VW Passat Review | 1998-2005 | 5th Gen

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I review a 2004 Volkswagen Passat GLS which is part of the 5th generation model of the Passat, built from 1998-2005. The Passat saw a minor refresh in 2002 so the 2002-2005 models are considered the B5.5.

I have had this car since 2008 and the only thing I had to change besides oil, brakes, and belts was the wheel bearing. Fantastic car never broke down and saved me a ton of money on maintenance.

I want to buy one 2004 but I think the Volkswagen cars normally you can hear the valves more than others?

I have the 2003, white, v6, and still under 37,000 miles. Paint is pristine. Hopefully I can drive it for another 20 years, I never tired of it and still love it.

The wagon is even better. I am clinging to my 2001 wagon as long as I reasonably can. Best sized, best configured car ever offered on the American market. The big advantage over the A4 (I had a 1996) is additional rear leg room.

@@paperbackwriter4145 the Touareg was nowhere near simple, IMO. It was similar to the Phaeton but in SUV form. Styling was simple though.

Have an 05 with the 2.0 TDI. 213,000 miles. 38 miles per gallon. No oil usage. A keeper.

I also have a 2005 GLS sedan with the TDI. I’m at 191K miles (December 2023). I am the second owner. Love the fuel mileage (worthy replacement and upgrade from the 2003 Civic I was driving). Large car feel with economy/subcompact car fuel mileage. I would have another B5.5 if something happened to this one.

I have a 2002 1.8T Same trim and model as this just 2 years down. My 0-60 time is not 9.9 seconds its closer to around 6.5-7, even with an automatic. But this aside, its a very reliable car, probably one of the best older cars you can buy. Nothings broke yet, I did get an oil change and fixed a sensor when i bought it, but other than that its perfect.

Yes, I had same 2002 1.8T GLS stick shift. Super solid. I had to replace upper/lower control arms, some other minor stuff . Cruise control stopped working . Drove it 150,000 miles, overall great experience . Not a lot of manuals were shipped to USA.

long time reliability. 1.9 130hp, 100hp 1998-2005 machine is one of the best machines ever created. and other about this car- no rust on this cars, and rarely something brake. only bad thing about them is door panel cloth after 15 years is not attached to the door panel tight anymore. i know some people who made over million killometers with this car, reset it and then couple hundred thousand more and sold it. not even talking about the shitty cars they do nowdays. today i would rather probably go for toyota or honda.

yea you right about that, i own a 2003 passat and been driving in many more with this loose door panel cloth, also like in this video, mine included, the central console cup holder are broken

Its not a V8 its a W8 , two 4 cilinder engines build in one (prototipe for the Veyron engine) , also comes with a 1.6l In EU too. Decent car i heared they're called the "Panzer" after the tanks since they're reliable in EU and like has no death , been build verry good.

They are reasonably reliable only if properly cared for, something the average European does better than the average "throwaway society" American.

Own this in India, 1.9 TDI 130 bhp AWX 5 Speed. Still gives me 55-60 mpg and has aged well and doesn't look dated even after 20 years.

You're driving the GL base model. It lacks the leather everything and steering wheel controls of the higher grades. 3 levels of trim. GL, GLS and GLX. The wagon version is the better choice. Has more room for everything. 195k miles and still fast and strong.

Depends on the car, particularly its maintenance and repair history. Since I am the original owner, I can keep driving it with confidence. I would buy a used one only if I knew the full history. (This was the case with my 1996 Audi A4 Quattro, which I bought from the first owner specifically because he had a full set of service records and only one very minor collision.)
