This is why we contemporarily refer to these pieces of music, customs, and dress as “classical:” they have become a timeless embodiment of grace and beauty. This world has produced countless scores of ugly things and people, but the old rituals of Europe remain an escape to a fantastical blip of time and place for millions to this day. Our ancestors from this era would be “floored” and delighted by our ability to hold a ballroom in the palm of our hands.

Knowing the music already as I do, I knew there were dances set to each piece, but could never envision them. This video was a revelation. I was never sure about the Hornpipe, but now I see. The Menuet was particularly charming. I also like seeing the orchestra in costume as well. The only thing that could possibly complete that scene would be having other well-dressed guests around the perimeter of the floor watching the dancers as they sip champagne and eat hors d'oeuvres and petit-fours.

What is romanticised is the hedonistic life of a very few that live on the backs of a the poor 95% of their nations. They own the lands and keep the people (peasants) in bondage and TAXES them on top of that ! Slavery, dire inequality and oppression that all along went against their God's will...!! Those handful lucky few are probably also heavily involved in slavery in the colonies. The viewers here that go dreamy and hallucinate about the glory and beauty of that period would have been the hungry and sickly masses ! The French king and queen, friends and family ended up beheaded. The Russian tzar, family and cohorts ended shot with hundreds of bullets. And I myself am NOT a communist nor socialist, just comfortable that I allow God to guide me daily....

I am in the UK and lucky to have plenty of weekly clubs where one can learn these dances. There are regular Saturday dances (not in costume) too, and enough Costume Balls to fill a calendar. Try Googling either "English Country Dancing" or "Playford Dancing" in your area. You may be surprised to find that there is a club. They don't seem to advertise very well. I know a caller (or dancing master) called Mike Barraclough who emigrated from here and now lives in Phoenix Arizona, he teaches classes and arranges dances. Google him too. He may know of classes near you. Hope this helps. Good luck.

"Aristocracy" was not only dancing and making love day & night. There are many, many, many books showing how most of those people lived their lives in the army, exposed to death and severe injuries every day. If they came back (alive) to the Court, they *had* to be perfect, joyful and so on... And dance for the king who had sent them fighting. This is not my opinion, it's History.

What is romanticised is the hedonistic life of a very few that live on the backs of a the poor 95% of their nations. They own the lands and keep the people (peasants) in bondage and TAXES them on top of that ! Slavery, dire inequality and oppression that all along went against their God's will...!!

My goodness, takes me back to my youth and having to learn these country and social dances. Intricate steps, timing so important and of course, then came along the waltz when men and women began holding each other for more than a touch of hand and oh goodness, what a kerfuffel that became! Girls dancing the waltz were thought to be very "fast" lol Men were taught dancing as well as women. Both species had to know the steps.
