We don't ask if the customer wants the bill/cheque because it makes it seem like you're saying "Are you going to fuck off now". Over the top British politeness getting in the way of convenience? Yes, that's right. I like it that way.

Tips are the reason Europeans find US service so intrusive. All that fake sincerity and constant interruptions. For us good service is discreet. We want staff there when we want them, not constantly coming over.

@@thedancinggymnast4639 to be honest, while the service is mostly fake, many Americans will just say that to strangers because it is just the norm. It's normal to be friendly, others see it as strange, but most genuinely act that way.

I hate the concept of tipping. The full price of the meal should absolutely include a decent living wage for the staff. You don't tip other places, where you also get serviced by the staff, why should we have to do that in restaurants? Thankfully tipping isn't really that common in my country.

Same here. I was planning to spend 5-6 hours in a Denny's one night because I didn't have a place to sleep (long story) and the server kept asking if I wanted anything else and at some point asked if I wanted the check or the menu. The place was empty except like 3 other tables so it wasn't like I was hogging up space. I had to find somewhere else to spend the night. I ended up sleeping instead of looking at my phone all night so I guess that ended nicely.

Several times, someone asks me for a margarita, even though they have just been seated and I say "Your waitress/waiter will be right with you," insinuating that I am not the person you ask. Even if they don't hear this, they should be able to tell from the braces that I am a smol bean and stay far away from the adult juice.

Doesn't matter if it's fast food or fine dining - if you sit at a table to eat, it's a restaurant. If you get your food in a bag and take it away, it's a takeaway.

I prefer the English way. I also hate when people ask me what I'm looking for - SO MUCH! When we were on holidays in London, we always tipped but people often got confused by that and didn't know what we wanted 😂 Because in Austria when it's like 10,50€, you just say "12€" but in London apparently that's different? Because most people didn't know what we meant by that.

Are you kidding? As a Canadian, I'm so offended. I always tip. I tip where ever I am able. I've tipped since I was old enough to pay for my own food. I almost walked out of a family dinner at Swiss Chalet because my father was upset that they kept checking on us and threatened to not leave a tip. Went on a class trip to NYC when I was about 16. A group of the students went out to dinner at a decent resteraunt because we wanted a real sit down meal and we probably tipped like 25% because we couldn't agree on how much was enough plus all your bills look the same.

I was mortified the entire time. There were issues with the order in which the food came out and then at the end two of them had a problem with the gratuity and so they demanded to have everyone have seperate bills and they refused the gratuity, I paid it and a few others paid it but the two who didn't pay just made problems the entire trip.

In Germany we always tip. You don't need to tip but you just do it because it's polite. It's like an addition if they work well and are polite

I would just like to say that I live in Canada, in Québec, and not tiping is the rudest thing you can do and literally everyone gives at least 15% in tips, even 20% in some cases. Personally, if the waiter is friendly I'll immediatly give 20% and 25% if they are really great. In all honesty, I can not imagine any canadian who is not having a really crappy day and isn't a shity human not tiping.

About 14 years ago I worked in burger king for the summer after my final year of mandatory school and had to clean a used sanitary towel that was stuck to the bottom of a table. I was horrified that someone would actually do that... I'm not even going to start on the toilet stories.

Evan, I feel your pain! I worked in the UK for a large American Pizza chain (who also served pepsi 😉 and had a hut shaped building...) and the girls toilets were grim, the men's never were. Often groups of teenage girls would hide alcohol in the toilets and go in there to drink it, my manager used to make me go and remove it, to be handed back when they leave. But, there was often poo on the toilet seats and sometimes cubicle walls or floor. I actually met my now wife when working there, she came in with a friend of mine to eat and the friend ensured that we stayed in touch, to the point that we became a couple! Got a total of seven years service... How I never had a heart attack from all the pizza, I will never understand! This was a great topic for a video!
