Not sure if you searched it up, but it's just the type of communications system components (usually in a car) will use. It's one big loop, along with other busses, that have a bunch of computers on it all talking to each other.

Late post, and it has probably been asked, but I was REALLY looking forward to the Apple CarPlay demonstration that never happened. That is the MOST important reason why I was looking at this review, otherwise, why bother upgrading the entire system when you can just add a BT module to the aux-in and go on? Good video, nonetheless!

I'll be picking up my '07 Mk5 GTi later on next week... Keen to get this stereo into it. What year model is the GT? Have you had any battery drain issues with it?

No issues at all with battery drainage from it. I believe it’s an 08

so did yours come with the harness and adapter or did you have to order it separately? because all the ebay ads for this radio say it will not function in 09 or older without a bunch of extras. if so what did you have to buy. thanks

We use Spotify all the time with it. I think it was the early mk5 that needed the canbus update as ours did not need it.

@@rieewoldt I ended up buying an aftermarket Android radio that works well but I had a friend help me out with installing it. Some wires had to be soldered but I don’t think we needed a canbus adaptor for it. My steering wheel controls didn’t work anymore though and I haven’t fixed that yet, so I’ll still have to look into that. Not sure if I need an extra adapter for that or if I can just set it in the radio’s settings. Sorry if I wasn’t of much help but this is all I know, however you can always ask your local garage for help (preferably a VW garage)

Haven’t had any issues with battery drainage on the mk5. Not sure about upload to canbus. But everything works fine

Volume + & - and track do and mute. That’s all that worked before I changed it, so as far as I know they are working.

Hey, good video. I want to do the same thing with my vw touran tdi from 2007. however, there is an issue with pre 2008 cars not being compatable with this rcd 330 radio due to battery draining issues. to fix that, i have to get a new gateway. could you maybe do a video on how to change gateways in vw cars? thanks!

Yeah it’s pretty good for what we paid for it. Was $400 but needed to buy another usb to lightning cable for the iPhone for it as the one that came with it wasn’t very good and kept losing connection with the iPhone.

Should be a straight swap. Mine did come with a harness so just make sure yours does too

Hi, when you install this can you not just remove the stock radio and fit the new one in directly from that section or do you have to remove the top part, trim etc. ?

You have to remove the top part to get to some of the screw so you can get the radio out

Pretty sure that’s what’s meant to happen, so you can see it at night. Or the lights aren’t turning on when you turn your headlights on?

Sorry I’m not sure. Don’t know why you would want to keep a cd changer from 14 years ago. Just download your music. The quality will be better anyway

I’m not sure with the iPhone 12 Pro. I know we had trouble when we got new iPhones. Fixed itself after an update but also the Mrs connects her via a cable and not Bluetooth so she can charge it

Awesome video! Going to follow your video when I buy one. I'm going to buy the RCD 340 as it comes with Android Auto, although the unit doesn't come with the adapters. Do I need them? If so, where would I get them from (I've got a 2010 MK5 R32)?

Don't do that, it will fry your climate control, that's what the last owner did to my car, so now I have to replace the whole climate panel

Not sure. Maybe go around brackets on the side and try prying it off. Maybe it’s just stuck from heat over the years. Just a little bit of force.

I don’t believe you can just plug straight in. You would have to use line converters to get RCAs for amps.

does ti also connect with rev cam?

There is a connection for a reverse camera. However we don’t have one so I’m not too sure the quality of it

I have a full MDF red display like this car and brought my rcd from AA auto aswell with the steering wheel adapter for the mk5 - have you realised yet that when you press the arrow buttons on the steering wheel to change the trip menu in the MDF display it also changes tracks or stations at the same time?

Charlie Frost yeah same. Actually never had audio options on the MFD. I just turn the radio off or just leave it on km to empty

It will fit, but what people are saying you will need to replace the CAN. We didn’t and haven’t had any battery issues. I don’t know the part number for the CAN to replace, sorry.

Joel Maynard If you use a scan tool or vcds you can find out the model number of your canbus gateway. You need to find what variation of canbus you have which is determined by the last letter in the mode number. I will check for you but I believe that all canbus gateways that end in K or later are fine for the rcd330 without battery drain.

No need to. It’s pretty good. The Mrs calls me nearly everyday on the way home in the golf and I can hear her just fine, can even hear my son in the back seat clearly.

Hi, I have a VW Golf 2005, but my car doesn't have parking sensors, And with the rcd360 you will get a parking pilot. So will it always peep even if I install a reverse camera?

Hmm not sure. I’m sure there would be an option to turn it off. Camera and sensors normally run separately, I’m pretty sure don’t hold me to that though

Don’t see the difference with a tdi. Depends what the rcd330 comes with I guess.

Mk5 r32, yes for fitment. Not sure about the whole canbus thing though. Check other comments here. I believe MY08 don’t need a canbus upgrade. Anything older will as they drain batteries apparently

@@HarrodsGarage thanks for ur fast reply I’ve heard that the vw golf needs a special gateway otherwise the battery of the car runs out quickly. Did u had this problem or did u used a gateway?

Hi I have heard that you can retire the engine bay fuse box instead of replacing the canbus, have you heard of this, if so is it successful ?.

I believe it depends on your year model. My adapter came with the head unit so not sure on part number. You Could search for CAN adaptor rcd330

you need canbus installation, take the wire from the ac unit. orange green is + and orange brown is -.

It was local to me but on eBay. I did have the link up which had it for around $400 and they put it up to $1500 so I delete the link. Just google ‘rcd330 apple car play’ and you will find one local to you.

Just google Rcd330 car play. That’s what I did. Now the one I got was linked in the description but they changed it to $1500 so I deleted the link.

Looking at this head unit for my 2005 mk5 GTI but i'm concerned about battery drain

I didn’t have an issue with our battery until late last year, I tested the head unit circuit for a parasitic drain and it was the head unit. You will find in the comments of this video people saying you need to upgrade the CAN on it.

@@HarrodsGarage I know some of the RCD330 head units come with the CAN for steering controls and this needs to be used :)
