It's funny you should say that. As someone who uses both a smart trainer and trains to power outside, I find maintaining a Z2 power very very difficult outside and have often thought about some kind of power restrictor adapter that works like a drive train brake to limit me from going 'too hard' and busting my Z2 outdoor workout.

I’ve just upgraded to a Kickr Move from a Zwift hub and I’m enjoying the movement. I do like the lockout for sprints but otherwise it adds some interest and comfort when doing 2 hour + rides. I’m restricted to indoor riding for medical reasons so having the comfort will be more important as I train 5 or 6 days a week.

Seems like the lockout would be a good opportunity to be controlled via a blip or something because it'd be pretty tough to use this during a race or lively group ride and have to unclip to lock out to sprint.

shane, regarding the seat levelling. My mate has a kicker 2021 and the arms are not correctly welded to the central bit. meaning it's not level in a way that sounds similar to what you experienced. the AXIS feet easily balance it out (Wahoo said they'd replace it) I had a Tacx with the same type of welding problem myself 7 or 8 years ago. Just check that out to, literally, see if it's made properly!!!! it's obviously not as rare a problem as you might think.

It comes at a bit of premium cost. It'd be great if they sold these at a special introductory price, for a limited time-frame only. If that were the case I'd likely be tempted to trade up. However, with the price as is, I'll opt to wait and maybe in that time-frame some competitor might come up with something as good or better but at a cheaper price. How the market take-up of it fares, as the US and Europe enter their Winter will be interesting to see. Great update and review

I get this as a sort of "all in one" package that would work if someone is new to indoor training or is buying a new trainer anyway, but I'm wondering if a premium rocker plate for one's existing trainer might not be a better choice for most since you'd get motion along both planes. After riding it, how does this motion compare to a full rocker plate?

  • @gplama

Shane - top notch review here. Question - I bought a Move for my son. He does a fair bit of racing. On the first ride he had mixed feelings about the movement and noted that the calibration seemed off. I know this unit auto calibrates. We have 2 other Kickrs of earlier generations. I did some side by side non-scientific testing and sure enough it seemed harder (higher HR) to maintain similar power numbers on the Move vs the old stationary units and 5s top sprint power was about 50 watts higher on the stationary units vs the Move, in both open and closed setting. In essence, assuming the power is accurate, might the movement be stealing watts?

  • @gplama

    @gplama

We need an add-on that captures the direction/turn of the front tire so that that info can move you in the correct direction in relation to the software viewport. Then some developers need to make mods or updates for games that can utilize all this hardware so a rigged bike can be used to play the games.

When sprinting, Shane even makes a comment about "once you get used to it it's not that bad". What am I missing here? I don't think the additional $300 is such a stretch (once you've committed to $1,300) if there's a good reason for it.

I wish that you had spent more time explaining the rationale for incorporating aft movement into the platform. For as long as I have been riding in the real world (some 35 years), my bike has never had the tendency to move backwards whilst riding. I don’t see the point in this feature and, rather, view it as a negative that introduces unrealistic and unwanted oscillation. For me, it certainly is not an incentive to buy the bike. More side-to-side motion or simulation of leaning into turns would have been a preferable inclusion more aligned with what actually occurs out on the road.

The price drop was only on the Kickr Core trainer with all others the same (ignoring the "sale" on the ROLLR). As far as motion, adding it to trainers AND smart bikes makes sense. The comfort and motion issues are the same whether the "bike" is integrated (smart bike) or separate (trainer). Perhaps worse with the smart bike since they are often heavier and more "stable", but if motion is good for that, trainers benefit too. "Motion for All" is what I say :D

Seems like a waste of money I’ll keep my original kickr

Hey, I set up my Kickr move yesterday. During the first test, I noticed a “ Scratching noise”when the trainer moved back and forth. Can you confirm this with your Kickr? Here’s a video: kzread.infoE1pgJ19RhaA?si=c1d5rtWN0lMk--Ok

Do not understand all these gadgets anymore. Started with the (good old) CompuTrainer, over the years various Wahoo's (wheel-on - direct drive), Tacx and even Elite. Since a year C2 BikeErg. More noise yes, but solid and just does the job every day 60 ~120min with TrainerRoad/PerfPro workouts. So no more fancy gimmicks like Climb or Move for me anymore. If I want to move forward I go outside 🤣

Not exactly.... unless you installed it on a set of roller-skates?

Neo had side flex only, which is minimal at best. It took them beyond 3 generations (OG/2/2T) before they offered the Motion Plates that add the most visible and rewarding fore-aft motion. They did beat Wahoo to that by a year, but they were still behind the other DIY and smaller rocker plate makers by several years.

Not gonna be great when your front wheel isn't straight while rocking...

No issues encountered with that.. yet. I guess it'd depend on the flooring and the grip the feet have to stop the unit moving sideways. You'd have to be riding pretty drunk to get it to move much.... I need to test this. 🍻

That thing looks like a horrible ride. Like, what is the point of moving back and fro? My front tire would be squeaking away on my rubber mat! Besides, I gave up on Wahoo two years, and two broken kickr cores ago. Saris has performed flawlessly!!

@@gplama Dont get me wrong, it's a great review! What I mean is, really who worries if 3 power sources shows that one of them is out by 1%? Cooling the room and heating it up while cycling to see if this creates any power differences. I mean, just why?

  • @gplama

Because not doing this level of review is to blindly believe what companies are selling you is as they say, without question. And that's simply advertising. If you're spending $2,000, wouldn't you want some kind of assurance that what you're getting will perform as you expect? And what if that assurance comes for free here on KZread from someone who's done this kind of work for years? That's a pretty good deal if you ask me. Why you'd comment saying it's a waste of time is playing to the manufacturers and letting them get away with making underperforming products. I read a comment the other day that said a lot of reviews of bike tech are "non-critical". That explains a LOT of what you're seeing and why you're seeing it from other reviewers.

They've put bets on all horses. Dropping the CORE to US$599 means they're not just focusing on the 'Porsche' end of the market.

The only thing is, i don’t want my trainer to move! I want a nice sturdy unit and that’s one reason why i like my Wahoo Kickr. I don’t get this, it seems pointless.
