Yes I was fortunate. Had to stain them. Couldn’t paint over them! It was just too pretty. I plan to do a video on the nuc boxes and will put sone pictures of them when they were new in the video. They were almost too pretty to use. The bees love them! I have some traditional nuc boxes still but just had 20 more of this style made out of plywood and painted them. Will hopefully get that video out soon. Thanks for watching!

I love this video with the nucs , as I’m getting older I’m not a fan of lifting very heavy hives , they are to much for me , nucs are great , I also make my own nucs , easy peazy splits there , the colony was awesome fantastic , hoping you still got your bees and having a great season with your bees . 👍

Thanks. Maybe it will all work out well! No reason it shouldn’t. I checked on the colony that I left in that spot and found queen cells. Need to check on the others ASAP. Excited to see how they do!

Right, 1/3 chance on each to have the original queen, but since you had eggs/brood/larvae in all three, there was no reason to make sure you found her to make the splits!

Yep. It seemed to go well. Looked in the colony that I left in place and it had some queen cells. Haven’t had a chance to check the other two yet. No reason they shouldn’t do well. Thanks for watching and for the comment!

I am in Southeast Alabama. Don’t get discouraged. Keep trying. It is amazing how each colony can be so different. It is one of the most frustrating things about beekeeping but also one of the most fascinating things. Hang in there and thanks for watching!

Most expensive/ valuable nuc ever... Cool video, I still have to do spring splits, hopefully here in Northern Illinois tonight is the last frost. Hopefully..... Bee well.

The lumber was donated back in 2015. It was excess lumber that had been sitting in a waste pile at an old cabinet shop for who knows how long. It was dusty but when I got it all cleaned up I discovered it was mahogany, poplar and pine. So I couldn’t paint them and had to stain them. They have served me well for a few years now. Just had 20 more made out of plywood. They got painted with reject paint from Lowes. I plan to do a video on them one of these days. They work out very well. Everything is interchangeable. Makes life easier. Thanks for checking in!

If you go back & rewatch there were queen cups on the bottom of some frames in the first box you took off.

I don’t think there were any eggs or larvae in them though. Bees will often build those out and never put anything in them. Some hives do it more than others.

You have the option of putting the least populated hive in the original spot to gain bees.

Great idea. That’s kind of what I did. Each hive had lots of bees. I stacked the one I left there up two deep to catch all those bees.

cinder blocks. Unwanted pests. Turn the blocks so the holes are horizontal. That way they won't hold no Critters

Hey Bruce, loved the video. I am going to attempt making my own boxes. Do you have the plans for yours? I have the typical Langstroth measurements but I love the interchangeable boxes that you use.

Interesting video. Always learn something. Bruce, question for you. Can Queen Excluders remove pollen from the workers back legs? Or not?

I’m sure some gets bumped off as they go through but typically I don’t think the is the case. Hadn’t really thought about it. Usually the bees store pollen below the queen excluders. Maybe that’s why?

Your audio is excellent. What is the model mic you are using? What model camera? Looks and sounds great.

I use an iPhone 10XS and a Kimafun 2.4g lavalier wireless mic. I just looked them up on Amazon and it looks like the microphone setup has been updated. I imagine it is even better now. I also bought an adaptor so that I could plug it into my phone.

One more question? Is it necessary to move he splits far away from the old spot in order to keep the bees New split bees from flying back to the old location! Thanks

It is best as the foragers will probably return back to the original hive for the most part. The nurse bees will stay out though so the colonies can succeed even if you don’t move them far away. I prefer to move them if I can. In this case I moved two of the hives away to another location.

So I'm curious, did you care about where the queen was? Is there any issue in shaking bees when maybe the queen could be on one of those frames? I'm a new beekeeper and I'll be doing my first splits this spring.

With a walk away split I don’t worry too much about finding the queen and typically have not had issues shaking frames like this. If she is on one of those frames she will just end up in one of the boxes. The only issue might be if she missed the box but I think she wouldn’t have. The bees pretty much quickly got into the boxes. I could maybe have been a little more careful but wanted to increase the population in those boxes a little bit. I tried to gently shake them but they need a pretty good little shake to be dislodged from the frame. I think we are in good shape. Great question. Thanks for watching and checking in. I hope you have a lot of success with your bees. There are lots of ways to do splits. This one is quick and easy for sure.

I have one colony that I got as a nuc last July. They expanded through summer and fall and I arranged them 7-over-7 in two stacked deep boxes. They look nice and clustered and the boxes are still heavy. If I take a walkaway split this spring, is that likely to disrupt the main hive's honey production this year?

Great question. It may disrupt it a little but if they both explode you could end up with more honey overall. I plan to take some splits from my production colonies as soon as I feel it is safe but will probably just take a couple of frames of brood and a frame or two with sufficient food. Will use nucs for the most part. Will leave a majority of the brood and resources for the bees in the original hive. They will hardly skip a beat, especially if I leave a strong queen in there. So many ways to do things. Will keep posting videos as I move forward. Hope this helps. Just remember that when you do true walk away splits the one without the queen will definitely be stunted for a time because they have to produce a queen and get her mated. So you will lose about a month or a little more. The hive can catch up ultimately but will not be as strong as the other initially, assuming the queen is a good one. I will say however that some of my strongest colonies have come from walk away splits. I mostly plan to do my early splits with queen cells this year. And may introduce some mated queens from different sources as the year progresses. Will just have to see how it goes. My ideas and methods are constantly evolving.

how far away from each other do you have to put the 2 queenless splits? Also, what is the best time of year to do the walkaway split?

I think I took two of these to the farm several miles away but you can actually leave them in the same beeyard. You just have to understand that the foragers will return to the original spot so you have to plan accordingly and make sure there are plenty of nurse bees in all the hives. The best time is during a flow and when you have plenty of drones.

Bruce after splitting up the Nucs how long did you seal up the entrances before opening them?? And also did you move 2 of the splits to a different part of the yard??

I moved two of them to an entirely different location and released the bees right away. I fed all three hives.

Yes you can but you have to remember that the foragers will return to the original spot. The nurse bees will stay with the hive you move. So the one you move away should be a bit stronger.

Awesome looking NUCS Bruce! So how are each of the hives now, did they make a queen and did she return and laying. I have a NUC that is exploding and keeps making queen cells. I just added another deep and moved a couple frames of capped brood up to the deep. I thought about doing a walk away split with the frames I moved up because I cant find her but I have 3-4 day old Larva and pretty sure I seen eggs. Thoughts? Hey thanks for watching. I almost didn’t see this comment. Not sure why I didn’t see a notification. All three hives produced a new queen and they are doing well. The original queen is still just blowing it out. They are back in a three deep nuc and I think I might have oilers another split off but I can’t remember for sure. I did a follow up video a few weeks after the split to show one of the new queens from the walk away split. SUCCESS!!! UPDATE - 1 to 3 Walk Away SPLIT of Honey Bee Hive kzread.info/dash/bejne/k6GKxrKDfMbUh6Q.html However in your case there is another technique I might use. I explain it in the following video. It works both with nucs and really any sizes hive. It is actually my favorite way to do a split. Rather than obtain a mated queen though you could just make sure there is a cell in the queenless colony. BEEKEEPING - SPLITTING BEEHIVES the QUICK & EASY Way kzread.info/dash/bejne/o6p1lLmuXcK4nrA.html If there are at least two different frames with cells a walk away split would actually probably be just about as good though because the time frame to a new laying queen would be about the same. Yes probably so. Would be a good time to cut out some cells if you have other hives to put some in. The bees seem to work it out pretty good if you leave them alone though but theoretically I guess you couple destroy some of them. I plan to just leave these alone and see how they do. Great question!

Yes they are very handy and I love them. I got the idea from Ralph Jones III. I need to do a video on them. Just had some made. I don’t have a specific pattern but will try to get something out soon.

is there a greater benefit to using a 5 frame box rather than a 9 or 10 frame box? In your opinion what is the best way to go?

A majority of my hives are in 10 frame equipment but I use nucs a lot for swarms , splits and weak colonies that I am trying to nurse along. At times I will stack them up if it’s more more convenient or I don’t have any 10 frame equipment with me and they need space. I really like nucs. Bees just explode in them but they can get overcrowded fast.

So you had no queen cells when you made this split ? How late in the season can you do a walkaway split?

No queen cells if I remember right. This was in the spring. I wouldn’t do one much later than May here in Alabama probably because it takes awhile for the bees to build back up. Though it is summer now winter will be here soon. I am planning on doing my last round of splits this coming weekend but will use mated queens.

I would say so. If you are still seeing drones then a new queen can get mated. But things are different in different areas so I would talk to someone out there and see what they think.

Keep plugging. I originally set up my channel back in 2014 when I injured my finger and did a few videos after that but really got serious a few weeks ago. When I figured out how to use iMovie it was a game changer for me. Pretty much do all my video taping and editing on my iPhone. Quite a learning curve for sure and I am still learning. A local guy that worked where I work is now full time you tube. He is amazing and inspired me to try and up my game. I don’t really know him but have tried to use his stuff as a little bit of a guide. You should check him out at lojofishing Keep working at it!

Good tip! I've been using my GoPro the entire time and a 3+ at that. I'll have to look into the iMovie part; never considered that before. I've been on the fence about getting a mic since the bees drown me out so easily these days.

I had a friend recommend I get a wireless mic awhile back. Game changer. You can hear the bees but they don’t drown me out. The GoPro might be better. I am just not familiar with them and how they work. I may go that route in the future.

For those of us learning about bees…with very basic knowledge…it would be nice to see a ‘beginners’ video. This is interesting but I really don’t know what all I’m looking at with the quick flash at the camera. I do know there is a decline in bees and loss due to pesticides that take years to degrade in nature putting a lot of bees on endangered lists. Thank you for passing on your knowledge of bees.

Most of the time I at least wear a veil and usually a jacket. I just feel more confident and don’t see any sense in not wearing if more comfortable that way. Occasionally I will peek into some hives without anything. Just depends...

Couldn't you have just left the weaker hive there and moved the other ones?

That’s pretty much what I did though I think they all ended up pretty much equal in strength. The one left in the original spot probably ended up with more population simply because of the field bees but they were all packed with a lot of bees and everything needed to survive. You moved the frames to quickly in front of the camera. I was interested in seeing what you were talking about but couldn't cause it kept moving and gone quickly. Maybe to experienced beekeeper that's ok, but I'm new.
