VW Up! GTI - WHY MISHA WAS UNFAIR!!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Watch Misha's video first : • Why I would NEVER buy ...
See our Up! GTI exclusive UK first drive video here : • UP GTI TESTED HARD IN ...
THANKS TO CHELTENHAM VW FOR THE LOAN OF THE CAR AND EXECUTIVE AVIATION SERVICES FOR THE LOCATION
Firstly I've got a lot of respect for Misha and Apex so don't mistake this for hate.
When I first saw Misha's video I thought it made some good points. However, having now driven the Up! GTI and knowing more about how it differs from the TSI, I felt he had been unduly harsh on the Up! GTI especially as he had never seen one let alone driven one.
The constant references to how it wont perform well on track are true but not how people who buy this car will use it - GTI does not mean track car. It means a shopping car which can be a bit of fun on a good road as well.
So I hope you see this video as fair in its support for the Up! GTI which is a seriously fun ROAD car.
If you want to drive an Up! on track, go to Nuerburg and rent Misha's 'Sub-7 Up!' which is available via Apex

    Mischa did not say it was a bad car. He pointes out that the GTI isn’t a replasement car for him. Because of that reasons. Maybe you should listen first.

    Hey Ron, thanks for commenting. I did listen carefully to Misha and I heard him say (amongst other things) that the GTI had the same brakes and engine as the TSI. This isn't the case so I thought it was only fair to point that out. There are lots of people at VW who have worked hard to make the GTI and it's shame that someone who hasn't driven or even physically seen a GTI runs it down unfairly as Misha did. We should be grateful VW have gone to the trouble of making the Up! GTI because it took them long enough! I'm a fan of Misha but i am also a fan of the Up! GTI. Thanks

    It’s unfair to criticise a car that you’ve never driven. I’ve driven the Up GTi and the brakes are absolutely fine in every way, my previous cars were (in order) Porsche, Ferrari, Lotus, I’ve got an Up GTi five door on order, l think it’s a superb little car and ideal for today’s roads. I was never able to get near the limits of the Ferrari and just felt like l was cruising around in it.

    I completely agree, I think Misha is just justifying his spending on his up rather than starting from a more powerful better spec to begin with. Sounds like he’s trying to convince himself as much as his audience

    Happy 1 year anniversary Andrew, on the first UK UP GTi review. Loved my first used car and now loving my new one even more with it's bells and whistles spec and my preferred colour - Tungsten Silver. Roof open, climate control on and zipping along my local country A,B & C roads. Such GREAT Fun for little money. As you can guess, I'm still loving this well conceived limited volume fun package. How many were actually sold into the UK Andrew.

    Love the video. I think with the amount of traffic on our roads now and speed cameras these sort of cars are really going to be popular. If the pure fun of driving can be had at slower speeds than all the higher powered hyperhatches i think thats a good thing. At least with these cars you can use/deploy 90-100% of the power on offer.

    Fair points. I know it's a bit of a tangent, but in the desktop PC hardware scene people have over the years complained that a €400 graphics card could be overclocked to match a €550 graphics card, questioning why anyone would pay the extra €150. That has often been the case, and is a fair point. But €550 graphics cards could also be overclocked and have its performance per Euro increased at the same percentage, thus increasing its value. So to be fair the points he applied to the TSI should also be applied to the GTI, which increases its value proposition. It's not fair to compare a heavily modified TSI to a stock GTI.

    TBH tho an UP GTI just is to expensive. Just look at the Fiesta ST, it wasnt hugely more expensive but featured every upgrade Mischa wanted from the standard car. Bigger engine, Rear Brakes changed and much more Why can Ford do it but not VW? Just think about it, here a ST was on offer from the factory for around 17k without any savings and a 140 HP Fiesta was around 15k.... So its possible! The traction control point is that an UP GTI SHOULD have that by standard. Because its a GTI. In Germany a used 2 year old Polo GTI is the same as a UP GTI if you get a good deal. So why an UP then at all? Mischa has the same possibility to get an used 90 TSI for around 8k with the same distance done as the GTI for 13.500. Explain me whats worth a 5.3k difference in Price? Even here in good old Germany where performance parts are hella expensive, you can get all of the difference for the price difference done on the tsi. Btw you yourself fit Bilstein Coilovers. That done to a normal TSI and one of the points, so special about the GTI, is done. And wow the wheels, they cost so much because they are Wheels from VW itself. Thats it. My Wheels are around 1000€ from Ford. But I would never buy them if I didnt get them with my car. The Letter difference probably is because of the difference on the exhaust side bec of the GPF and new regulations for emissions in germany. He probably hasnt changed the drumes on the rear because he didnt feel the need yet. Because the HP just isnt enough to need them yet. Why then on theUP GTI? Because the GTI should have more HP to need it. About the tires, 17 inch means more weight. On the Fiestas many people obt for 16 inch wheels with a good Semislick for thicker sidewalls. Tire width isnt everything. And the 17 inch is not much wider then the 16 inch. But you get a lot bigger amount of mountable tires. And in my opinion you dont get the point why people buy a UP GTI, they expect more performance, they expect something outstanding. And the UP GTI doesnt deliver that. Just compare the difference of a Golf and an Golf GTI? Not the same as an UP and a UP GTI right? Thats in my opinion the main point And if they can build the same thing cheaper by themselfs, sharing an experience while doing so just like Mischa for example, they get more out of it.

    If you look at the title of Misha's video, it says why he wouldn't buy a GTI. So really, it's about his, not everybody's, preferences. I have a hard time understanding why it would be unfair to you, nor anybody else. It's like saying I don't like blue cheese, and you'd get all worked up because of it.

    Great video and some valid points. The only point I couldn't quite see was the price of the wheels offset the extra cost over a Tsi 90 as surely that car has wheels so it would only be the DIFFERENCE in cost you'd be saving. Forgive me if I misunderstood. Love the looks of the Gti and so pleased it doesn't have sports seats because big people just can't get comfy in those for every day road driving which is what this car is about.

  • @volkswizard

    @volkswizard

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi bankox4, thanks for commenting. You make a fair point so I'd better explain. You can't spec the GTI wheels on a TSI so if you really want them (you never know!) you'd have no choice but to buy them from VW for say £1200 the set (probably more). You'd get some money for your old wheels but not a lot for sure which might just cover the cost of the tyres for the GTI wheels. Quite often enthusiasts buy a car but want to change the wheels (Mk7 Golf R for example 18 inch Cadiz to 19" Pretoria) and a set of used wheels can cost well into 4 figures secondhand!

    I've looked at the Up GTi with some interest. Have spent the last six + years in a Busso powered Alfa Romeo, nothing will ever equal it for my budget so there's likely no point trying to find an equivalent. The economy, running costs and potential reliability appeal (the Up appears to be a very simple car by 21st century standards so not much can go wrong). It almost makes financial sense to buy one nearly new than almost anything else in the performance car range when running costs are factored in. I did try a Panda 100hp a good few years ago and frankly it was rubbish, the difference here appears to be that manufacturers have realised that torque is king. When a 1.0 engine makes 150ft of torque then you know it'll be ok in the real world. One factor that might turn me away from getting one is VW's price hike, a 5 door Up GTi now costs around £16,500 which is simply thousands more than the original list price a few years ago; sure they might have bolted on a few more toys but let that be an option rather than forcing everyone to pay the extra. As a result it seems that nearly new prices have fallen very little, a scan of the adverts today shows that even 2018 models will command £11k/£12k which is either forcing you to buy new or getting that feeling you've bought a car that hasn't depreciated.

    Good points made here. I really like the up GTI and when they become available on the second hand market I will think about getting one. It is a lot nicer looking than the TSI. I do think its worth pointing out that Misha did say that HE would never buy a UP GTI as most of the benefits of having one he what already improved on with the TSI. He made the video to address the many people who have messaged him asking if he's getting one (which I think was driving him mad a bit!) If I remember correctly, he did say it was still a good car.

    Hey Adam, thanks for commenting. I get Misha's message, I do but he still said some things that weren't true like how the GTI had the same brakes and engine as the TSI (apart from software) which isn't actually the case, the brakes are bigger (mucho) and the engine is different too. The GTI is an awesome bargain road car, what it does on track to the majority of buyers is inconsequential. I just wanted to remind people of that. Misha's release of all his Ring Garage videos in late 2016 really brightened up my winter so I am a big Misha fan but I'm also a big fan of the Up! GTI too 👍🏻

    That's one way of narrowing it down! Have to agree with you on most points but it will be interesting to see if silver is actually worth £500+ more when it's time to sell. If you look at the Golf R in red it's usually worth less than any other colour so your logic works there but not sure Up! is so sensitive to colour, only time will tell! I went red and specced climate control with the saving over white thinking it might help value in longer term.👍🏼

    Hi Daniel, thanks for commenting. Misha said that in general terms (not specifically about his TSI) that modern cars running on good fuel can produce more power and torque than the manufacturer's figures would suggest. Seeing as this a general suggestion, he seems to conveniently forget that this can also be the case with the GTI. Especially when (contrary to what he says), the GTI has a different engine with a different engine code and from what others have said on here, a two stage turbo as opposed to the TSI's one stage turbo. Even with the significantly larger brakes of the GTI (which Misha says incorrectly are the same as the small ones on a TSI) I still can't see why anyone in their right mind would buy an Up! GTI for track use instantly invalidating the warranty and being an obstruction to everyone else on track. At the Nurburgring Misha's car might keep up with normally faster cars but the Nurburgring is not representative of any other circuit in the world which are usually much faster and will make the Up! GTI feel very out of its depth with the usual track day participants in 300 PS + cars overtaking all the time which means a greater risk of an accident. As for rabbling, have a look at the length of Misha's video and then mine and see who's rabbling on!

    It seems very common for VAG engines to up on power from their quoted figures. Some have said that the official power figure comes from testing a factory-fresh engine. Once it's out on the road, gets a few miles on it and loosens up, power increases. I had a Skoda Fabia TSI back in 2012, and went down to a dyno day with the Briskoda car club, more for curiosity than anything else. My car was completely stock and the factory power figure was 105bhp. The dyno produced a figure of 125bhp ( !! ). The 105bhp TDI of another member came out at 124bhp. A 130bhp TDI turned out to be making 150bhp! I expect that the 1.0 TSI will follow that trend and, so the GTI would also produce more than its factory figure. I've just bought an Up TSI and it's a hoot to drive. If the GTI is "even more of the same", then I think I'd love one!

    Daniel - as a long-year iPhone user I frequently look with envy at Android users as they have much, much more open OS on their phones. I know i could achieve similar “freedom” if I break the system (like Micha with his upgrades “bye, bye warranty”), but with machines as complicated and expensive as smartphones (or cars) - I’d rather have my warranty as wide and solid as possible. That’s why I agree with Andy and stick to the idea of a stock Up! GTI over any tuned, hollow, track machine.

    Hey Joshua, thanks for commenting! In advance of the configurator, if you haven't see the price list with options, a link is in the description of the main video which is now accessible via upgti.co.uk . My feeling is that demand will be high initially but as with the Golf R VW will respond to this and supply will probably be quite good on the new market (VW don't believe in keeping cars deliberately in short supply are their business only makes sense if they sell shed loads of cars). But even though the Golf R was selling new in massive number due to the lease deals, the buzz about it and long lead times on new meant demand for used cars remained high so yes you never know, first year should be OK.

    Excellent video, very fair. Misha has completely missed the point of the Up! GTI and is obviously just annoyed that he has spent a fortune modifying a standard model only to end up with a complete mess of a car that will be far less usable than the GTI.

    Fair enough, fair enough. I am on you side for the facts, I think you have those strait. However, Misha's video starts with him saying why HE wouldn't buy a GTI. So, fair enough as well, I would say. It would be interesting, although, to see him tune the GTI :) And you're saying his name soooo often in the video, my ears are almost bleeding. I would focus more on the comparison of the pros/cons, or what was said, rather than Misha's figure. Otherwise I enjoyed your video a lot!

    I wonder what the top speed would be if it was dropped by a plane in lets say, 1km height? :P (No I won't do the math) Anyway, in Denmark the price difference of a High Up! 90bhp TSI vs the GTI is 4500 GBP. This gap isn't that huge when you know the price of a High Up! which is about 16.800 GBP, the GTI costs about 21.309 GBP. Loving the taxes and the CAR! I need to try it out when it arrives.

    Hi Jason. Thanks for commenting. I haven't got the spec of the Swift but the big difference is that the Up! GTI is a cool car, the Suzuki brand just doesn't have the appeal of a VW, especially a GTI one. Rightly or wrongly brand perception is a massive factor in purchasing decisions.

  • @Jasontvnd9

    @Jasontvnd9

    6 жыл бұрын

    People who buy a warm hatch are generally people who like to drive , If people think the rebadged Skoda Citigo is cool because it has a VW badge then that's disappointing. In terms of spec the Swift Sport which is coming out sometime in the next two months features the following as standard. -Adaptive Cruise Control -Autonomous Emergency Braking -Lane Keep Assist -Android Auto / Apple Carplay -Satnav - Heated Seats All for no extra cost. Now if we look at this from a top trump perspective in terms of performance we get the following. Suzuki Swift Sport -140BHP -168lb/ft Torque - 0-62 8.2 Seconds - 130MPH top speed. Now i'm not saying the Up GTI is a bad car but i'm certainly allowed to play devils advocate and to me other than a badge on the front is looses out in almost every other area.

    Hi Richard, thanks for commenting. Yes indeed VW could have made it better but look at the price! There are non-GTI models going for over £13000 so at £13750 it's a bit of a bargain. Yes they could have made a wide arch bodyshell, xenon headlamps and rear disc brakes like the Lupo GTI which would have probably added £1000s to the price and had little effect dynamically. People are excited because it's such a simple car - makes you wonder how many people want all the gizmos on their Mk7 Golf GTI that they are forced to have.

  • @aj63
    @aj636 жыл бұрын

    Good points Andrew, how embarrassing for Misha !! The UP! GTI is obviously small and light making it nimble and feeling quick on the road for those very reasons, should handle well too. Here's the problem in my opinion; the GTI badge should = fast and desirable. Like the mk4 Golf GTI anything that is achieving 7.5+ seconds 0-60mph is just not worthy of a GTI badge in today's hot hatch world. All this does is dilutes and embarrasses the GTI brand in my opinion. So for that very reason I'm not a fan of this car as it should just be called GT or City Sport, something like that just as the Golf mk4 GTI should have been rebranded as the GT due to performance. I'm not saying the UP GTI is a bad car, it's just not branded correctly and VW yet agin needs to be careful with GTI heritage that can be easily damaged.

  • @volkswizard

    @volkswizard

    Hey AJ, I thought exactly that until I drove it but in the context of a city car, it's fast and handles well. Had to park the car overnight with the hand brake off whenever it rained because the rear brake pads were frozen solid (rusted) to the drums when the hand brake was on..!!! I looked ridiculous in the morning literally twisting my car as I applied ever increasing power trying to get the brakes to release..! Had the exact same problem on my Lupo. I love my Volkswagens (now own a Golf estate) but would never suggest any one ever buy a VW subcompact.

  • @volkswizard

    Hi Upfreaks. Thanks for commenting. Pads can stick to the discs as well - they both work in the same way as a handbrake using similar materials. I tend to avoid using a handbrake as much as possible when safe to do so (inside a flat garage for example), preferring to leave the car in gear. Unfortunately the new Electric Parking Brake decides it knows better and engages when ignition switched off but you release it again and it will stay released.

    Ergh this is a common problem with Volkswagens, when I used to work for the company photographing the cars the drums would often stick if they had been left alone for a couple of days. Jolting the car back and forth would usually ping the drums open but doesn’t do the clutch much good.
