W123 Viscous Fan Clutch Refill

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

My car would get warm sometimes with the AC on in stopped traffic. This is a sign the fan clutch has leaked its fluid out, or is not functioning properly in some fashion.
Turns out you can refill those clutches in an attempt to get some more life out of them. I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not, but we're gonna give it a try anyway!
Here is what you'll need to try this:

    Tom, Thank you Sir. For those of us that put our cars away for the winter and only drive them in the warmer months - meaning air conditioning season - the 10k weight may be perfect. We will monitor this and we appreciate you so much. Alex in Toledo.

    Excellent point Alex! I am excited to see if there will be any serious change in AC performance. It seems quite good with the heat we have had thus far but it isn't summer here yet.

    You always share the best info. Thanks. New video idea,,, new hood pad. Mine has fallen off as well. See mixed opinions as to whether or not its worth it to replace.

    I've been debating what to do about my hood pad. I've seen a gorgeous woven fiberglass blanket style that holds up to the heat better and looks incredible, but I've heard that any hood pad tends to trap moisture and create a rust problem, which the underside of my hood has started rusting pretty badly so I'm still debating putting one back on or not. I would like to paint the car and if I fix the hood all up nice and then it rusts through I would be really bummed

    Careful on those fan clutch bolts. They are very soft and round out easily.

    Yes! They're pretty much made of butter. I had one that fought me with the 10mm gearwrench brand wrench, thats when I switched to the uO-douS 3/8 wrench, that took it right off and I made sure not to put them back as ridiculously tight as they were.

    kzread.info/dash/bejne/mZiGlLSinZWaoqg.htmlsi=plZ4xr1BjKpf-70b Pierre Hedary's video concerning filling fan clutch with the silicone oil. He does recommend 5k weight unless the vehicle is used in very warm regions, where he recommends 10k weight.

    Well we will find out what the 10k is like in mine! Not sure if TN classifies as very warm but it feels pretty toasty come July or August to me!

    Did you ever hear a difference in the sound from the fan at idle after a cold start (before adding the fluid)?

  • @trythistv

    @trythistv

    Not really. It would spin and didn't ever seem to just freewheel but it never locked up and roared like the fan clutch on my work does (also a viscous fan) I don't notice the fan roaring even now, but its pulling more air and makes the belt chirp a bit when its cold. I suspect it was very low or perhaps totally empty. I should probably just replace it but I wanted to see what the possibility of just refilling it was.

    Hi Tom, after fixing my dash clock in my w123 DT my instrument cluster lights stop working the fuse, bulbs are good and potentiometer has continuity , even when I over bridge the connections of potentiometer it still does not light up any of the bulbs. Turn signals Hi head light sign, glow plug seat belt sign etc. they all fine but as soon I use the head lights there is no light in the cluster and other buttons. I recall once I was done with the clock repair I temporarily hooked the instrument cluster to check if the clock is working, after about half hour I disconnected to clean it up for a final installation I forgot to disconnect the battery which blew me a fuse but it has been replaced still no desired result, Any suggestion where further could I have look for a solution would be really appreciated. Thanks.

    I had a headlight switch go bad once that did something similar, I'd be curious if a trace could have burned off the circuit board that leads from the plug to the potentiometer as well, I've had to repair traces with solder and some wire before, blowing a fuse makes me wonder if something like that may have happened. Might have to pull it back out, take it apart a bit and check that everything is intact.

    @@trythistv Thank you very much for a quick response I think now I understand it more , since after by passing the potentiometer, there was no change, it could be the circuit trace , I sure will try it in coming days. Thanks again🙏
