Waldgeist beats Enable in the 2019 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe

Спорт

Enable had to make do with the runner-up spot in her bid for history and a third victory in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe as Waldgeist provided Andre Fabre with a record eighth success.
Having stretched her Group One tally to 10 with victories in the Coral-Eclipse, the King George and the Yorkshire Oaks this season, all eyes were on John Gosden’s brilliant mare as she aimed to become the first three-time winner of Europe’s premier middle-distance contest.
Frankie Dettori had to niggle the 4-6 favourite along during the early stages, but she was back on the bridle at the top of the home straight and looked well positioned to race into the record books.
Once asked to quicken, Enable did manage to pull clear - and the packed grandstands in Paris roared in expectation.
However, her stride began to shorten in the final furlong on the testing ground and she was unable to resist the fast-finishing 16-1 shot Waldgeist - fourth in last year’s renewal and beaten by Enable on each of the three previous occasions they had met.
Fabre said: “I always hope for the very best when I run my horses in the Arc, which of course is a very special race for me. With Waldgeist, he carried by highest expectation.
“I knew the ground would be very testing, but I look back to his days as a two-year-old, when he won in the heavy, and that made me more confident that he would finish his race off well.
“I don’t know whether he will run again this year and I will talk to the owner about that.”
He added: “I’m very proud that Waldgeist managed to beat such a fantastic mare, it’s well deserved in some ways. What can I say? I’m delighted.”
Both Gosden and Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager for Enable’s owner Khalid Abdullah, declined to confirm the mare’s anticipated immediate retirement.
Grimthorpe said: “We’ve always said Prince Khalid will make the decisions.
“Whatever happened it (decision on future) wasn’t going to be in a hurry, and I think we will get her back (and see). Prince Khalid will want to reflect on all the various possibilities, give it some good thought - and hopefully we’ll come up with a good answer.
“How can we complain? She’s been the most fantastic filly. Prince Khalid has just enjoyed every moment of her. It was not what we all wanted obviously but in the end we have to accept these things in racing.
“We don’t love her any less.”
Dettori felt the ground had taken its toll on Enable in the closing stages.
He said: “The ground was very sticky and I struggled in the first bit of the race. I let her find her feet and she came good to me in the false straight. I waited for the 300 metres (marker), but didn’t find as much as I thought.
“She just folded a bit and the winner was too good for me today, but my filly was already tired. I passed the 200 (metre pole) and I was a spent force then.
“I think ground had a lot to do with it.”
Gosden said: “She ran a great race - she just got outstayed on the ground. She’s run a lovely race and I couldn’t be more pleased with her.
“Waldgeist handled the ground and outstayed her in very testing conditions. He’s a fine horse, trained by Andre and owned by a good friend of mine.
“We’d have preferred quicker ground.”

Waldgeist has threatened this sort of performance for a while now, he’s a top horse. The ground was definitely the deciding factor, but fair play to Enable & her connections, she’s a champion & a great racehorse. John Gosden must take a lot of credit for doing a wonderful job too, superb trainer.

This is what happens when you consistently take on the best of the best, in any conditions, no backing down or out. John Gosden walked the course today and knew they had their 'most potent weapon' (her turn of foot) swept from under them before the race. Did she still run? You're damn right she did. Enable doesn't back away. They didn't have to run in that ground but did, and still beat the rest of that monster field on pure heart alone. Any lesser horse than her would've dropped like a fly off that pace! She's an absolute legend. The Queen.

@MaryJo have to say I'm not convinced about his turn of foot comment. I've been to most of Enables races in person and I'm a big fan, but mainly due to her high cruising speed and then willingness to forge clear. Wouldn't have said it's a turn of foot as such. Also shes won some big races on soft ground. Not sure whether it was the track, she did practically the very same race last year and did the very same thing. It is hard to get home at Longchamp and I'm not a big fan of the course. I'd say Battash did lose his turn of foot advantage on that ground, asked to quicken and finished last etc. Either way, very unsatisfactory day of results IMO

@TheFallsCapone Enable's grandsire is Galileo who is Frankel's sire. A foal by either of those would be too closely inbred. Sea the Stars? Maybe. Or perhaps they'll wait for Stradivarius to retire to stud and use him at some point. He's by Sea the Stars. That said, it would mean that that foal would be inbred to Sadlers Wells 3 times. It's not that simple.

Enable had previously beaten Waldgeist three times. Today, it was the ground that did it, not a better horse. When will we see Waldgeist run again, maybe the king George ? its unlikely Waldgeist be seen again in England. the focus is only on the Arc. Me and Dad took anti post 12/1 and thought that it was great value then seen it drift to 20/1 the day before urgh ending 16/1 before the start. Once Enable hit the front I thought ah well Enable will have it again then Waldgeist moves up a gear catches Enable and leaves her. WOW what a win but no taking away from the most loved horse Enable

I was at Longchamp today. The argument that the state of the track was the reason for Enable's loss doesn't hold water. (Excuse the purposeful pun.) Check out all the race times today and check the average time for these distances at this track. Nothing out of the ordinary for a slow track. (It certainly was not a heavy track.) 18 out of the last 46 Arc's have been won in slower time than today. So why did Enable lose to Waldgeist today? Frankie Dettori went too early. He should not have panIcked at the 450 metre mark. See 02:07 in the video. It was not his best ride to say the least. John Gosden's expression on the way back to the mounting yard as he was talking to FD was quizzical. P.S. I won on the race, as I backed Enable with Sottsass in a Couplé placé, so I am not talking through my hat.

Agreed. Enable has also won on very soft ground before. I love Frankie but I think the pressure affected him today. Being on a 4/6 shot who races prominently and everyone thinks you should win will make you "play it safe." Enable has a high cruising speed and so he should have hung on longer IMO. Easier said than done when you have Sottsass and Japan snapping away, but he needed to be ballsy

If Enable had Japan's run or Waldgeists run I think she probably would have won. She'd worked too hard from the 1800 to the 500m point I reckon.

When she comes back next year they need to run her. Don't wrap her in cotton wool. Put her in all the big races. The winning streak is broken, don't have to worry if she loses one or two. She was at her best at 3 when she ran seven times from April to October. Interestingly that's the same period as Waldgeist this year. She loves racing, let her do it more often. The Arc needs to be her 6th race of the year.

trent redding Mate, the best horses in Europe are never going to run in Australia. Your races are meaningless to us. It's second tier racing in international terms. The only horses who will go out there are the ones who can't win a big race here. You really do think your races are more important than they actually are. Even this year with Winx not there OBrien only sent a horse who had run a few group one placings. Enable races against the 2nd 3rd 4th best horses in the world. Are you suggesting she should go out to Australia to run against the 20th and 30th best horses? To take on the likes of Avilius or Black Heart Bart?

Waldgeist loves that ground and he found better ground down the middle than enable did on the rail. She ran out of steam in the last 50m because of racing too close to the pace and the ground having too much give. The race played out in the winners favour, doesn’t make the winner a better horse and it doesn’t make Enable overhyped.

Initially thought Frankie went too early but he didn’t move until the 400m, just ran out of gas due to a combo of ground and pace. You can’t really condition a horse for those circumstances without compromising a turn of foot. In hindsight you would hold her together until the 300m. The winner is very exposed so I think Enable goes down as a champion but not quite an all time great.

i backed billesden brook ew at 16/1in the sun chariot at newmarket the day before & waldgeist ew, also 16/1, in the arc; unfortunately, i didn't do the double. billesden brook beat laurens in the 1000 guineas last year at newmarket, while waldgeist was closing in on enable & crystal ocean at the end of the king george & had been a close 4th in the arc last year. it begs the question, why were the 2 form horses such ridiculous odds? ps, i didn't expect either to win but i thought they were both nailed on to be placed. moral of the story, don't be swayed by the odds.

The latest penetrometer reading is 5.12. That will drop to under 5.0 with the fine weather, depending upon watering strategy. They have some great managers looking after Royal Randwick these days, so it will be in terrific order. I agree that the race record is within reach: 1m 8.36s, Redzel. Not sure about Santa Ana Lane's 1m 7.45 (29 September 2018) track record, when the morning penetrometer was 5.06 and the track a Good 3. It's possible.

@keith gould Agreed, Keith. I remember how deflated I felt when Octagonal and Lonhro were beaten at their last appearances. I still have the Big O poster on my wall that was part of the entry price. Walgeist got within 2 lens of the great mare in three of the times they met previously, and appears to have gained in strength. There are some pretty handy middle distance horses in the beaten brigade, so its conceivable that he will be elevated to the number one ranking by the IFHR, or at least equal to Enable. This is the current , with Benbatl likely to get 126: 1 128 Enable (GB) 3 126 Ghaiyyath (IRE) 8 124 Waldgeist (GB) 13 122 Japan (GB) 13 122 Magical (IRE)

@keith gould Let face it, on Tulloch, Tommy Smith treated his horses as cattle and raced them very hard, over testing distances. Can you imagine the record Kingston Town would have accumulated if Chris Waller trained him as he did Winx. The King ran in sprints to two milers at three, 15 starts, 9 G1s (6 wins). Apparently Tommy used a high grain diet that made horses leaner, but created ulcerations. The King eventually broke down. I bet if Chris had him, the horse, being a gelding would have raced a few extra seasons.

@keith gould To be honest, Keith, I'm not miffed with what Brits think about our great horses. I have been a student of our racing since 1960, when the old man took me to see the likes of Todman, Tulloch and Wenona Girl. A pretty good start! When you follow the races for that long, week in and week out, you internalise the benchmarks and appreciate greatness when it comes along. I am sure that Winx would have beaten anything in the World up to 10f. Sure, times can be deceptive. Look at Novellist's astonishing King George win, for example. But Highland Chieftain, Vadamos and now Benbatl, who were dominated by her, provide a direct measure against the elite in the UK. As for BC, horses like Ortensia and Buffering won international G1s, and BC destroyed them. Have another look at her Newmarket Hcp win. She was like another species as she tore away from that field. Only Vain ever dominated a G1 sprint field like that, and she was top weight!

  • @svendbosanvovski4241

@keith gould Vain's win in the Craven Stakes remains the most astonishing win I have ever seen. 12 lens in a canter, 1m 9.8 on a slow track. And of course he won what are now 3 G1s in 8 days. They run quicker times today for a number of reason - cambered tracks and advanced soil science, jockeys ride with shorter stirrups and reduce the effect of drag and the horse equipment is lighter. The greatest for me: Tulloch, Kingston Town, Winx. Sprinters - Black Caviar and Vain; milers- Lonhro, Winx; middle distance to two miles, Galilee, Might and Power, Makybe Diva. Jumper - Crisp. In their day, they would have beaten anything in the world on turf.

I don't agree that Enable was burnt out because of staying up with the pace, the front 3 stretched and Dettori was happy to sit back a few lengths in 4th before making his move. I'm afraid they were just beaten by a better horsee on the day. It doesn't make Enable any less of a brilliant horse. The tactics for the 2020 Arc could be very different as Ghaiyaath likes to make it from the front and is a miles better horse this year. Love shouldn't be forgotten either, it should be a cracking Arc this year.

Volatile and declining exchange rates, in the long term, are associated with weak and unsuccessful governments. And it’s hard to admit, but that’s the way the world sees us now; with three prime ministers in the past four years, we look uncomfortably like pre-Berlusconi Italy... ... We might have a bit of a political worry if and when we go below parity with the euro, and then another one with the US dollar, but there will never be a moment when the argument that “devaluation is good for the economy” will be decisively refuted. We’ll just look back in 50 years, and remember that there was a time when we used to compare our output and living standards to Germany and France, not Italy and Spain.

@@xWayne1991x 2 points. Firstly I'm not saying she should have been held up (that would make no sense at all) but she should have been held onto. She was travelling well 2f out on dreadful ground and if he'd held on longer then the burst would have been decisive. Same thing happened last year, went too early and was very lucky to win in the end. And secondly it's all about the pressure. If Frankie was riding a 20/1 there is no pressure, you ride exactly how you want and no-one will say anything. If you're on a 4/6 shot going for history you have to ride a safe race, in this case, sitting handy and kicking early. If you cast your mind back to Frankels last race, the stakes were similar, on terrible ground and after a slow start yet he sat still and held his nerve until 1f out so the move was decisive . If he's had been mowing away 2f out he'd have got beat that day too

In her 3YO season alone she garnered wins in the Cheshire Oaks, Investec Oaks, Irish Oaks, King George, Yorkshire Oaks and in the Arc. Call me cynical, but I've followed the sport long enough to know most trainers and owners, I would actually guess 8 or 9 out of 10, would've looked at that as a career in one season and sent her right off to broodmare without even remotely considering a second full season on the racetrack, much less a third, and now she's even into her fourth. Anything Gosden and Prince Khalid get out of this mare now is pure window dressing. The way she ran through major G1 races as a 3YO reminded a bit of Sea The Stars in 2009, and they didn't hesitate a second to send him off to a glorious stud career the minute he crossed the finish line at Longchamp as the 09' Arc winner.

I had Waldgeist $5 WP pa $78.50, Enable to win in a contest, Magical 2nd or 3rd, too many with Japan & Sottsass in Quinella didn’t pay $21 pd $7.80 🤷🏽‍♂️ fun tho & eye 👁 Fabre / Boudot top Tnr / Jky by far at course @ racingtv.com/racecourses/longchamp 12 mths

Sad to see Enable lose. The way he wins reminds me of Montjeu passed El Condor Pasa n Solemnia passed Orfevre. I guess French-based horses always hav a home-field advantage. Dunno if Waldgeist would be another one hit wonder or he could carry this to his next runs.

Doesn't lessen Enable's reputation one bit. She's run everywhere, including the BC in the states - which many are afraid to do, including Frankel, and taken on all comers all over the globe. I have more respect for a horse that loses a race or two because it's travelled all over, than an undefeated horse that stays at home, afraid to ruin an undefeated record. ALL HAIL ENABLE.

Enable wins group ones in Ireland, England, France and USA. Winx wouldn't of run a place in an Arc, far too hard for her. The Arc is very different than going around week after week against the same bunch of tired easy beats that Winx did.

@@estenski I tend to disagree especially with the turn of foot winx possesses. Just have a look at sectionals and who is the faster horse. Yes, Enable has won the better and harder races but winx winning 28 in a row or whatever it was surely tells you the longevity of a horse and how good the horse is albeit the lesser opposition

Tarik Alibasic Winx never had to run against more than one half decent horse in any of her races. She never had to contend with five other very good horses in a race. Enable was beaten fair and square here but she virtually ran three races. First she took the field up to the front three and beat off genuine chances in Magical and the Godolphin horse, then she beat off the challenge of the two three year olds and then she had to try and win the third race against the late closer out wide and she couldn't manage that. Winx was never under pressure like that from multiple quality opponents in one single race. Bowman could screw up and she'd still win because most of the time the whole field was rubbish or she really only had to focus on beating a single opponent who was anywhere close to halfway decent.
