    Hej Björn, I drive the e-Golf myself. Just fyi concerning the Lane Assist: If you want to avoid „Ping-Pong“ , you have to go to the Setup-menu, and tick the box saying „adaptive lane assistance“. Then the car ist learning: If you drive it centered for some time, it will stay centered. If you drive it - lets say - rightmost within the lane, it will stay rightmost afterwards. I think this feature is pretty cool - test it for yourself... :-)

    Great video Bjørn. I take both, Leaf 40kWh and e-Golf 35.8kWh for rent from time to time, and I drive them for 330km both ways on motorway each time (~700km total distance per each rent on average). What I can tell, is that Golf is more efficient EV, and a much better car. To cover 330km on motorway (90% of the route) in e-Golf, it takes 4h and 20 minutes (out of which 2x30min goes for fast charging), but in Leaf I spent at least 5 hours due to battery overheat and resulting slow charge speed on second fast charging session (#rapidgate). In e-Golf, I can afford to drive 120km/h all the way, while in Leaf I have to keep it at 105km/h to avoid overheating. I've even managed to overheat Leaf's battery this summer, by just driving on cruise control at 144km/h for 10 minutes, after which car limited the power output and turned on turtle mode (I have a video).

    Have you driven the e-Golf @ 120kmph for 190 km distance before charging? Or what's the furthest you have driven on the motorway before needing to recharge?

    I own this car - albeit with the digital cockpit which is a 100% improvement to the dash. But damn, the car is a blast to drive; and in Canada, it does very well in cold weather. In fact, most of the time below 20kwH/100km even in -10C weather. Summer, 11 or 12kwH/100km is not uncommon if speed is kept below 100km/h for the trip.

    The eGolf is just such a great car, today as a used car quite a gem… (lane assist has two modes. You have some big errors in this video, maybe you should have a look into the manual before using some features, would make it easier, too😉

    You should try the same test again in 20+ degrees in the summer, and also you should do the Kona TBTP again now at around 0 degrees, instead of the perfect conditions you did the previous test in.

    I am driving eGolf 4 weeks and 2500 km. That is two times more I drove with my fossil car. It is so amazing to drive. Quality is very good, I have keyless entry and active info display, that’s options and they are not very expensive. Avg consumption is 15,3 kw/h per 100 km. The headlights are the best you can get. I wish I have 60 kw/h battery and it would be an excellent car AND an excellent EV.

    Łukasz Sadowski - I think it isn’t high, please remember, the car is new, it’s the first EV in my family and in my street. We made a lot of test drives and everybody drove to test and not to save energy. At the end of a test drive the consumption was more than 25 kw/h. So avg in 2500 km with 15,3 is rather good. If I drive alone for myself to work for example, with a lot of traffic and avg speed of 50 km/h the consumption is always 11-13 kw/h and even less. I am right happy with this car.

    Totally agree, I’m wondering if anyone is going to put a more modern battery system in these to get the range up - I’d prefer these to the ID line. The mk 7.5 Golf I think is just about perfect.

    Best video showing range (with heat pump). A littlebit more tire pressure or good winter tires with less drag and 200 km would be no problem. And the use of seat heat is also more efficient, so inside air temp could be reduced bei some degrees

    I bought my E golf new, just 3 years ago. I live on the island of Rhodes, Greece, which is a great EV climate. I've done 56,000km so far and the long range average is 10.5 kw per 100km. Mixed driving, city/country but with a lot of hills. I regularly get 300km on a charge but that will drop once the outside temp drops below 15-16c. I love the car but I'm not sure its ideal for a road trip back to Ireland.

    The small gauge on the left is for reduced power when the battery is very low. But you rarely need it. Golf is not a light car because it is built very solid. But compared to a fossil one it feels so much better to drive. Consumption on the autobahn is actually lower than I3, but not as good as Ioniq. And you can find them used for a very good price, if the range fits your daily commute.

    Another great video. I have a e-golf. Do you know a great OBD2 scan tool for the VW e-golf that can give me more information on the battery status, like leaf spy for the nissan leaf? The VW e-golf doesn't give information on power when charging, battery SOH, battery temperature... Continue to do great videos.

    The only place to see the percent stage of charge is on the desktop version of Carnet. When you click on the GOM range guess, it goes to a second, more detailed screen that includes percent. But even then only when the browser screen is sized small enough to show all the data in a vertical column. On a wide screen, it disappears. It's nowhere on the phone app. Which makes the phone app useless, IMO. Between Carnet and the VW engineers, there are some very funky peculiarities. The timer for the trip meter runs whenever the car is on. Even if you are plugged in and charging. Not sure why it wouldn't activate only when you move it out of "P." The timers reset after 2 hours of the car sitting inactive for the "since start" screen, The "since charge" screen only resets once in drive, and you hit the accelerator pedal. I've gotten close to 130 miles (over 200 km) on one leg, in warmer conditions than Bjorn had, with 20+ miles left. At 60 mph. An important trick is to run 45 psi in the stock tires, or a set like them, to reduce rolling resistance further. I've seen 5.4 miles per kWh at 75F in the summer. That's 115 Watt hours per KM. Quite a bit better than the 149 Bjorn got in such cold weather.

    The VW NEO comes late next year. That is going to be an interesting EV, given that its going to be build on a new MEB platform, not the MQB platform this golf is build on.

    I think the range is pretty good considering this was all highway driving and near freezing temperature. If you were doing city driving range would be drastically better.

    Its a efficient car, because the consumption is very good for 0 degrees! But wait for the I.D. Neo, it will be a very good car and is build up on their MEB, so it will have all the benefits of a 100% e-car. And they will produce a big amount of them, so you can really buy one in a normal period. For Ioniq/Kona/Niro you have to wait ages, because of their very very low production capacity.

    I think that the e-Golf range is weather dependent. I've had mine for about 6 months and I agree that, in the cold weather, the range is about what you measured. The heater and demister cane the battery. However, during the warm weather of Summer I could get nearer 150 miles (240 km) on a long run, driving at about the same speeds as you. Another thing that drains the battery is driving at motorway speeds, 70 MPH (110 KPH)

    Bit of a negative review but these cars are based on an ice platform and really are built as compliance vehichles. Also it’s was + 1.5 when you started out. In the summer months you will get another 30% or so out of the range. It really depends on how you drive a Golf to get the best out of it. One thing I do like about the VW is the build quality and the interior feel. The Kona is very scratchy like the leaf and others, the Golf does feel premium and is... A Golf. One think no one has mentioned and that is this car is the only car that I have owned that has gone up in value. Work that out! It’s now worth £2k more than I payed for it a year ago and 12k more miles. It’s a car that if you are only doing 100-120 miles per day then it’s a great EV, if you want more mileage range it’s not the car for you. For those who want the Kona (I do) the wait at present in the U.K. is 32 weeks. I’m not waiting for that!! I feel like I’m buying next years model at those waiting times.

    Norway isn’t typical in EV sales and you have dramatically more second hand EVs available than any other country. It’s obviously a market that’s saturated unlike the U.K. where there are only 120k EV registrations in total. In this country the Golf is seen as a premium small car and the resale values are high. The fact in London there is a huge demand for EVs to beat the congestion charge and that fact in most cases you don’t need a long range then the Golf fits the bill perfectly. It’s just a better build quality than most EVs out there and like you I have driven many. Your country is excellent in the uptake of EVs, and let’s hope in this country it will also take off soon, but if the manufacturers cannot meet demand (for what ever reason) then the uptake will be very slow. 32 weeks wait for a Kona?? Seriously why would anyone wait that long for a car? The issue for the EV marker is going to be like cell phones. Next years model is out with better range so what do you do? Wait? Or order your Kona now and get delivery of an almost year old car? So In answer to your devalued e-Golf, send it over to the U.K. as it’s worth more here than your over saturated second hand sales there.

    I completely agree with you, Bjørn. The eGolf is an excellent car, but it's not a great EV! I have driven it quite a bit, long and short trips (Bergen - Stavanger), and it's a great car to drive :)

    Typical German, over the half capacity as Kona and only 38% range. Weight comparable but Golf smaller. Prices very similar then I can't see any logical reason to buy Golf apart of ego and "social status". 😁 Thanks Bjorn 👍

    Believe me for some time of people it is a social status. Just look on roads what time of people driving them, not all but plenty are with chains on neck and with flat baseball cap. They not even sat in car but lay like in some sofa and barely you can barely seen them from behind the wheel.

    I like that the state of charge isn't totally in your face all the time (a complaint of mine about my Spark EV) but it would be nice if there was a way to confirm the percentage.

    @@0401asdf Model 3 comes to Europe in March 2019. Kona has actually longer delivery time than Model 3 here in Norway, even without Model 3 reservation from 2016. Kona will have low production numbers, but Model 3 has high.

    German idea of ev is diffrent than americans. In america it has to be better than ice cars. In germany ev is not as good as ice car. So they dont make it better. Good effiency tho.

    Bjorn, at 7:57 you use the Brake mode. You should use the coast mode where the regen mode shows as D instead of B. I am not sure if this affect much, but on B mode the regen braking is at the maximum regen level.

    You sould add on the describtion that you have tested the car during 0-5 degrees ;) If it`s 15++ I think you will make 230km easyli. Have you seen E-Golf range test by 1001cars? he is driving in 13 degrees but only city speed zones

    "When it comes to the car as an EV it lacks many features". But you only mention not being able to see the state of charge? What else is it missing that other EV's have? Btw, it has been tested that this model has 32kWh of usable charge, which with 14.9 kWh/100km would mean ~215km, if anyone is wondering. This is pretty accurate to what I've experienced personally.

    Charging power, battery SOH and battery temperature are missing. LEAF and ZOE for example do show some of these numbers.

    eGolf is a compromise car. Put a battery in a well known chassie and do everything that the VW buyers will not be confused. The consumption is really good. I do not understand why the range is only 190 km with a 35,8 kwh battery. If you calculate with 32 usable kwh, it should be 213 km.

    Those final numbers don't add up to 35kWh. If we extrapolate to 200km total range for this test (I'm being a bit generous here) at 149 Wh/km we only get 29.8 kWh of useable capacity. Either the consumption data is incorrect or the car isn't giving you the full capacity.

    My wife drives a 2017 e-GOLF. I believe the useable capacity is 31.5 kWh.

    Not bad but efficiency is not as good as the Model 3 RWD for sure. 14.9 wh/100m is about 240wh/mile. At that speed, Model 3 is probaby around 200 to 210wh/mile

    You should not use the CC when testing. The CC does not see hills and stuff like that. And it is also big diffrences between brands on how the CC adjust for hills. You should just drive as normal if you want a consistent result between brands. What you are doing here is more testing the CC than testing the car.

    Actually a very good car with an (unfortunate) ICE user interface. Shows what a good platform the Golf is. It's the car I choose when I use Zipcar in New York City. Bit boring, maybe, but drives so well. E-golf with 60-70 kWh would be superb. Guess that is what the new ID Hatchback will be.

    @@ryccoh In NYC, can't afford a car (garage parking is $500+ a month), so I use public transport and Zipcar. Zipcar is a service where you can rent a car for as little as 30 minutes with fuel and insurance included in the price. Golf is ~$9/hour along with cars like Civic. More expensive as you go more fancy. Very useful service for city dwellers who need a car every couple of months. Hoping for an EV based rental service like Zipcar soon.

    @@ryccoh Fixed locations, usually in parking lots here in NYC. You go to the parking attendant and he/she brings the car to you. Drop off at the original pickup location. All over US, Canada, parts of UK, Europe. Just google for more info.

    I don't think it is as efficient as the Ioniq. I just rechecked your test of the Ioniq at -10C and the consumption was 160 Wh/km. It would be nice to see a table of comparative results using the TBTP. You must have quite a bit of data now.

    What kind of (electric) car has no keyless go today? I haven’t used an ignition key in over three years now. I feel like that’s a must to have. And it also doesn’t have heated stearingwheel !!! Would much rather buy an Ioniq. With a 64kwh battery.

    +R A This is a low spec car. Higher spec car has keyless, better instrument cluster and heated steering wheel.

    Yes, but it doesn't seem to throttle the speed as much as Leaf. A Leaf will drop to 30 kW and then 20 kW on next charging session. Whereas e-Golf charges on lower voltage and kW and will usually stay on 30 kW.

    @@phamnuwen9442 the heat pump is a thing. Heat scavenger system is another. It is the recuperation of the heat loss from the components of the car to use it for cabin heating in pairing with the heat pump. Tesla and Hyundai/Kia has it.

    I tried to get a test in one and the VW dealership close to me said that it was a difficult one to test and there were none available to buy. They also said that there were not expecting any more. So I am having to look elsewhere for an EV. The best place for me to see one is Milton Keynes at the EV experience.

    Wow. That's the dashboard? Jeez. At least Fiat made an attempt with the 500e to provide a proper modern digital dash for an electric car. But then Fiat also discontinued telematics after 3 years and never upgraded the battery or exported the car to anywhere other than California and Oregon... These compliance cars are just ridiculous.

    I have seen digital dash displays nearly thirty years ago ... The reason for that most cars still have analog displays is that they are faster to read. It's the same for petrol and electric cars.

    Bjorn, i am wondering if when you accelerate on neutral descending a hill, it will not have a gain at all vs regen and keeping the same speed. I am wondering that because the drag is exponential when you go faster. You showed us a lot of time that going at 150 km/h or 200, the consumption is way higher. So I am wondering if going faster on descending a hill will negate the regen loss efficiency. I know we are talking about micro gains/lost. What do you think?

    Regen heats wires and battery = losses. Higher power (current) you trying to return to the battery the more heat it generates.

    @@alexjurin1354 of course. But that's not 1 to 1. What im asking is that loss in heat while regen is it bigger than the drag loss because of the higher velocity the car go, considering that drag is exponentially bigger as the speed goes up.

    @@phamnuwen9442 Often it is more efficient to coast than to regen. It is a bit unintuitive but has been shown to be true. Regen is never 100%, but always has its losses, you see.

But which era of Tesla are they referring to? 2008? No really, I shouldn't giggle. But perhaps VW will have an EV out there that cheats?😁 And if VW really do have a car that can match Tesla for haldf the price, I couldn't be happier. It's all about the progress of EVs and the elimination of the FFV. Not about who beats who.

    Golf vs Ioniq? Ha ha. I mean my Kis Soul would smash e-Golf so Ioniq would kill it in the first leg and no chance to catch it on the way back of Bjorn's test route. E-Golf charges very slow compare to kia/hyundai 1 gen. Mine is 43-47kw vs.golf around 35kw and than 30kw when overheating (and it does :)

    passive cooling...one of the reasons why it's efficient its because there's no thermal management for the battery :(

    EGolf is a stop gap compliance car. See VW iD for what they’re really up to. By all accounts, it’s going to be a great EV and one that is affordable like a VW should be. People are moaning about the big players on EVs without realising that developing new platforms takes minimum 5 years and billions of euros..before you also realise that switch to EV is a seismic shift on top. VW spent over 50 billion on the last MQB/MQB evo platform that this car is built on. I bet they’ve spent similar on the new MEB platform for their EV future. It takes time, be patient. Once they get going, they’re going to be hard to beat.

    @@pxidr eTron whilst not a compliance car is still based on their current MLB Evo base which underpins cars like the Q7, Bentayga etc . So it's still compromised. It's also compromised by being a big fat SUV, but Audi say that's what the consumers want.
