Then do it. Balls like these exist and not just rarely. Most people just don't know of their existence. if you really want to, go to a dancing school and learn it there. Especially the respected and more traditional schools often attend or organise their own balls and if not, ask your dance teacher about local or national balls. If you are in the US, it might be a bit harder than in Europe but even there, many balls are being organised and once you are in the scene, you can easily go up to 10 balls a year (if you've got enough free time of course)

I have no idea why we as a species stopped doing this, at least comparatively as often as one may think our ancestors did back when this kind of music was being written. The class, elegance, and sophistication were truly something else. And the style. You can say what you want about their clothes, but I think they really knew how to dress for such occasions.

Austrian here. We also had a ball during the last year of school. At first, I hated attending the dance classes. It always got so late, at the same time we had to prepare for "Matura" which is the final exam to get a degree. We also had to write a diploma thesis and loosing a whole day per week to attend dance classes was extremely stressful. But when the day came to dance in front of hundreds of people, every exhausting thing was forgotten. It was one of my best experiences I've ever had, and I can't describe how glad I was to attend the ball. I hope that this tradition will never die ❤

I'm imagining the most intense moment between our two main characters, and how Waltz was the most intimate dance of the regency HRs. How they felt the most of the tension unrivalling between their bodies, the gentle swish of her gown against his breeches, the subtle brush of her bosom against his chest when they spinned, their hands clasped, feet moving in harmony while staring intensely into each other's eyes, his hands firmly gripping her waist. Indulged in one of the finest conversation while they fall slowly for each other. It seems like in every HR I've read, if the heroine is trying to evade the hero, or they both are avoiding it for some reasons, the luck would have it that they both would get waltz as their first dance. Because it involves the most physical touch according to books. How romantic. Sighs.

In Europe, the tradition is still very alive. In my country (Czechia) most of the high schoolers (some of them opt out, because they find classic dances boring) attend one semester long classic dances courses. You attend such courses as a class and meet there pupils from other schools from your city. Throughout the semester there are about three main balls where also parents are invited.

@@iknowexactlywhoyouare8701 what? They clearly all have very different dress shapes: full circle skirts, A-line, half circle, trumpet, etc. A feature of a full circle skirt is that when twirling the skirt flows really nicely and looks very full. That's not ""favouritism"", that's just the way fabric works. So take your condescending ""honey"" somewhere else please.

Actually, it was the 19th century (before that, there was no waltz), and dancing wasn't quite as formal in Vienna - people held on to each other pretty tightly. Add to that the prominence of VERY low-cut dresses in the fashion of the time, and you get an idea of why it was considered so scandalous. ;)

I see a lot of people saying, they'd love to go there. You can, if you put effort into it. Balls are really fun and I'd recommend them to everyone who wishes to go there. Most balls are however not as strict as this one is. Usually they are more relaxed without an opening ceremony where you had to prepare months in advance just for these few minutes. They often are just as fancy most of the time, the dress-code is just black tie instead of white tie like in the video for example. Every ball basically goes like this: 1. Every one gets champagne and you can meet people in an entry hall or something. You basically just stand around, talk to people and wait for everyone to arrive. 2. After an hour or so, dinner starts. You get seated somewhere (usually there's a list with your table, so you know what table is yours) and you're always being pared with someone of the opposite gender (all at the table are the same age, so it won't be weird or awkward). As a man, the lady to your right will be your partner and as a woman, the gentleman to your left will be yours. You two now may talk about whatever you want to talk about during dinner. Of course you can also talk to everyone else at the table and later, you may switch tables if you feel like it, but the whole idea of it is that you have a partner for the evening and you won't be alone. So going to a ball alone is perfectly fine, you'll basically get forced to meet someone during dinner. That person should also be the first person you dance with. 3. After dinner, you are free to do whatever you like. You should however ask your partner for a dance (men usually ask the women) at first. The first few songs are Waltz, called the opening Waltz (that's what they were doing in the video). However, it's nothing major like it's shown here, you just dance with many others freely as you like. After a few minutes, the opening Waltz will be over and for the rest of the evening, you probably won't dance Waltz again. Although fancy, other dances are just way more fun. if you want to have an idea what's danced the most (at least to the balls I went to), here's a link to a video I've found: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZaqgvLyeoZnVhcY.html To be fair, they dance pretty well and I've never seen just one pair dancing. Just imagine at least 10 pairs up front, dancing like that, maybe a bit slower and with less figures because most people can't dance that well. 4. At 2-5 am (depends on the ball) the lights will go on again and the musics fades. That's the signal of the host to end the ball. You can stay for maybe an hour and say goodbye to everyone and then leave. If you want to go to a ball but don't know how to dance and are insecure because of it, here's my advice: Don't worry, if you cannot dance. Watch some videos on the internet so you have an idea and you'll learn the rest there. The base is easy to learn and maybe try a figure or two at home so you learn it a bit faster at a ball. A good flirt is to go to someone, make a 30 second small talk and then ask them, if they know how to dance and if so, if they could teach you. Literally everyone near the dance floor will agree and help you a bit out, showing you a figure or two (doesn't matter what gender you are if you ask). Even better, if you got to know someone and ask them if they could teach you a bit more somewhere where it's a bit quiet. I've met a friend of mine at a ball and talked to him. He immediately agreed and we spent easily an hour practicing and at the next ball we went to, he did the same. You won't be the only one, many are in the same situation as you. Once he and his partner showed me and my partner how to dance, easily 2 or 3 pairs joined us outside of the building because again, many people don't have much experience either. *Most important thing of all, have the courage to ask someone!* It's normal to go up to someone random and ask them for a dance. Most, if not all, will agree. After the dance you can chit chat a bit and then go. Dancing with 6, 7, or even 8 different people at one ball is normal, that's the reason you go there.

Also these balls are still a very, very, very important and big thing in Vienna! I was there last year for my semester abroad and balls where advertised everywhere.
