W123 Most neglected maintenance points: Differential oil change

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Some things are easy to forget. Maintenance shouldn't be one, but I've come to realize there are service items that aren't expensive or difficult but tend to get overlooked.
We'll take them one by one and get my car like it was when it rolled off the showroom floor over 38 years ago!
This process is going to be nearly identical on all Mercedes of similar era, I know W116, W123, W126 and W124 all share some differentials, literally they are identical, And those that aren't the same will be very very close.
If you have any suggestions of videos I should make, or maintenance points you'd like to remind me of, Please comment and share your thoughts, I am very forgetful but I add all the ideas to a list (when I remember long enough) and I plan on working through every suggestion I've gotten!

Changed the rear diff fluid on my 83 240d manual and the road noise difference from the rear end was amazing. The fluid was changed 6 or 7 years ago and it was time for another fluid change. I refilled the diff with 75w-90 Mobil 1 synthetic and the difference was definitely worthwhile.

Mercedes in w115 w123 w114 w110 w108 w116 etc. Recommends only SAE 90 for the differential.. Using sunyhetic 75W90 for exampe, May cause problem (wear) to tha metal parts... These cars are old and need plain type of oil..

@@user-oc7sc4uj8yno reason to not use synthetic. Cars are old but some things have evolved GREATLY. Oil quality is one of them. Synthetic is simply far superior quality

@@MMWA-DAVE oh I figure its a wonderful joy, and grows exponentially as well, because "while I'm in there" I might as well do wheel bearings and brakes and shocks and I should put on the camber kit so I can correct the rear alignment with the heavy duty springs, and the heavier swaybar for better handling and so on and so on lol

You have a lot of great videos I have come across. I too am a diesel 123 owner just trying to keep it going for many more years of service. Did you ever get around to those CV boots?

@@trythistv I believe I saw a video once about boot replacement and it stated that they are filled with oil? I could be wrong but the boot itself is designed to contain/hold a set amount of oil held in by the clamps. Either way I would be interested in seeing that video when you do it. I am fixing an issue on my 82 300D with the B2 piston in the trans as well as a significant leak on the turbo drain tube.

Another great, helpful video. I have a 1979 240D. I imagine they're very similar. What type of oil is it you used again? And what is the approximate capacity? And what about changing the manual transmission fluid? I looked at mine and it looks very similar to the differential where it has two bolts 1/4 fill. What type of oil is to be used in the manual transmission 240D? 1/4 drain.

I used 80w90 GL-5 gear oil, any reasonable weight near that will work perfectly, just don't use 140 weight or something. 75-90 is an excellent option as well. Takes just a hair over a quart, buy 2 quarts to be safe though. I used conventional oil, synthetic may be better, I will likely flush this oil out again after we've driven for a while since it was so nasty. The 4 speed manual transmissions I've been told to use a much lighter oil or it'll be weird to shift and can wear stuff out fast if used in cold environment where those gears are spinning around fast in oil that doesn't want to flow. Also, yes the drain/fill works the exact same way on the manual transmission, get the fill plug out, then pull the drain plug Some have said atf, I have read that the service manual for the 82 240ds said 10w20 engine oil in the transmission, so I used mobil 1 10w20 when I swapped the 4 speed into my grey 300d, it shifts great and seems happy with that.

Dear Trythistv, Shouldn't one flush the differential before refilling? You mentioned there were small metal shavings in there. Thank you, Peter

I'm not sure how I missed the comments on this video, evidently I haven't been getting notified of all of them. Anyway, flushing wouldn't hurt, my thought process is fresh oil, and I'll change it again after some driving, the first change will get the bulk of the contaminants, the rest will come on the 2nd change.

I was surprised that mine wasn't worse, it was nasty and smelled horrible, but it was still mostly oil-ish. I'm going to change it again after a while and see if the fresh oil flushes out any nasty gunk
