Wahoo ELEMNT ROAM Review: 8 New Things // Hands-on Walkthrough

Спорт

In-depth review: dcra.in/ROAM
Here's everything you need to know about the new features of the Wahoo ELEMNT ROAM, primarily from a navigation standpoint (which, are...well...the only new features). Though I do talk about the new color screen, the ambient light sensor, as well as how the new mapping works - complete with turn by turn directions and route recalculation. I then go hands-on to show what data fields look like, plus things like browsing on the map to route to various locations, and Strava routes. Not to mention trace back and plenty more. Dive in for all the details!

    @@shaneturner4630 Some of us need a bigger display because our sight has gone and wearing glasses and sunglasses is a No no. So it might not suit you, but it suits me. Edge screens as an engineer are difficult to save if dropped. This has been built so if you crash or it gets knocked off it will survive. So nice to have an opinion, but that is all it is.

    I navigated 210 miles across the UK over two days using my Bolt and it was more than enough. My Bolt also tells me street names etc. I actually prefer the monochrome display on the bolt, I hated the colour screen on my Edge 520 which is one reason for parting with it.

    In the absence of actually needing a new device I almost always find myself wondering what the next version may be like. I think with people reportedly waiting longer than ever to replace their smart phones, perhaps the similarly incremental approach in sports technology will eventually force manufacturers to look at introducing more substantial and fully functional features in each new device iteration. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

    Very interesting and great comparison with the other units. I am weighing up the ROAM vs the Edge 1030. As a long term Garmin user (Garmin Connect history and currently Edge 800 and VivoActive etc etc) the Edge 1030 seems to be the right choice. However to buy-in now, as the 1030 has been around for two years it may be that we could see a 1050 in a year or so. What do you think, Is it worth waiting to see what Garmin release, or could it be a long wait?

I love the features that Garmin has like telling you the remaining route distance, remaining elevation on a climb, etc. However, I can't stop seeing people gripe about software issues that plague the Garmin and that's really pushing me away from it and towards Wahoo, but I really want that data among other features. Garmin 530 or Wahoo Roam? I’m coming from a Garmin 820 which has been buggy at times, not as good at navigation as I hoped and after 2.5 yrs use now only has a 4 hour battery life. My 810 before that was less than perfect too. The 530 seems to have cool features but Wahoo has a reputation for being less buggy

    Excellent review. You addressed the screen size early on which I was interested in as going from a water-damaged Bolt (side button flap detached) to std Elemnt was disappointed in gaining a cm or 2 of height and no extra width. Looks like the Roam bezel is better. That said, I like the simplicity of the b&w display and the breadcrumb feature once you get used to it is delightfully simple. I never use turn-by-turn as it takes the fun out of riding. Just become savvy with the breadcrumb. Fearful that the extra map detail will make it less useable/more Garmin-like. Trying to fit too much into too little (not just size, but computing power)

    I'm a Garmin user now, but back when I used to own an ELEMNT, there were two extremely annoying bugs that ultimately contributed to my ditching it. First, the cue sheet did not automatically scroll after a turn. Instead, the distance-to-turn field for that turn continued to count down into negative numbers. To get back in sync with my current location, I had to flip to the map page and then back to the cue sheet. Even then, the results were not ideal. Instead of showing the upcoming turn and the next two turns (which is what I think most users would want), it showed the upcoming turn and the two *previous* turns (turns that I had already made and did not care about anymore). Have these problems been fixed by now?

    Love your reviews! Now there have been a few more updates by wahoo, do you think it has improved its value versus a Garmin Edge 530? Having a wahoo kickr core I've been impressed how much better that device is now than the day I bought it thanks to steady firmware upgrades. Garmin seems to dump and run, never fixing issues before moving on to the next device. I'd like to upgrade to a Roam from a Garmin edge 130, but based on this review is be edge 530 all the way. Has Wahoo improved the roam enough to be a real contender?

    shanmac77 I’ve done this in the past. Trouble is that your phone screen isn’t designed to be on for that long. You have to force it not to dim or turn the screen off.. which means that the battery deteriorates. Even more so if it’s in direct sunlight. You’ll also want to get an anti-glare screen. Sweaty hands make operating a phone touchscreen quite difficult. So many times I struggled to unlock my phone after it locked during a big effort, i.e. exactly when you want data. If you’re in a crash, the last place you want your phone to be is out front taking the brunt of it. I could go on. These points are all fine if you’re a casual commuter. If you’re doing long distance or high intensity rides, though, a phone just doesn’t cut the mustard.

    I typically use a gimbal when shooting. Ike head units. Or, when not I shoot a bit wider using a GoPro Hero7 Black or my phone, and then I use stabilization software in post to smooth it out (and crop in a bit). Finally, I usually slow the head unit footage to 50%, which reduces the visibility of the movement.

    Marketing, most likely. They commit to a release date/press event well in advance. Things get delayed on the development side, and they ship a product out that might need software updates out of the box. I'd assume there's a solid 30-60 day lead time from manufacturing to delivery to a consumer.

    Having bought a Garmin 820 based on a DCR review, I found features that sounded good were underwhelming and erratic. Basic operation like uploading at end of ride is cranky at best. Grade on ascents is negative at times (ummm). BT link to phone is bad. Overall, PITA device for me. Iv see the first REI review says/said "hey, the darn buttons are erratic". Fun to discuss the fancy pants features, but geez, the buttons should work. I guess I will pass

    Most important question? Can you send GPX file via bluetooth only to the device and use it? Let's say I created GPX from scratch using 3rd party app (e.g. Locus map), will it work? I had elemnt Bolt and even though it has "option" to send gpx to device it did not work. That's why I sold it. How is it with this model?

  • @Dcrainmaker

    @Dcrainmaker

    Yes, you'll send it via the companion app. Just ask the 3rd party app to open it using the Wahoo app and you're off and running.

  • @TheRdrage

    @TheRdrage

    If you want turn by turn, it won't work with gpx files. If you're creating the file, use tcx. and sync it to get the route on the device. The same with the Bolt and the original Elemnt.

  • @ProfessorSteez
    @ProfessorSteez5 жыл бұрын

    I know a lot of people jumping back on the Garmin bandwagon for the new 530, but honestly none of them even need a computer for routing. Leaving GPS out of the discussion, it seems the Elemnt Bolt still wins hands down as far as user interface and the companion app.

    I'm upset this map reroute feature isn't updated to the Bolt. It's a basic, core feature that was missing from the Bolt, not something I should have to upgrade to get. Also still like the smaller form factor of the Bolt.

    @@Dcrainmaker Lezyne did this with their Super GPS when connected to the phone. I left Lezyne for the Elemnt and was surprised that despite doing it all better they did not have the rerouting (via phone) feature. Thanks for your review. I was hot on getting a Roam but it seems to be much less than their marketing told it is. The map should be movable even when in a ride. The points to save should be nameable and should be allowed to save beforehand. Being able to make your own points of interest would be a massive feature for long distance bikers or bikepackers. Imagine the unit giving you a warning for resupply sources or control points etc. nearby the route. I am going to watch a video about the garmin 530 now. The roam does not excite me that much after seeing how it performs at the moment. I´ll probably stick with my Elemnt for now.
