VW Caddy MK1 TDI Build Part 2: Fitting the Engine

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It has been a while since part 1 was uploaded, but now I am back in business and with a 100% focus on this beauty it's time to get some results!
This episode is focused on fitting the engine in preparation for my impending re-design of the firewall. Because you know, AC is a must.. Even though we have just 4-5 hot months in Sweden at the most.
Anyway, hope you enjoy the video and I would love some feedback on it!

    @@cactusapesgarage6580 My brother got the car in a trade, it is White with a Nice paint job, the car is sitting on 15" BBS replica wheels with coilovers and lowering blocks in the rear. It has the original 1.6 54HP natural aspirated but it is to slow to keep up with traffic in the USA so we bought a 2000 Jetta TDI Manual and will transplant it very soon, the plan is to have Air condition as well. We send of the TDI engine harness to S&P performance to get a standalone harness, this will take a few weeks.

    Oo, they do look good in white! Yea, with the little cabin that these have and with a huge window area in contrast to this you would get cooked in the summer heat without a/c. Are you going to take the a/c from the jetta? Or find an original for the mk1?

    I wonder what's causing this. Perhaps there is a difference in the dimensions of block castings on some years or something? I mean, apart from the front bracket in the video everything else has fitted perfectly (well apart from the long nuts for the rear gearbox mount). Did you end up cutting and welding it or did you fabricate your own?

    Did you hook up the passenger mount? I think that timing belt idler pulley that you cut out space for on your mount is going to interfere with the factory bracket on the side rail. I believe your going to have to remove that pulley to make it work. Hopefully you won't have to. cheers

  • @cactusapesgarage6580

    Ah, yes. I did have to cut the bracket on the side rail diagonally in order to clear it. As I am only test fitting and starting it now that will do, but my plan is to cut the original bracket off and make a new one with 5 mm plates and gussets. That way I can clear the idler and keep the strengh needed. (I am going to mention this in part 3 as well.) I must say, you have keen eyes to notice it!

    @@cactusapesgarage6580I've never swapped a tdi before but depending on what motor you have , I thought that was an issue. You could always just delete the pulley to make life simple. the gas /petrol 8v only had the manual timing belt tensioner with no extra idler. My plan is to swap a mk2 subframe into my caddy. maybe I'm just dreaming lol.

  • @cactusapesgarage6580

    @cactusapesgarage6580

    3 жыл бұрын

    @james hendrix Perhaps that would be possible, I guess in order to get it to work I would need a different style tensioner. Although, the cut has already been made in the bracket so it's already weakened. Doh! I have been thinking in the lines of a subframe as well, would require major modification though. Since the Mk1's wishbones are fastened to an extension of the firewall and frame rails. Tbh, my absolute dream with this project is to 4-motion swap it. The "easiest" way of doing that is to cut out a complete firewall and floor from the donor car and weld it in.

Ett tips är att beställa hem SFRO Bygghandboken, det är flera gånger som jag har funderat på en del planer eller idéer och fått svar på om det är möjligt via den boken. Ska absolut gå in och kika!

    @02dag with your second question, are you refering to the front engine mount bolted to the starter motor?

  • @02dag32

    @02dag32

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@cactusapesgarage6580 No I was thinking about the entire front mount and the bracket/reinforcement on the front panel. The engine should rest happily on the two side mounts and the rear mount will it not? Then you will have enough space for the ac. Cause I have really never understood the need for a fourth engine mount on the vw's, and especially on the mk1 and maybe also mk2s with absolutely no support in the front panel. Much better with that reinforcement bar you have there of course. Alternatively, I am sure you can trim a little bit off of the reinforcement bar without making it a lot less sturdy or use washers or small "distancepieces"/sleeves and longer bolts between ac bracket and ac itself. You will probably need something an inch long to clear the reinforcement bar. Great project btw!

  • @cactusapesgarage6580

    @cactusapesgarage6580

    3 жыл бұрын

    I belive the fourth mount is because the Mk1 doesn't have a K-frame (which would add alot of strength) and cars with K-frames usually have the engines mounted to it. So to reduce the stress on the side and rear mounts they added the front one. Just my guess but looking at it, it looks so weak in the engine bay. When fitting the engine I also noticed it sagging alot in the front if I lowered the jack. About 10-15 cm lower, that might cause stress on driveshaft joints. I have been playing with two ideas regarding the AC, either cut the reinforcement bar as you suggested or move the AC compressor up to the PAS pump location. This car is so light so PAS isn't really needed. Thank you!
