Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt Review | KILLER Battery Life + Super Easy to Use
Спорт
While Wahoo claims its new Elemnt Bolt GPS computer and sculpted mount are aerodynamically superior to the comparably sized Garmin Edge 520 and 820 with their respective mounts, the real selling points for us are the Bolt's easy-but-robust functionality, compact size, killer battery life (triple the Edge computers when using navigation, in our experience) and decent price.

I think, one of the greatest advantages of wahoo is their software support. They are constantly adding and refining features. All in all a really great device and I don't miss my Garmin whatsoever!
These reviews are spot on and I think it's great we hear what you actually think about the product rather than a run down of the manufacturer's datasheet.
I haven't used it in a city but I have found the sat nav mapping very easy to follow a route. Did a route with a friend who had a top end garmin and he was often confused at junctions. Overall very happy with the bolt.
Had mine for a week, it's awesome guys, you can change everything, don't have to bother with the touchscreen in the rain, I love it!
I really like those programmable LED lights atop, neat idea.
watch out garmin , im getting very tempted by this, my poor wallet haha
I came here for the Wahoo review, but hubba hubba I'm sold on this handsome man!
My recommendation is to get the elemnt....bigger screen. But if your into squinting go for the bolt. I've been using elemnt for a few mths now, actually I think it is a Garmin killer. Garmin has pissed off their customers with buggy software.
I don't agree with the screen quality for navigation. I have used a Garmin Edge 810 and now using the ELEMNT. The ELEMNT is a lot clearer on the map when zoomed at 200m for example.
I have this, the cadence and speedsensors, the TICKR and am saving up for the KICKR. Can’t wait to have it all complete. Now just need a big flatscreen for my Zwift set up.
Excellent review. Thanks!
this will prob be my next GPS...always good when competition provides value...I have the old garmin edge 500 which has served me well (despite some software glitches), but never felt the later garmins represented value
the problem with my Garmin edge 520 is that in order to make it work with a Stages power meter without interruption I need to mount it in the non-drive side handlebar, instead of the more aero mount in front of the stem. Does anyone know if this computer offers a better connection, less interrupted with a Stages power meter?
I'm glad that there is finally worthy competition for Garmin edge units! I know there are other products out there. But from what I have seen, none of them come close to Garmin. It is nice that there is now some competition so Garmin will start kicking things up, improving their units and software! I love Garmin devices, but go Wahoo for putting up a decent looking device!

I have always loved Garmin devices. The straw that broke the camels back for me is that my edge 1000 ceased to work after water ingress. Garmin refused to fix the unit stating I had to purchase another. Apparently the garmin unit is waterproof and should be covered by the warranty...apparently not. Garmin has gotten too big due to lack of competitors and complacency. I am now anti Garmin and I will definitely be purchasing an Elemnt soon and Garmin, thanks for nothing
Good job on the review

I did 83 miles yesterday and came back with 50% battery life. And i had the back light turned off as well.is that ok for the wahoo battery life?
Absolutely awesome.
Hi there. Are Garmin cadence and speed sensors compatibly be paired with wahoo element bolt?
Looks very interesting...does it also fit on a Garmin mount or would getting a Bolt mean also buying new mounts for all my bikes?
Nice. I would rather get this than the Garmin simply due to battery life. Adding this on the wishlist

Sorry new to this.... How dependent is the Wahoo to having to tether to your phone? If I don't want to bring my phone for the ride, what features will still work on Wahoo on its own?
is it possible to do an endurance Vs race bike comparison views as I'm struggling to find how different the geometry actually is
Just got it today, loved it for 3.5 miles....then my derailleur failed.
Thanks!
i take into account to switch from garmin edge 820 because of many issues of stability and usability while handling courses.
Those maps are maybe good for road cycling but are useless for mountain bike where you need more details when you you're offroad. Apart from that, seems a very interesting bike computer.

Trail navigation for mountain biking would be great to have.
So tempting
It needs turn by turn when inputting routs on the fly. Also it doesn't do avoidance preferences. I attempted to meet friends and was led down 30% gravel bike paths. I missed my ride :(. One other thing... I won't give me correct average speed or max speed on lap summaries on the app. Eg lap 2 showed average 40 mph in a fast moving chain gang. Lap 3 showed 39mph on a slow ride home after coffee stop. And yes, everything is set to mph
Is Wahoo just for road bike or also for mountain bike ?
any deals on the bolt right now?
Read somewhere that you can't create different bike profiles (for example roadbike, MTB, CXbike). Is this true?
im waiting for the Wahoo Elemnt Mini
Seems like a number of cool elements..
Never had any issues in seeing data on Garmin during any weather conditions and any angels.

Wahoo Elemnt BOLT can work with H10 polar heart rate sensor?
one question.is is true that wahoo don't work with Huawei phones?
do the sensors work without the elemnt? not sure i want to buy the elemnt if i can use my phone instead

gregory burczyk Wahoo sensors are dual-band. They simultaneously broadcast data in ant+ and bluetooth smart. Most current smartphones will pair to those sensors when using compatible apps.
Is it compatible with all iPhones (with IOS13)?
I love my Bolt. I do not like Garmin. I ride with people who have Garmins and frequently they aren't working properly. I never hear anyone complain about their wahoo. The wahoo always works and is fairly intuitive.
Hi, If I use the “navigate to” function. How can I make sure that the route will not contain gravel roads? I can’t find a road bike or mountain bike setting. Anyone that has the same issue and found a solution?

This or Edge 130?
Im curious about the mounting, can it be attached elsewhere? I would be interested in using it on a mtb as well and out the front isn't really a preferable spot to place it
@kennynostrebor

It comes with 2 mounts, the out front and a stem mount
So when you use navigation the battery goes to 4 h?
It is difficult to see the LED's in sunny daylight conditions. Wahoo advise there is no fix for this issue. Pity, otherwise, a great device.
In the ads the display seems to be white, but in the video it is green like the former wahoo bolt. Nothing changed
Corrct me if I'm wrong but the 3 front buttons look like they would be hard to press with thick winter gloves.

Thinking about purchasing one of these fairly soon. However I do not know whether I need the speed/cadence/heart rate bundle. Does anyone know whether the Bolt can show speed and average speed without the speed sensor included in the bundle which costs another £50. Is it needed or can I purchase just the computer and save some money?
@IdolOracle
7 жыл бұрын
you shouldn't need a speed sensor - it should just grab that data from GPS (and is arguably more accurate than a cheap Garmin/other sensor). Speed sensor is only really needed on an indoor trainer. Obviously you'll need a cadence / HR sensor for those metrics though
@1994RandomUser

Hi there, the unit would estimate speed from GPS - Not the most accurate and can sometimes be a second or so off but a great ballpark figure if you don't want to buy the additional sensor!

Thanks for your insight. GPS is how I thought the data would be collected. Thanks again.
I love my Bolt, much better than Garmin. BUT............ my sister got one and froze after 2 month of use. She returned it and got a new one. 20 days later, it froze again. Reset did not help. Checked the internet and there seems to be a issue with this freezing. The thing is, if two Bolts fail in a row, that means quality has become a problem. I've had mine for over a year and it still works, but now I'm starting to doubt Wahoo's quality. Let´s see what kind of an answer my sister gets..... She wants her money back!
can you load routes from phone to Wahoo without PC? I have a Garmin 520, and i'm not looking to replace it any time soon, but I do wish I could send GPX files in a more mobile way than d/l on a PC and copy across.

Tim Ball yes, route can be directly load to bolt from phone
@TheRidewithBenDelaney

Hey Tim. Yep, you can get routes onto the Bolt wirelessly via the app. Strava, RideWithGPS adn Komotto routes automatically populate (once you pair those sites), and you can also upload a GPX and TCX files on the app. It makes the method of plugging in the computer and dragging files across seem pretty outdated.

Wahoo has advertised route synch from phone to Bolt while not on WiFi (cellular data). However I am not able to do that and I was told they had to roll back that feature due to problems. We are due for an update from the 4/3 version so I hope it is there!

Ken Blauvelt I have the bigger ELEMNT currently running one of the beta software versions. It's there, though the sync is not yet always quick. No idea why it's not fully quick all the time, though it seems to be something Wahoo are working on. Software/firmware updates happen often in beta, so I would imagine it will reappear in regular in the future.
Ben, Elmnt Bolt is THIRD Wahoo bike computer. You forgot about RFLKT. Didn't have GPS and other conveniences of modern bike computer, but you can't deny its existence even if it's discontinued.

The big noticeable logos and the bright blue parts spoil the visual harmony. All stealth style and low-profile logo could be better. Apart from these, the shape, size, screen, intuitive display and operating method... They are magnificent!
Can you use it with Garmin mounts??

Has anybody used Wahoo Elemnt Bolt with a Huawei phone? Precisely the Honor 8?
Has anyone come from using the Lezyne series of bike computer (ie. Super GPS) to the Wahoo Bolt?
@ickeausberlin36
6 жыл бұрын
I am watching this video because I am thinking about it. The Lezyne not so super GPS let me down too ofter softwarewise and now even the hardware is giving up just shortly after the warranty expired. I was about to order the bolt today but what I am missing is the reroute function. I have come to use it sometimes when I have to navigate in town and use my bike GPS instead of my phone. When I miss a turn it can be difficult in heavy traffic to go back. With the phone conneted I get a new route. Does not happen while riding but usually at the next stoplight. I actually was surprised the Bolt seems to not be able to do this. Did you change since posting this and if so was it a good decision?
Wahoo element bolt price point is awesome. Garmin is I think a bit overpriced. Well you get VO2 max and FTP with it but you need a Garmin power meter for it (the vector pedals).
@quimicos_comunistas

I don't think that there price point is awesome. The edge 820 cost the same and has much more functions. The bolt can't really navigate, so I understand you. If you want to buy a cheap device, you should have a look on the bryton devices.

I guess I can set this up on a tablet rather than a smartphone?
WAHOO devices do not sync DOWNHILL Strava Live Segments and potential buyers should be aware. I have contacted Strava Support several times but they always answer with this general statement: 'At this time, we do not sync downhill segments to devices for Strava Live Segments. Please keep in mind that our system recognises even the slightest negative grade, and there may be segments that display a 0% grade that will not sync to devices for Strava Live Segments.' I am sure that Garmins continue to sync DOWNHILL Strava Live Segments because most of my fiends have Garmins. I am considering buying a Garmin to get this feature back.
I'd pick this unit up if the price got closer to the $200 US mark.
@breyton490

It is, but I use my smartphone for my rides, so the bump up in functionality of a dedicated head unit is still high for my needs. With most of the new smartphones being water resistant, its a a tough value prop.. putting aside if I crash and break my cell phone, the replacement cost would be higher... It will go on sale sooner or later is my guess...
BS on the battery life. Garmin 1030. I have gone out for over 8 hours with the screen on constantly using navigation and I haven't gotten that battery to go below 30% yet. I don't know where he gets that four and a half hours from now.
Hi my Elemnt Bolt isn't recording my elevation correctly. My elevation is always way lower than it should be can anyone tell me why this is.

Ordered a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt based, in part, on its stellar review on Bike Radar. Received it four weeks ago and the device lasted 44 days before it crapped out on me. Was recharging the device with the UBS cable that comes with the computer, attached to my desktop computer. After about an hour I checked on it. The Bolt was spastically booting up, displaying the Wahoo start up screen for a few seconds, then turning off. It continued doing this loop until it "black screened". Would not turn on. What a waste of $250 !!Went to Wahoo's website for some tech support. Sad to report their Troubleshooting Section was of no use. We will see what happens tomorrow (Monday) when I call Wahoo and hopefully talk to a human being. Either they get my defective unit back up running, replace it with one that works, or send me a full refund I can use to buy a Garmin or some other computer that works.Prior to buying the Bolt I was running a Bontrager Node 2.1 which has functioned perfectly for over three years and cost one-third the price of the Bolt. Had to pull my Node 2.1 out of retirement. It's still working like a champ.
Anything is better than the touchscreen on my edge 820. What a piece of horse turd. The touch screen is imporriblento deal with on anything other than ultra smooth tarmac, sweat activates the touchscreen making it cycle through screens. And it chews battery life so you can't get two long rides back to back out of it. I'll switch to the wahoo and see how it goes.
for me the drag isnt important, there is less risk of computer theft
4 and a 1/2 when using navigation on a garmin 520?! wtf are you doing? riding in a cave? I get 8hrs easy.

Garmin navigation sucks! Talking from experience as I have one. Honestly, I did not expect this from a satnav pioneer. But then their main focus is cars, boats and planes; not bikes.
Don't think I could ride through coble stones!
Where the hell did I put my Elemnt?!
This isn't a garmin killer only because garmin killed itself. Garmin is fucking garbage now, wahoo is the king.
You forgot that the Bolt doesn't support Varia radar. That's a significant minus for me. Also why don't you ever review cold weather usage wearing full finger gloves?

That is the only thing keeping me from getting this. The Varia radar is invaluable here in Japan.

Garmin 4,5 hours only ? is it a joke ? Probably if you bright up the display to its max. I have garmin and it lasts at least 8 hours, never less. Never needed the display with max brightness.
