I just bought a 95. non turbo wirh 196K, and the initial owner replaced wiring harness, vacuum pump, and water pump. The best thing is zero rust. I also have a 87 turbo wirh 384K. The rust is just starting to happen in small spots. Not stoplight racers off the line. Even so, I will never part with my two W124s. I love these cars!

Great car - one of the best Mercedes ever produced. Since your car has a mechanical injection pump, it can help to depress and release the accelarator right before starting the engine and, in a cold start situations like this, gently accelerate the engine to a 1000 rpm so that it will come to a normal idle soon. Many miles to come...

Good start! Nice car with the engine of my dreams :-) Love those 4valve diesels! Not Bavarian I might add 😇 And unless the US models differ from the German ones...you don't need to cycle the key. It will glow 60sec no matter what the glow light tells (when working the light only like recommends the needed time). Wishing you good times with your beauty!

Nikola Begonja The OM606 came in 1993...and as far as I know the OM603 did not yet have the slits on the side in the non-turbo-version. Interesting though why a 1995 model would not have the E300 signature?

Greatest move you'll ever make as a first car, but be careful of one specific thing I give you futher down. I've owned one of these in 2.5 liter straight 5, also from 1995, one of the very last w124 saloons. They are a marvel to drive (although being very slow off the line. This car will take you wherever you want to go and will outlive every shitboxes - even the most recent ones you come across) they are cheap to run, bulletproof, and outstandingly comfy on long journeys. Once you get used to driving it as it should - smoothly - this car is beyond belief! I absolutely agree with Nathan Van Egmond, this car will enable you to understand how a proper car should run. The engine is unbelievably well designed. I never rush mine through the first gears and it's been truly loyal to me. I love that thing. It has done 350 k and the engine feels like it has barely been run in.... the ride is superb and nothing rattles inside. It would take a nuclear war to destroy these things. Grab one in good shape that's been looked after and enjoy years of trouble free-motoring! be careful to fully review the entire maintenance history of the car you want to grab. They are prone to feature "seized" glowplugs over time. The failure of a glowplug materializes in difficult cold starts (the diesel fuel isn't warmed up on one of more cylinders, which causes the car to jutter while coming to life and during the first 10 seconds- depending on how cold it is outside) it's a cheap and easy job to complete, BUT old Mercs do suffer from seized glowplugs . If that happens, you're done! the car needs its engine taken out to allow high costs repair. I'm slowly losing mine to this condition. It developped a glowplug failure one day and I eventually found out all the plugs where seized in the cylinder head. I bought my beloved w124 without ensuring the plugs had been changed recently. My little queen is doomed because of this. SO SAD..... one day, it won't start and I've been told the engine out solution is well over 2000 USD. That's the way I get to lose a great car.... because of an oversight. The only car I want as a replacement is a w124. One of the greatest car there is.

Of course... these things were never meant to go fast. We used to have a w123 years ago, and I kinda know what to expect from the w 124. Rust isn't much of a problem, since Bosnia is a rather warm country, especially the south, so I'm not worried much about it. 2000€ gets you a looked after 2.5l diesel with an AC. That is my aim. Thanks for the adice, much appreciated :D
