Wait for the Desert to Bloom - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon
Friends, today we come to the third Sunday of Advent, and the great image from Isaiah is that of the blooming desert. Many of us pass through desert times, dry periods of trial and training. But perhaps the Lord has drawn us into the desert to awaken a deeper sense of dependence upon him. We must be patient; and in this season of waiting, we look toward Christmas-the great blooming in the desert.

I am in my weekly hour of adoration telling Jesus I cannot believe I am void of joy in the presence of the Savior who is the random of my salvation. At the end of by hour I often listen to Bishop Barron’s sermon. Christ sent this message to me in his suggesting that the desert can be instrumental -even necessary-in my blossoming between the dry spells of life. Praying for all of you who are in the desert at this moment. May this Christmas help you to bloom in joy.

2006 was my time of depression. My son had died, my wife divorced me, and lost my good paying long time job. Today, I look back and realize; I don't miss the job anymore and don't miss that wife (the Church annulled that marriage). I still miss my son. With that I learned - time can be a friend and offers us time to heal. And NOW - Coming Home to Rome. Thanks Be to God.

I am old woman living my desert experience. I look back on a life of poor, sinful choices. I feel I have very little to offer to God for the beautiful life He gave me. I look at my diminishing physical, mental abilities. Yet, there is a quiet river of love, gratitude, and humility which is taking me to the light of Jesus. The hard grasp of life is setting me free and now I can dedicate my life and my prayers to God. My desert is preparing me for my meeting with God when He calls me. I am accepting my desert experience. I am rejoicing in the desert. Thank you Bishop Barron for teaching us.

Dear Bishop Barron Your homily spoke to my heart! It is winter with rain and the temperature is 1 degree! But the spiritual winter has been on. I continue to cling to Jesus. I am student of the deserts and shrub steppe natural environments. I live the Mojave and Great Basin Deserts. My greatest joy is praying morning and evening pray at our home in desert juniper woodland Joshua Tree desert. The smell of the desert during the rains; the beauty of desert in early spring with abundant flora display. The serenity and quietness of being deep in prayer. It is the best of being with Our Lord.

I have been through a period as you describe here Bishop Barron. The turning point for me was when I realized that God had “allowed” me to be in a long desert for a reason and that he would let me out when he was ready (and that did happen!). But it taught me a great lesson of patience and trust. Thank you for your continued great insights into the spiritual life!

Greeting from Thailand. Hello Bishop Barron. I’d like to thank you for making this sermon. It has brought me to tears as your message touches me so deeply. I’ve been going through some unpleasant times that many times I thought of giving up. But the Lord has saved me. I’ve become a Christian and start to follow the Lord’s path. But sometimes life is so hard that I’m still lost and not sure what to do. Now I know. Your sermon has shown me the truth that torn apart illusions and deceits that had been governing my life. Now For the very first time I know who I am and I can truly feel my connection with the Lord. Thank you so much for saving me today Bishop. Thank you.❤

Thank you for reminding us that finding joy requires patient endurance. I live in western Washington. The whole winter is overcast, cold, and drizzly. I find joy in finding blue sky, or seeing the snow covered mountains when we say "the mountains are out." It is mild enough to be kind to wildlife and the birds who over-winter. God blesses us in all times and seasons with great beauty. I have also lived in the desert of Eastern Washington and hiked through snow covered scrub to find a creek and waterfall and small "potholes" that sustain amazingly diverse life. As Gerard Manly Hopkins said, "There lives the dearest freshness deep down things." Your homily has reminded me of all this. Again, thank you!
Bishop, thank you. What a wonderful message at this time when everything seems so chaotic in the world. God bless you!
Bishop Barron has been a great grace bearer for me. Today, the sermon was very inspiring for me. I am on dialysis for two years now and will be for the rest of my life. It is a desert experience for me. I do have moments of discouragement. But God sends His grace through many people. Bishop Barron is one of them. The strength to endure is the Eucharist, My rain in the desert is the Eucharist. Thank you Jesus.

This is astonishing, dear Bishop! Except that in my desert, much has bloomed already, and I wait - but now, taking advice from you, patiently, not anxiously any more - to be lifted out of here to my home with Jesus. For in January the 4th year will begin since my only family went to another distant land. First Covid rules kept them from returning, then job insecurity, and now illness that requires a prolonged treatment in that country. Meanwhile, many falls and post polio syndrome have rendered me crippled in legs and in arms. These cannot be mended. I am old and worn-out by the vicissitudes of life. Life. It has changed utterly. First recognition of what was wrong, then a (spoken) confession pages long in written notes lest I forget, rivers of tears, an outpouring of poems, a changed attitude that has brought calm, insight, and - gift from God - a most loving Hindu caregiver whose idea of Catholics has greatly changed because of my witness, she says. May it be true, for if so it may weigh against the reparation due from me in Purgatory. 🙂 So you see how inspired you have been? This is typed slowly on the PC as keying in on the phone, with torn shoulder tendons, is even more taxing! As for winter rains, in south India we've had such bitter cold and rain for weeks, till even my little cheerful roly-poly caregiver is finally slightly discomposed by it...

My mother gave me the bloom after her terrible bout with not just garden variety depression. She had severe depression, ocd, bi polar, you name it. Incredible woman , immense suffering. Started at 11 years old. Fast forward meets dad , they proceed to have six children in a ten year span all the while battling her illness. Things came to a head , she had a lobotomy, it helped in some sense. My mother was a fighter, courageous and miraculously mothered all of six of us without skipping a beat. Her desert lasted her whole life. The whole time she leaned on Jesus, it was Him that got her through, she always said it. I heard it my whole life, because of her suffering and devotion to Christ I have been able to bloom . She gave me the gift of faith. I’ll never understand how she had the six of us at mass every Sunday , and may I say , dressed properly. The coats and hats and gloves… she was a dynamo , as was dad. She would say , “Anne Marie, one day your faith will mean everything to you.” You’re right mom…..

Realizing that it is the message, not the messenger. Nevertheless, I can't help but think how I always experience Bishop Barron speaking directly to me. This is a gift, imho. And then to elevate this gift to the level of a gift to help us interpret hard times: this empty time, this time of tribulation, should not be read as one when God has abandoned us. Rather it is a preparation for the time of greater contribution. Not within society's definition of celebrity, financial gain, but God's definition. I think of the last sentence in George Elliot's Middlemarch: "... for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs." Small, God-inspired acts toward each other, which our desert's have helped nourished the capacity to give. Thank you, Bishop Barron.

Our Past School Principal at St Bonaventure in Huntington Beach died, and we had her rosary and funeral last night and today. Sr. Carnel was a grace-filled force. At times, when internally, I wanted her to take action, nothing would happen. I would wait and wait, but nothing. I used to refer to it as “Vatican Time.” I learned grace and patience during those times, realizing that things will happen when God wants them to. Sr Carmel had the Grace of a saint and will be missed. Her Live streamed mass and rosary are live-streamed on youtube if you want to hear her bio, and some really funny stories.
