Kamon Reynolds - Tennessee's Bees I’m sorry I ask so many questions but have you ever seen a colony follow the queen into another hive? I asked the Facebook page but don’t think anyone understood the question. I did a split and was afraid the parent queen made it into the new split, but the split showed all signs of being queenless, they accepted a new queen but 12 hours later their population exploded... maybe a lot of hatching brood but seems unlikely to me

PS: those splits were very thoughtful of you, Kamon...now just walk away.

I was going to do a walk away split by taking a frame of brood. Then shake off nurse bees from two other frames. Then replace the frame of brood with an empty drawn frame in hopes after three days the queen would have laid it up with eggs then I'd take it out and put it into the new split and let the bees make themselves a new queen. All plans seem good on paper. Went to the hive today to find that I have no queen and they are in the process of making a new queen. I've had nothing but problems with these two packages all year and I will never buy another package of bees ever again. Two packages have replaced their queens four times this year!

I couldn't find the follow up video. I was looking for what to do and look for next.

Hey Kamon, have you ever tried spraying your hands lightly with Honey Bee Gone to see if it keeps bees from crawling on and stinging your hands? Please let me know. I'm trying new ways for gloves other than those cumbersome bee gloves. Thanks.

Thanks you. We only use swarm traps during March thru June here. We don't really have alot of time to spend on it though.

I love it when you make Laurel giggle :) Okay, splits and such... You mentioned that the split takes off much better if you introduce a mated queen. I've also watched some of your videos about queen grafting/raising (good stuff there.) What I don't get is...where do you keep all these queens while you're waiting to stick them into a split? Aren't they already laying eggs in a nuc somewhere, building their own colonies?

Normally when I do this I add a frame of food and a frame of capped brood to help put the odds in the walk aways favour over the 45 days. Is there a reason you do a single frame like this ?

First wanted to say that I love your videos. Second. I’m a new bee keeper just acquired 2 Nucs in June. 1 of my Nucs was a newer, less established with new queen and all. That Colony is about 10 or more frames now with a lot of brood. My problem is they keep trying to supersede her. Should I let them? The queen appears to be performing well and is laying a lot of eggs. Any tips or information would be greatly appreciated

This is good content but I feel like it'd be wise to give a very strong disclaimer to beginners here that splits this late are a very high risk and likely very high maintenance to get in shape for winter.

Maybe. I suppose if you're into feeding bees. I was forced to split a hive that'd just swarmed last Sunday a week ago. Single deep. I split it three ways into a queen castle that's set up for 3 three-frames. The extra frame of bees went into a weak nuc. Roll the dice. By the time them queens are mated we have a fall flow. It's always a gamble with bees. Beekeeping is like Vegas with stinging insects.

True, but if the queen comes back we will be adding and shaking 2-3 frames worth of bees in there minimum. I don't think it is a good idea to give them that many bees until we know they have a queen and after they do we will beef them up.

@@kamonreynolds Fall flows here are pretty unreliable. Sometimes they are great and sometimes they suck. In most cases I don't fee like walkaways are a very wise choice for most beginners to try splits this late here at least. Moth and SHB are peaking, predator numbers are stupid high, fall flows are unreliable and most beginners don't have the resources in bees, brood or feed to risk it, let alone experience. Not complaining, I'm just saying it's probably a subject that deserves more than a rushed, short video that may give some beginners a false sense of security to start late walk aways before they realize the possible needs and issues.

@@kamonreynolds Thanks Kamon, I was just hoping any beginners might read these comments and wait for follow up vids before they jumped the gun and went ahead with a walk away like this without all the info. I don't disagree with anything you did here, walk aways are super useful to know how to do and I agree with how you're going about it here and you did say in the vid you don't like them and why....just that many beginners really need it stated in bold and underlined, lol. I was the same way when I started.

I thought it was 30 days and there should be eggs. I checked after 32 days and didn't not find eggs, larvae, or queen. After 35 days I introduced a queen this Saturday. Was I early.

Day 16-ish the queen emerges. Theoretically on day 22 she mates. To really figure out what's going on with your queen requires a calendar with an accurate "day" for day one etc AND a weather log for around day 22. If it rained for a week starting on day 20 for instance...

@@Mackabees virgins run. They scamper around right over other bees. For about a month after mating they're masters at keeping on the other side of a frame from your eyes. It gets easier. Don't give up.

how far away did you take the split

Did a walkaway split today on 2 hives. First one no problem but the second one when I started to close the hive up they became very aggressive. It been 3 hours and they are still being aggressive. If I get with 50 ft. of the hive I will have 15-25 bees in my face screen. What do you think might be causing the aggression?

How will they make a queen without any protein in the split? Was there beebread on the frame of eggs?

Great videos always enjoy them. Also, where do you get your EZ Nucs from?

Kamon, I would argue you are not doing a walk away split. The focus of the thoughtfulness of the donor colony management really overshadowed the thoughtfulness of selecting the right age brood. The idea of making a swarm box with a frame of eggs just starting to hatch is a great queen rearing method for a beginner. But selecting the right frame and culling 2-3 day old larvae is a skill beginners probably missed from this video.

Dammm, your beehives are packed, that's great. I never seen a beehive like yours. Most of the beehives I see in KZread are not even close to as many bees as your hives have. Is there a secret? By the way, what does your wife put in the patties that you feed the bees?
