W.F.Bruce Antique Clocks The Exhibition (2013) - Lantern Clock Exhibition

This is from our second exhibition in 2013 of early domestic C17th Lantern clocks which will spanned the years 1600-1700. It was a unique opportunity to see some of the earliest English Lantern clocks ever assembled in one place, sourced from private collectors and our own collection.
A few of these clocks are still available to view in our showroom in Lewes.

I LOVE Mechanical Clocks (can't stand Quartz) and have a house full of them! All have a personality. I think t's one of the most BEAUTIFUL bits of engineering ever discovered! Thanks for sharing.

A very nice collection - lantern clocks are my favourite. It's great that even now, nearly 20 years since the turn of the millennium, that these wonderful and beautiful machines are still around and still telling the hours. I doubt that half a millennium in the future from now that people will be keeping a £5.99 digital clock from Amazon in a collection (it won't last that long!). These old clocks are works of art AND engineering. They have charm, elegance, precision engineering and individual character (as well as rich histories - if only clocks could tell the stories of what they have seen pass!) that is not found in clocks nowadays. I suppose that's probably why so many people collect antique clocks.

Fantastic presentation. I am lucky enought to have one by Peter Closon with original balance alarm and strike.

What a stunning exhibition.. How many other 400 year old mechanical artefacts are still in daily use?

Hello Bruce, I found a Lantern clock in a wall in my 150 year old house. This one reads Henry Ireland and has a balance wheel. It had no weight with it and I am having trouble figuring out the weight. Might you be able to help?

HOW CAN THIS ACCURATE AND INFORMATIVE POST GET 4 NEGATIVES? MUST BE FROM SOMEONE WHO WHO CAN'T TELL TIME, OR IS PERPLEXED AT THE MYSTERY OF WINDING A CLOCK? MAYBE TRUMP SUPPORTERS, WHOSE OWN DEFENSE ATTORNEY, SAID, THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO, WHEN YOUNGER WERE FORCED TO RIDE THE SHORT BUS.
