S. Janaki and Chitra won national award for the same song in different language "Inji idupalagi" from Thevar Magan (tamil) and Virasat (hindi), this would be great to compare....All the singers are legends in their own way

P Susheela, S Janaki, K S Chitra ..... jewels from Southern Part of India (like many, they too are multi-lingual singers) Minsara Kanavu is the Movie you should check out (Both male and female singers won national award for their tracks) and it features Prabhu Deva as both actor and dancer.

K J Yesudas would have had mny more national awards. There was some controversial response by him saying awards do not matter to him much or something. After that, he wasn't named for a long time, you can see the gap between awards, during when there were actually so many of his masterpieces

Shreya Ghoshal won the National Award in 2009 for two different songs in two different languages (Jao Pakhi bolo- Bengali and Jeev Rangla- Marathi) Since you've already reacted to Jao Pakhi, I would highly suggest you jeev rangla from Jogwa by Ajay-Atul. It is so beautifully arranged and sung!

Need to keep in mind that by the time these awards had started, many singers were already in their mid 30’s or 40’s. So it’s logical that older singers have less number of awards. Also it was Lata Mangeshkar who made them start giving awards to the singers otherwise singers were not on the list of awards.

SPB is a great singer, no doubt. But he is more like a mimicry artist in singing. He imitates many actors voice through his singing style. That never means he is the best singer that India has ever seen.There are many talented and versetile singers in our country.

The thing is, mostly, these people would sing the entire song in one go without any retakes. Otherwise, people like S.P. Balasubrahmanyam and P. Susheela wouldn't have sung more than 40,000 songs in multiple songs for which they hold Guinness records too.

You can notice the majority of singers are from South only because South Indian languages whether you talk about Malyalam, Tamil, Telugu and kannada are ancient languages which have deep classical touch to it. We indians love classics whether it's dance, acting or singing. As you can see in the video mostly people were engaged in classical dance and drama.

Just as you were not aware of Indian music few years ago - now you are in that stage for South Indian singers (did not know any top except KS Chitra and a little bit of KJ Yesudas). The trio of S Janaki, SPB and Ilaiyaraaja (composer) ruled the south film industry for decades.

Susheela is most underrated, we heard all these great singers voice before going to school in radio some songs gives us tense, bevause that somg is last song on radio while we are walking and heard from someone house. We run. What an amazing era of singers we have as childhood.

Another ❤ for identifying Shreya Ghoshal's Bengali song. BTW she is a Bengali actually.

Not to take anything from any other singer but Lata ji (maa) was a star name even before these awards were established (1967) ; they ( Lata Ji and Asha ji ) also publicly stated that they won’t accept awards ; she was the only playback and the second vocalist till date to be awarded the highest civilian honour - Bharat Ratna

Cheak her 2 song from 2003 Jadu hai nasha hai Aye meri zindagi She sound magical in these 2 song. She was very young in that time.

A gentle to reply to many friends who comment about SPB being not trained in classical music, S Janaki being not trained etc - 1. Many singers, particularly these two, are talented to that extend that they have the ability to reproduce any tune, at any pitch the way the particular composer wants it. This ability does not require classical music training. 2. Singers like Yesudas, Chithra etc are trained. They have the advantage of performing classical music easily. For e.g. if SPB cannot wake up from bed and sing any keerthana that is demanded, because he might have to learn it first, whereas Yesudas probably knows all the Keerthanas from his teens and can sing it without a learning session. Thats the only difference 3. My point is - not being trained and winning awards does not add much to its greatness. They are awarded for their performance with that song, not because they were or were not trained. RIP SPB
