W. H. Basley's GALOPADE QUADRILLE
Danced at a ball in Kirov, Russia, to music by Kirov's full symphony orchestra. This is an exact reconstruction of all five figures, as described in The Dancer's Assistant, London, circa 1870. Discovered and reconstructed by Richard Powers. The music is a suite of Strauss galopades that would have been known in 1870. I don't know why the dancers chose to perform the five figures in the order of 1-3-2-4-5, perhaps a preference of the orchestra, but all five figures are complete. The written reconstruction, with detailed footnotes, is here: socialdance.stanford.edu/Sylla...

My goodness how marvellous, though I dream of doing this often I know I would be a strain to the other more experienced dancers.😩😅

I thoroughly enjoyed these dances. The costumes are amazing!!
Я восхищаюсь женскими прическами, над ними столько труда вложено. И конечно танцы выполнены безупречно. Привет из Варшавы.
Beautiful.
Wonderful performance - danced with such brio and such beautiful costumes. And, isn't it interesting that 102 years after the October Revolution, tsarist-era costumes are in fashion! I have an idead that 100 years ago, such a ball and such costumes would have been frowned upon by the Cheka!

Back for another look . . . and they're still great!
Excellent!
I love the costumes and the Strauss quadrilles I have heard for the first time.
Listening again . . . how splendid they are! The last tune was from a quadrille on themes from Verdi . . . familiar, but just out of reach of my memory! Great performance.

@@barahona68 Ah, so! Many thanks! It was from the "Melodien-Quadrille" Op. 112 composed by Johann Strauss II. JSII composed several quadrilles based on opera and operetta tunes; his "Fledermaus Quadrille" is one of my favorites.

Que belíssima apresentação: a música, a dança, a orquestra, tudo sincronizado. Faço parte de grupos de dança aqui na minha cidade. Adoro dançar!!!!
My daughter and I quite enjoyed this. Super!
Just lovely.
What delightful period dances!
Humans really are amazing!
I love it that the ladies are wearing flats.

It would be very strange to wear heels with dresses in the style of the 1850s.
So that's where the high five originated. 😉 Beautiful costumes.

The music is a suite of Strauss galopades - Not quite so. Beginnig with 5.18 Verdi's music from Act I of Rigoletto sounds.

Обычно эти музыканты одеваются официально. Но в тот день была очень жаркая жара, поэтому дирижер разрешил своим музыкантам одеться неформально.

+moxieola *Thanks for this vid showing a precedent for the square dance of the working class.* The W. H. Basley treatise describes the four-couple dance reconstructed herein: I hit skunk trying to confirm the titles of this compilation of galopades composed by Johann Гtrauſз dem 1en (GeAKM).
