You’ve probably already established this by now but you should definitely be running green fluid, I learnt the hard way! The red stuff eats seals in the t4 and I went through 2 steering racks leaking fluid into the boots before I realised but in all fairness it was done by a garage at that the time who just added normal ATF fluid without checking which eventually killed them 👍🏼

Hi Joel, great video and it also had others highlight the differences in fluid Colour. I’m about to sort this issue on a friends van and find all of this informative. My only suggestion to others attempting this would be to degrease the engine before starting the job! Always much nicer not getting so filthy. Well done!

Great video Joel, I’ve done the same and the results were night and day. I think you might be using the wrong fluid though. You have the same reservoir as me with a green top but you filled up with red fluid. To my small amount of knowledge on this topic there are two types of fluid and they are distinguishable by their colour, red and green. (There are tanks with red tops). Mixing the two together can cause premature wear on the seals within the pump. I made this mistake before I looked into a bit before I changed the pump. Might be worth doing a little research to see if you come to the same conclusion, if so it’s simply enough to flush the system through with fresh green fluid. Let me know your thoughts.

Mine is really juddery at low revs and often won’t turn at all without a lot of effort. The MOT garage said is was a knackered rack. I’m not convinced. Think I’ll try the pump first. Thanks

The power steering fluid looks to be red which, with your van having a green cap on the PS reservoir, is incorrect. The correct fluid is CHF11S. I noticed another T4 youtuber also had red fluid in his reservoir with a green cap. Different seals are used and if the incorrect fluid is used it basically eats the seals. How is the steering rack? Any signs of leaks? Are you topping up the power steering fluid often? When my rack needed replacing due to leaking the bellows on the track rods was full of power steering fluid.
