This was one of the rare films I saw as a kid where the film didn't talk down to children. It treated children with intelligence.

This movie is about how a horse saved a boy and the incredible relationship they built. If you have not had the incredible experience of trusting a horse and of them trusting you, well, you will not understand. This boy owed the horse his life and vice versa. Such a beautiful story about the bond between a person and a horse.

And from what I understand, every modern breed of horse has arabian blood in them. The Arabian horse, I like the larger boned Polish breed mostly, are a fantastic breed of horse! You're right too... this movie on the big screen is phenomenal! Secretariat and Seabiscuit are 2 others worth noting... as racing achievements at the least... imho amongst millions...lol But, imho there IS a great comparison of LOVE to this... absolutely wonderful, COMPLETE and PURE LOVE... LIFE SAVING INDEED.

I always tear up during this scene. When Alec and Black are so in sync with each other you forget they'd are on the race track with many spectators yelling in the background. Then the music plays and all the emotions felt throughout the movie are brought up all at once and I tear up but also smile at how powerful the bond of a human and animal can be. Alec saved Black and black saved and even healed Alec. ♥️🐎🐎

Only American Zoetrope could create such intimate beauty. The power and speed, the connection between horse and human. Turning the sheer spectacle of a match race into a poignant and private moment. The crowd silenced in the moment, with only the sound of hoof beat and panting. The POV showing the come from behind miracle. Bringing the ethereal music in only at the end to connect us with the island that brings the story full circle. No other film about any horse - even Secretariat and Seabiscuit - can match it. What grace and majesty.

I watch this scene whenever I want a spiritual lift. It brings me to tears of joy every time. Everything about it is magnificent -- the sounds of the hooves on the ground, the leather, the panting, the jockeys seemingly airborne on the backs of the horses, and the fact that the black stallion says: "Don't stop me! I am GOING FOR IT! And I WILL WIN!" And then the kid bends into him: "WE WILL WIN!" The incredible inter-species communication between them is so eloquently displayed here. I am sure every jockey and horseperson lives for these moments of perfect union.

I've watched the movie a number of times with my daughters (who are now 30 & 32) and it was just so inspiring. My oldest loves horses, but we could only afford the Breyers miniatures:) My sister had a Appaloosa that was a retired race horse and one day she said for me to take her out. I rode her bare back and after a few hundred yards of trotting, I gave her the click click sound and said "lets go"...fark, she shot off like a rocket. I hung on for dear life and have to say that when a horse if running full out, it's butter smooth.God what a ride with eyes watering from the speed and I have a death grip on her mane. Galloped her back (we went about a mile) and I could barely walk since my legs were shaking after that ride. I love my motorcycles, but a fast horse at full speed is scary exciting.

This is such a beautiful film; this is such an emotionally powerful film, for kids (whether they love horses or not), and for parents. There is barely any dialogue in this film except for a few key scenes, which is remarkable to think about as most kids' films, even in the early 80s when this film came out, are filled to the brim with noises, loud dialogue, and explosions. This film is a work of poetry, and it still stands up beautifully after 35+ years. The kid actor (now a man who owns a trucking company) is also an incredible rider for his age. He did ALL of the riding in this film, except for some brief shots using a stunt double in the final race (obvious as you can't see Alex's face and the double is slightly bigger). But Alek did most of it -- including the final race. Amazing.

You can see after he throws his helmet and goggles off, the boy and his horse get in sync. It's almost like a train and you can hear how in tune they are. He won the triple crown in 1973 and to this day a lot of his records haven't been beat. Including the biggest lead a no win in history. He win the Preakness, I think it was, by 32 lengths.

favorite scene of the entire movie; definitely displayed the bond between Alec and Shetan (The Black) and coming from behind to win it all due to the bond and faith in each other; this movie is tied for my all time favorite horse movie alongside The Rogue Stallion, a movie that also displays a tight bond that develops between a wild horse and a child (though a teenager in The Rogue Stallion)

i remember watching this as a kid, I was an undiagnosed HF autistic, didn't really understand alot of the dialogue in the film, I was young just a tiny gaffer the first time i saw this, but for the lion's share of it, I didn't need to understand the words, the horse, the kid, the body language, the music, it did all the talking, looking back at it through memory it somehow feels like remembering a fever dream, only there's no words, just sound, music, and a story i could understand without a word needing to be spoken.
