Here's a follow-up to a video I made a few years ago about my 2011 TDI (diesel) Volkswagen Polo and it's severe engine issues, caused by failed fuel injectors. Volkswagen (after a bit of a fight) agreed to replace the injectors at no cost to us. That was when the car had done 70,000kms. It has now done over 118,000kms and hasn't missed a beat since, and the noise and drivability issues have not come back.

    Hi thanks for your informative video, I got vw polo 1.6tdi 2013 it start making noise and white smoke, but it come and goes. When sound is loud smoke is more and when no sound then no smoke so what could be problem

    Many thanks, I will monitor this, got local specialist garage to reset injector quality values earlier this week if it automatically re-generates I may be worrying over nothing.

    My mate has a volkswagen polo as well although it runs on unleaded. How many Kilometres with a full tank do you get with your diesel polo.

    hi !!! did you replace the injectors by yourself ? my car has 105 000 km without clean the injector . I'd like to take them out to clean the needle . one more thing , have you ever tried spraying water in the intake hose wile the engine is running to clean pistons egr exaust etc ? thanx !!!

    +Norman Smith Hi, no the injectors were replaced under warranty by the dealership. I've never tried using water to remove carbon build up, but I've heard it works well

    What are the average speeds for city driving and long distance drives? 1200 km sounds like a lot, max I got is 900 km on a 1.2 TDI BM, avg 800 km with 90% long distance km's. My speeds are 140-150 km/h on highway, avg 50 km/h city driving. Maybe I can save some money here with some tips ^ ^

    @@DaveyHoogland I have the exact same car as the video maker guy. Here in Sydney, Australia average city speed is approx 40kmh. max highway speed is 110kmh average being about 90kmh. I also get around 700km per tank city drive. I haven't tested long distance yet..

    Hi, I am not sure about a change in fuel consumption. I think fuel consumption was reduced after the new injectors were fitted

    My car's consumption is quite big. I have read that resolving the injectors problem could fix also the consumption.

    hey man ! I have a Seat Ibiza 6j2(2013) 1.6 tdi as yours. At idling the rpm sits at 650/700 rpm. When im about to start moving it goes to normal idling, like 850/900rpm, but sometimes it doest or at least is to slow to increase rpm, and it sounds shit, like a 3cyl 1.4tdi. Do you know what it its ? Btw, just saw your injector cleaning procedure, im about to do it next week . Cheers!

    Hey! Try the injector cleaning procedure and see if there is any improvement. It might also be worth disconnecting the battery over night to reset the ECU. Let me know how it goes

    +Michael Marko Process of elimination - nothing else would produce that noise under those conditions. The engine would also randomly cut out which indicates a fuel supply issue.

    it wasn't all of the injectors at fault tho was it? you would be a unlucky man if it was. I take it vw replaced them all as a precaution measure?

    +Marcus Woodgaté Its my understanding that VW had a faulty batch of injectors supplied to them, however its unlikely that all of them had failed at once. They were all replaced, yes.

    I have the same knocking issue! And rattling at the idle like i was cammed! Tought it was the turbo going off but more and more i look videos i think its my injectors

    alexaescht vagcom'ed it and misfire cyl 4+internal pressure sensor cyl4. Since the ips is the glow plug itself its likely gonna be only a glowplug change and done, 1 bad pressure sensor would affect all the timing so that would be the cause of the rattling

    Hi Alex, I've got the same car, How often does the DPF regen happen on your car? I've done about 2000km and haven't seen the DPF light come up on the dash.

    If you do long trips including speeds over 70 km/h, you will probably never see the DPF light come up on the dash at all as it just completes the regens in the background. In city driving, with short journeys, expect to see the light roughly every 200km.

    +alexaescht sometimes ive had my rpm sit at 1,000rpm at idle and then after about 20 minutes of driving and it goes back to normal, not sure if this is the regen.. :/ but i have had an error come up on my ecu indicating a problem with the exhaust temperature sensor ..

    +why must i chase the cat Yes, when the car idles higher than normal, this is definitely a DPF regeneration which is occurring. The light does not always come up, in fact it will only show up if the process has been aborted several times (such as switching the engine off in the middle of a cycle). Your 40km commute at those speeds would definitely be sufficient for the DPF to regenerate with no issues.

    Hi Alex I have a problem with Seat Ibiza 1.6 2010 can you help me ? When I start the car the motor shakes for about 2-3min, I updated injectors with VCDS and the problem was alleviated now it shakes a little bit until it warms, the rpm stays most of time at 1000rpm and sometimes when I am driving mostly in second and third gear about 20-40kmh it shakes like the pump fuel is not sending oil properly !! Sorry for my english I hope you understand me !

    Guys i think iv got a cheap way to fix the problem. My car 1.6 tdi did the exact same thing it is a problem with vw diesel injectors. Now this is how i solved the problem or got it to sound a bit bettet, on the overflow on the injectors there is what looks like to be a tipe of non return valve remove it and just free flow it. After i accidentally Brock it. It was to expensive to replace so i just tried it and placed a straight joint on it the noise was just about gone... Looking at the dumb thing now it won't surprise me if it is the cause of the injectors knocking in the first place.. Up to you to try it but i have been driving like this for a while now and can report this. No problems what so ever even after 5 full tanks of diesel as well as the fact my car is lighter on FUEL.

    Alex I have a 1.6tdi caddy on an 11 plate. Had one injector go last week, had it repaired and coded but the van sounds rough still and wobbles on idle. Would VW sort it as was told by another garage that they released a software update that caused problems for a lot of 1.6tdi engines

    I also have 2011 model. Engine fault light shows glowplug problem, but with diagnostic tool it indicates injector 1 circuit fault. Weird thing is that if I unplug the elect wiring one by one, while the engine is running, the only injector that doesn't affect the engine operation or sound is the only injector with measurable resistance. The "good injectors" test open circuit

    +Norman Smith Do you mean the timing belt (the one that drives the camshaft and fuel pump) or the accessories belt (the one that drives the aircon and alternator? The timing belt is a difficult job and I would recommend getting it replaced by a mechanic, the accessories belt is much easier but I have never replaced one myself. VW recommend replacing the belts at 5 years or 105,000km so you can wait a bit longer to replace yours.

    ok.. here we do 180.000-210.000 KM with 1.6Tdi CAYB ?? mine is done last year for the first time at 190.000Km+ now it has 220.000KM

    Diesel injectors are about AU$500 each, so yeah pretty expensive

    Mate , i have the same issue and my car is lying dead in my garage . Is your car making random jerks and intense noise on idle but the sound goes away under acceleration ??

    Hi, no those are different symptoms to what I had. Idle was fine but as soon as you loaded it up it began is run rough. It’s fixed now and has been for several years - new injectors replaced under warranty

    i have a noise that i think could also be the injectors, but... it only does it when the engine is cold and i accelerate, was yours doing it if you revved it idling?

    @@kuqezi2226 Yep, it was the Injectors. I bought an injector cleaning product and luckily it fixed it for some time. I know I will have to change them eventually but it fixed it for now.

    How do I figure out which injector is bad? I tried using a multimeter with ohms setting but it doesn't display any value

    The injectors become physically damaged so I think the only way is with a VW scan tool that can read the relevant values

    @@YZJB when the injectors were bad did you only hear the noise at cold start or was it consistent regardless of engine temp. Also was the noise there when reving at idle or only when you put into gear and drive? Thanks

    AA KZread you should have just calibrated i.e (micro quantity adaptation) on your old Injectors, Might have saved some bucks

    270000km motor makes knocking sound in lower tpm. Specially when outside +25C. No oil consumtion. DPF regen between 400to700km. Vag dpf-free android app +obd2 5€. summer 1/25 or 4L100km, winter +0,5l. Egr-koeler new 250000km. I put injector cleaner in diesel. Its not that vivid as in the begin.12Sec 0-100km. TorquePro. Still love the car after 7years. People think that turbo doesn't varies anymore, to much pressure and to hot inlet. But i don't have something to compare.

    Mate, I have the exact same vw polo (same year model) and it is at 180 000km now and I have never had that sound.. I use Caltex Premium Diesel 99% of the time. Do u reckon it is due to the good fuel or should I expect the injectors to go bad soon? And what's the cost to replace them?. Im in Syd.

    It’s mostly down to luck. We used Caltex and had issues. Now we only use Shell or BP. The injectors are very expensive. Something like $1000 each

    Wow how did you manage that?! My mileage is 145K I replaced 1 and had a rough engine sound below 2000rpm when driving but when rpm goes over 2000 sound goes away

    Im on 270k Km now and they still working fine. I do add injector cleaner every service and never go over 10,000 km on a diesel filter. Lots of maintenance to keep these 1.6 Tdi motors running like they should. That rough engine sound might be your EGR messing around if you haven't removed it yet.

    It looks like VW made a whole batch of cars around this age with faulty BOSCH injectors I have a 2010 model with an intermittent fault where it runs fast around 990rpm and should settle back to around 870rpm when stationary. It is going to be costly at around £500 per injector so I am told..

    @@YZJB It could be, I really don`t know too much about the car. It all started with a new Diesel Regulator Valve being fitted. Car went back to them so they carried out an `Adaption` to manufacture`s settings this has lasted until the DPF needed re-generation at that point the revs did go up but settled down to its normal settings once it had been done . Now I have had one intermittent time when the revs would not go down while stationary after 30 mile trip. Could it be an automatic re-generation that takes place? I am new to VW diesel cars. `

    This sounds like the normal DPF regeneration cycle. The revs will rise during the cleaning process
