I just replaced my entire heating and cooling system; hoses, belts, heater and evaporator cores, radiator, idler pulley, a/c compressor, etc and it wasn’t cooling right yesterday. Yup; I should have replaced the fan clutch while it while I had it out! Strange how now I realize I’ve never heard the fan engage since I’ve owned this van.

Good to know! Going to check mine tomorrow to see if it freewheels like this! As I was recharging the system after replacing it, I noticed if I used my box fan in the garage to blow over the condenser the high side pressures would drop by about 20psi or so. Granted it isn't summer just yet.

Easy lesson in diagnostic fan clutches. Glad I watched, I was concerned about my cars (78 Vette) fan clutch. It’s good after seeing the video. Gonna try the dollar 💵 test now, on the condenser with engine running. 🤫

A great thing to add would be about how a clutch can fail by being constantly engaged. My 92 F150 had that issue.

I am having an issue with my Colorado, first off, smell of coolant burning but no leak, seems to be the water pump, second, the truck at operating temp stays at about 1/4 on temp gauge, it used to be a tad below 2/4, sometimes the fan is super loud to the point that it sounds like a school bus, i ordered the waterpump and thermostat, do you think the fan clutch should be replaced as well? when I try to spin the fan its pretty firm, i was told it might be stuck on, but like I said, I can move the fan by pushing it, it just does not do like full rotations, it moves about 4 inches then stops, thanks in advance.

It sounds like your fan clutch is tight when cold as it should freewheel more when the engine is cold. If you engine is running cool, that can cause more carbon build up in the combustion chamber and back side of intake valve. More fuel may be washing down the cylinder walls and getting into the oil with a colder running engine. I would replace the fan since you are already replacing the water pump since you are in the area. Good luck with the repair and thanks for watching.

If the fan clutch is locked all the time, there will be "fan roaring". The fan will make lots of noise at idle when the vehicle is not hot. A locked up fan clutch could be your problem for to much air flow. If you can not spin your fan when the engine if off, this is your problem. Thanks for watching Professor Pentane.

This could be an air flow problem. See if a dollar bill will stick to the outside of the condenser when the vehicle is running hot. If the dollar bill does not stay attached to the condenser due to good air flow, your fan may be the problem. Thanks for watching and good luck.

Is it possible the fan clutch being the reason for the motor sounding like a jet engine?. I've notice the truck takes longer to pick up speed and makes the jet engine sound even higher. It does pick up speed, but when stop at a light it's rough.

Hello Mr. Henry! Is this still a mechanical clutch fan? If so, it is probably locking up intermittently. But, the fan should roar if extra cooling is needed on a hot day with the A/C on. Thanks for watching the videos.

My chevy truck is super cold on the winter and the temperature stays at 160 because the fan clutch is always on and spins faster as i speed up my truck. Is that normal? I don't remember it being so cold last winter, or listening to the fan clutch that much when cold.

So will the fan clutch make the fan shake and make the car belt fly off at high speeds? Or is it the water pump?

  • @reiestrada9167

Hi profesor Norman, My fan clutch takes almost 4 seconds to stop spinning after car turned off, sometimes AC feels like a bit lazy, but very often it works pretty cold, what is actually happening is once i run my truck uphills for lets say 20 minutes, engine temps reach up to 212-216°f, on flat run it average temp is 187-195°f, i mean, it doesn't overheat normally, got to say, i just got replaced water pump, new 182°f stat, good shape radiator, all new hoses, New radiator cap all recently, but my 97' 4runner just keeps consuming coolant from the expansion tank, Sir, can we say that my fan clutch is done? It seems consuming once it gets engine loaded,

  • @ProfessorPentane

    @ProfessorPentane

4 seconds is to long. Normally, a bad clutch will cause poor cooling in stop and go traffic. A/C will cool better in the highway with a bad clutch. I would replace the fan clutch if this is your problem. Good Luck.

  • @ProfessorPentane

The movement you feel is the water pump bearing. A little movement is normal but if it is too much, the water pump bearing is going out. Normally the water pump weep hole will start dripping when this is an issue. Good luck and thanks for watching.

Hi Mike, The fan will "Roar" when the engine is cold and it will rob power, which could cause lower MPG. Not so much of a problem in the summer time when the fan needs to lock-up more often when the vehicle is hot in stop and go traffic.

When I put it in gear the van barely moves and the fan spools up when I apply the gas. After 5 mins the fan sounds normal and the truck Drives Normal.
