I swear, Joaquin Phoenix can do anything. The fact that he was really singing in this will always blow me away. That's not an easy voice to impersonate.

I'm gunna be honest it sounds nothing like Johnny Cash... But that doesn't detract from how absolutely amazing phoenix was in this movie and the attempt to sing like him is really impressive. The voice is off but he has the inflection and cadence down perfectly. He really did the best he could do, that anyone could do imo

He was nominated, but he didn't win.

I swear this is such a testament as to how good Joaquin can act. He got Johnny’s serious eyes perfect. Johnny suffered from dark impulses, he never acted on them, but I think this is what endeared him to prisoners and convicts, in his heart he knew there was very little difference between him and them. I just love Johnny Cash.

Dark impulses of beating or hurting women was what I was referring to, many of his not so popular songs refer to this. So, mr. deep and insightful, I will attempt to enlighten you, probably a complete waste of time but.......... This world is tough, which means this world is a wonderful place and people are horrible, dishonest, self serving, but very predictable. Despite this predictability some of us need a break or at least the ability turn on the autopilot switch, this in no way earns us the viscous judgment of dishonest hypocrites probably guilty of far far worse crimes against people than a little dust inside of a small baggie. Sad sad dilemma we find our society in, where evil is rewarded and integrity is crushed into nothing in hopes that it never inconveniences evil again in the future. 👋👀 You're heart gets finally broken in this life when either you see your heroes as human or realize love is simply a product of probability or timing. @@LSF45 no the prisoners actually were quiet, any yelling you hear on the album was edited in. The inmates were afraid of retaliation from the guards if they cheering about illegal activities

I love Joaquin. He’s a genuine artist. No hollywood theatrics, no publicity stunts. This guy goes radio silent for big stretches, gets into a character on an amazingly deep level, then comes outa f--in nowhere when he’s ready with an outstanding performance, and thats regardless of the movie too. He does good even when the movie is bad.

This scene gets better every time you watch it. It's one of the few songs that doesn't get old from listening to it multiple times in a row.

Besides him completely slaying this scene himself I have to say that it’s also his crowd and their completely RAW reaction to him. Their facial expressions are something else.

I still can’t believe he actually sang that. He truly is transformative.

@@Timothy1987 I think the movie did benefit more with Joaquin singing it instead of just using recordings of Johnny Cash. The main reason is because if they used the recordings of the real Johnny cash, then it would make people ask the question of “Why should I bother staying on these scenes? I can easily listen to Johnny Cash”. Having Joaquin Phoenix sing instead of Johnny Cash works a lot better because it makes the movie more unique. I hope this made sense!

This one is one of the best scenes ever made in the history of a movie, at least for me. Truly... the performance, singing, the build-up that goes through the entire movie, the guys who were in jail probably for years, having a short time of freedom through experiencing the music...

This movie one of my faves. The smirk on June's face here is priceless. 10/10

The look on Reese Witherspoon face as June, when he throws down that dirty glass of water just makes this scene more authentic.

Terrific singing for this show.

Joaquin has been one of my favorite actors since Gladiator. He is extremely versatile, and can play villains and sympathetic characters alike. He got robbed of the Oscar here but I knew he was gonna nab one for joker before the movie even came out. Hell, he was amazing in Parenthood too and he was only a kid then.

My dad interviewed Johnny Cash a few months before this concert, he produced a radio show and interviewed almost all of the performers for a venue named Melody Fair, located in WNY. At this time in his career, Johnny had begun to make his views on the war in Vietnam known, and it wasn't accepted by everyone. When the album came out my dad grabbed the promo copy and sent it to Columbia with a note that "Mr. Cash said that he would be glad to autograph a copy of this." I really admired how this movie started. Not many really understood the impact he had on incarcerated men. The movie started with a bang to help people understand those who identified with him. Great filmmaking and directing

There are movie stars and then there are true actors. He's def. in the latter. He may come off as difficult to work with or very eccentric or whatever he's been labeled over the years, but you can't deny that when it come's to his craft, he's truly one of the best in the business.

A sense of meaningful connection and a feeling of redemption takes so many forms. Music, art, writing, spoken word poetry and those who choose to forsake and sacrifice to be true to their inner "voice" are heroic beings in my eyes.

Great actor, deserved an Oscar for that performance.

This is with out a doubt Joaquin Phoenix's best performance & it not even close he brought Johnny Cash to life so perfectly & did an amazing job. Such a great movie.

I just want a girl to look at me the way Reese Witherspoon looks at Joaquin here.

I think because Jamie Fox won best actor the year before and they probably didn't want to give another best actor for yet another biographical movie just my theory

Joaquin was such a great actor in Gladiator it took me years and years to even like him, he played such a perfect slime ball.

I just found out abt him from joker. After I saw his performance in that movie, I'm in love. And then I just realized that he played Theodore in Her, that shook me cause I've seen that movie before but I never even realized that was him lol since then, I checked his works and wow he really is a magnificent actor, he's just brilliant. His portrayal of Johnny cash in this movie is just remarkable.

I just found him in Joker and now I'm watching all of his movies. I don't think it matters when someone discovers something they love. We should all be happy that we know him and can enjoy his work! Better late than never!

This man didn’t need an Oscar to be appreciated, but man am I not so happy for Joaquin. A true genuine soul who knows what loss & hurt is, and you can feel it in his acting. God bless you sir

Joaquin Phoenix is literally the best. He can sing so good, act like a pro, and he’s the only socially awkward actor I can think of which I actually really admire because he’s not really the typical Hollywood personality and I enjoy it

The movie that made me a fan. Years later I’m still a fan, I love the recognition he’s getting because of the joker but it hurts my heart that people forget he’s been THAT MAN since forever. Long live Joaquin, river would be so proud of him.

When Johnny slammed that glass down you know June was like, “damn he’s hot!” Haha

that guy in the front row with the cigarette in his mouth always cracks me the hell up😂
