Revell Germany 07667
The Volkswagen Type 2, known officially (depending on body type) as the Transporter, Kombi or Microbus, or, informally, as the Bus (US), Camper (UK) or Bulli (Germany), is a forward control light commercial vehicle introduced in 1950 by the German automaker Volkswagen as its second car model. Following - and initially deriving from - Volkswagen's first model, the Type 1 (Beetle), it was given the factory designation Type 2
As one of the forerunners of the modern cargo and passenger vans, the Type 2 gave rise to forward control competitors in the United States in the 1960s, including the Ford Econoline, the Dodge A100, and the Chevrolet Corvair 95 Corvan, the latter adapting the rear-engine configuration of the Corvair car in the same manner in which the VW Type 2 adapted the Type 1 layout.
European competition included the 1947-1981 Citroën H Van, the 1959-1980 Renault Estafette (both FF layout), and the 1953-1965 FR layout Ford Transit.
Japanese manufacturers also introduced similar vehicles, such as the Nissan Caravan, Toyota LiteAce and Subaru Sambar.
Like the Beetle, the van has received numerous nicknames worldwide, including the "microbus", "minibus",[3] and, because of its popularity during the counterculture movement of the 1960s, "Hippie van/bus".
Brazil contained the last factory in the world that produced the T2 series of Type 2, which ceased production on 31 December 2013, due to the introduction of more stringent safety regulations in the country.[4] This (after the 2002 termination of its T3 successor in South Africa) marked the end of the era of rear-engine Volkswagens, which originated in 1935 with their Type 1 prototypes.
The Type 2 was available as a:
Panel van, a delivery van without side windows or rear seats.
Double-door Panel Van, a delivery van without side windows or rear seats and cargo doors on both sides.
High Roof Panel Van (German: Hochdach), a delivery van with raised roof.
Kombi, from German: Kombinationskraftwagen (combination motor vehicle), with side windows and removable rear seats, both a passenger and a cargo vehicle combined.
Bus, also called a Volkswagen Caravelle, a van with more comfortable interior reminiscent of passenger cars since the third generation.
Lotação (share taxi), a version exclusive to Brazil, with 6 front-hinged doors for the passenger area and 4 bench-seats, catering to the supplemental public transport segment.[citation needed] Available from 1960 to 1989, in both the split-window and "clipper" (fitted with the bay-window front panel) bodystyles.
Samba-Bus, a van with skylight windows and cloth sunroof, first generation only, also known as a Deluxe Microbus. They were marketed for touring the Alps.[12]
Flatbed pickup truck, or Single Cab, also available with wider load bed.
Crew cab pick-up, a flatbed truck with extended cab and two rows of seats, also called a Doka, from German: Doppelkabine.
Westfalia camping van, "Westy", with Westfalia roof and interior. Included optional "pop up" top.
Adventurewagen camping van, with high roof and camping units from Adventurewagen.
Semi-camping van that can also still be used as a passenger car and transporter, sacrificing some camping comforts. "Multivan" or "Weekender", available from the third generation on.
Apart from these factory variants, there were a multitude of third-party conversions available, some of which were offered through Volkswagen dealers. They included, but were not limited to, refrigerated vans, hearses, ambulances, police vans, fire engines and ladder trucks, and camping van conversions by companies other than Westfalia. There were even 30 Klv 20 rail-going draisines built for Deutsche Bundesbahn in 1955.
Like the Beetle, from the beginning, the Type 2 earned many nicknames from its fans. Among the most popular at least in Germany, are VW-Bus and Bulli (or Bully) or Hippie-van or the bus. The Type 2 was meant to be officially named the Bully, but Heinrich Lanz, producer of the Lanz Bulldog farm tractor, intervened.
The official German-language model names Transporter and Kombi have also caught on as nicknames. Kombi is not only the name of the passenger variant but also the Australasian and Brazilian term for the whole Type 2 family, in much the same way that they are all called VW-Bus in Germany, even the pickup truck variations.

This build gave me flashbacks. The neighbor freind I grew up with had a big family, his dad bought this vehicle brand new in 1969 in the exact colors you chose. All threw your build I thought of when he brought it home, all the trips to town, ball games, and stuff we did growing up. They also got a tent camper and went on camping adventures so I was kinda disappointed seeing it get heavily weathered but hey like I heard someone say, it's a hobby, build your kits for you, and have fun.
After the Army, in the early 70's I was a "Factory Trained" VW Mechanic at "Dealerships". These Bay Window busses were our maintenance mainstay. First Colorado then Washington - trivia - that panel below the dash was cardboard. They stayed OK in Colorado, but the rain in Washington tore them up. You've built a REAL WORLD masterpiece with your assembly, color choices and weathering. Looking so much better than box stock, you make these rigs look like the've just come off the roads. Thanks, Chris, for sharing.

I think we'll see more and more kits being engineered so well that they simply do not need glue but have tons or detail and moving parts. I've been impressed with all the newer Easy Click and press fit kits.
Outstanding video and presentation

Since I cannot afford these kits (had I the money, I would buy groceries; and a computer with the capacity for huge documents, so I could return to my writing), I happily (well, wistfully) watch, enjoying vicariously. Thank you so much! Again, I hear in your music track a guitar instrumental of Bananarama's "Cruel Summer".
Been waiting a very long time for this kit, I hope they make one slightly older (1968-72) version as I'd love to build a tribute of the 1971 T2 that Dad bought brand new.....and I remember that exciting day we picked it up! Funny, but ours was blue as well, And ironically, that van still survives, though it's in poor shape....and that's exactly how I'd like to build my version of it....weathered. Those are more fun to build than ones that look showroom fresh.
My self i am a military/tanks/uboats modeller but recently started to think about building VW bus!Kind of in apocalyptic/or Lost tv show themed.Awesome video mate and beautiful kit by any means 🙌🏻👏🏻💯
I really like the way you encourage your viewers to be creative themselves. Your discussion of the craft paint colors for weathering is a good example. I just bought the model as a result of this video (and because my Dad drove one of these when I was a kid). Nice work, Chris! Thanks.

I think that sometime during the run of the 1st gen T2, the VW emblem was changed to chromed plastic. I wish that they would have kitted a 1st gen T2, as I used to have a '72 Kombi Deluxe; the final year of the short run (4 yrs) of the 1st gen T2. I may get one of these anyway and try modding it to match my old bus. My bus was actually pretty similar to this one: All I'd need to do is relocate the front turn signals and fab up a bumper to accommodate them, and then add the step-board extensions to the bumper as well. Great build, Chris!

A custom touch I would do is add the extra round fog lamps on the front bumper cut a hole in the roof maybe find some to scale weapons like a soviet gun, bazzoka, and a "bomb" casing that is full of used pinball machine parts with a photo of the man that sold it.

My '72 was the final year of the 1st gen. T2 bus and it also had the new, larger tail lights. My front turn signals were still down low on the bumper, like the rest of the 1st gen busses ('68 to '72). Were your seat frames silver or black? Mine were black.
Awesome job! And fine looking kit. The glass is crystal clear. So you got the rust and crust tools out. Fun video.

For my part I prefer the own models to the rusty models but your result is very interesting. It's missing a detail, the tires are too round and the suspensions should be damaged to represent the dilapidated condition of the bus. It is not a critic, it's a remark 😉 Very good job again 👍

Im doing a clearcoat for the first time on my '75 AMT AMC Gremlin, im using Rustoleum 2X Painters Touch clear, do i apply decals before or after the clearcoat? Thx love your videos!
@wwiiinplastic4712
2 жыл бұрын
I would do decals first, so you can seal them with the clear coat. And I have that same Gremlin sitting on a table nearby waiting for me to finish the VW Scirocco. Also have 12 1/35 Panzer IIIs waiting for me to do the weathering portion but that's a different channel topic.
@brunoskorniak9722
2 жыл бұрын
Since you didnt specify if you actually painted your model or not i am gonna assume you were just gonna clearcoat the actual plastic. If u didnt paint it i would definitely spray some clear where u were planning to put the decals. Let it dry. Apply your decals. Let them dry. Then go over the whole thing with clear. The reason is this: Decals adhere a whole lot better to a painted surface than raw unpainted plastic. Usually decals eventually dry and crack off if just on plastic. However if you painted it then put your decals on as usual then clearcoat it. Some ppl just shoot the clear on a car body and use the color of the plastic as the color coat. Just make sure you have something between the decal and the plastic. Whether its paint or some clear. Good luck. 😊
@hpiguy
2 жыл бұрын
I have no idea how the Rusto clears react to decals when sprayed over them. It's pretty strong so I never tried it. I use Pledge Revive It floor polish to cover decals and it never reacts. Watch my video on 'painting with cheap spray cans' and you'll see how I prefer to do my kits.

At the begining of the vid, you've shown us you talk "adult" from Charlie Brown. Could you translate the adult speak in the episodes for us please? Been 'round 35 years now that I'm wondering what they say! lol Really good kit. Engine's really nice for a "sandwitch engine". Only thing annoying with this type of engine (IMO) is when you wanna do an engine swap. They should do a pick-up version of this kit. And another great build.

If only it was a '68-'71 body then I could build my first car. Maybe someone will consider a resin conversion set for the front and rear clips, bumpers, wheels/caps, and the engine. I will get this anyway as it is still a VW Type 2. I'm just partial to doghouse buses.
