    The pre facelift when it came out in 97 or whenever it was was utterly gorgeous in my eyes, especially in v5 form. Reeked of class and the interior was the selling point for me. More 3 series or a4 territory than mondeo and vectra of the day. I was a boring child lusting over cars like this and the vauxhall omega rather than imprezas or 306gtis.

    @@azgarogly I had to retire the Audi A4 earlier this year due to a literal meltdown of the power window harness. I considered keeping it as a project car, but did not have room for three cars, and really needed two reliable ones, so I replaced it with a 2016 Golf Sportwagen. (We are die-hard sports wagon fans!) It is interesting to compare the VW Golf Mk 7 platform (transverse engine, 6-speed Tiptronic) with the B5 A4 platform (Passat). The Passat wins on rear legroom, rearward and sideward visibility, and cargo space, but both are eminently practical and enjoyable to drive.

    @@johne6081 I say paltform and passenger comfort and visibility are not dependent on each other. I never drove VAG car with longitudinal engine, but I guess these must be quite ok.

  • @johne6081

    @johne6081

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@azgarogly You are, of course, correct regarding comfort and visibility. The longitudinal (Audi platform) vs. transverse (VW platform) difference manifests only very slightly in handling, because both platforms put the engine far enough forward to make the cars slightly front heavy, and therefore understeer-prone if pushed too hard. The longitudinal format simplifies AWD configuration somewhat, but obviously not insurmountably. The biggest drawback of longitudinal is that the intrusion of the front subframe significantly reduces the size of the oil sump, such that my Golf 1.8T has 6 qt. with a puny filter, whereas my Passat 1.8T holds 4.2 qt., and only if I use an oversize (full liter on prefill!) Mann 950/4 oil filter, which is larger than the "official" one.

    The VW Passat B5 & B5.5 is one of my favourite cars that I’ve had. I think other manufacturers did not take on the solar sunroof as much as they should of & in the age of electric cars coming more desirable why hasn’t the solar roof been updated so better miles better charging times and solar is free.

    I despise the VW Passat. Not because it's a bad car- it's a good car if you're looking for something comfortable and economical at a reasonable price. But it is so unbelievably, soul crushingly boring that I can't bring myself to at least not mind it. It's the sort of a car that you get into and suddenly you appear near your destination not knowing how you got there. You go full autopilot, not remembering a single thing about the drive. What's the point of owning a car that is so awfully forgettable? You are loosing 2 hours of your life either way, so why not make them at least a bit interesting!
