my dad grabbed the promo copy and sent it to Columbia with a note that "Mr. Cash said that he would be glad to autograph a copy of this." He got the album back with the autograph and a note from Columbia that read, "We were glad to make this request for you, but we were under the impression that you would actually buy the album."

I just found out abt him from joker. After I saw his performance in that movie, I'm in love. And then I just realized that he played Theodore in Her, that shook me cause I've seen that movie before but I never even realized that was him lol since then, I checked his works and wow he really is a magnificent actor, he's just brilliant. His portrayal of Johnny cash in this movie is just remarkable.

Joaquin Phoenix is literally the best. He can sing so good, act like a pro, and he’s the only socially awkward actor I can think of which I actually really admire because he’s not really the typical Hollywood personality and I enjoy it
