VW 2.0T TSI Intake Manifold Failure Explained, P2015 Code

This is a break down of what on the VW 2.0T TSI Intake fails and causes a P2015 Code. Dealers replace these for free up to 120K miles.

Damn, this is THE BEST video I've ever seen on the design defects of the 2.O TSI intake manifold. I've spent more hours than I care to admit researching this topic on youtube and VW forums, and while various videos explain bits and pieces, this video by far was the most comprehensive (complete) and clear (easy to understand). Excellent work! I was contemplating getting the ECS Tuning fix (to prevent the arm from popping off), but now that I see that the arm triangle connection can become worn out (making the flap position not correctly correspond to the actuator arm position), I see that the ECS Tuning fix would only fix part of the problem.

I just got in from adjusting the ECS p2015 "fix" kit I installed. My CE light was off for a week after installing the kit, now its been on for months due to p2015 code. After watching this video I'm probably just going to order a new intake manifold as I'm sure the ECS kit will now solve my issue...at least its getting warm out.....I need a garage

It's crazy how these could be rebuildable, but instead you get the whole thing swapped out. I guess it makes sense that you likely will have another failed component since there are so many. Might as well replace it. Excellent explanation, thanks for being so thorough

My 2015 Tiguan got this code at about 93,000 mile. I removed the black plastic lever and fortunately it was not all rounded out yet. For some reason it just back off the shaft a few millimeters after driving it a short distance. I used a 8 inch vacuum/flue line, slid it over the shaft inside the manifold and turned it clockwise. If you listen closely you will hear the air flaps close completely. Mine were open about 1/8". I used JB Weld on the inside of the plastic lever and slip it back into place, let it dry over night and cleared the code. Over 600 miles later still going strong with no code.

So far, I'm not liking the 2.0T engine. In the past 15,000 miles I have already had coil failures, PCV failure, and today I got the wonderful *P2015* code. I am beginning to think VW doesn't know how to build a quality product. Another issue unrelated to the 2.0T, my VW recently had the overheating 30-amp fuse problem that melts the fuse and fuse block housing while also causing nearly all lights on the right half of the car to go out. Supposedly the 30-amp fuse wasn't made to carry 25-28 amps continuously causing the fuse insulator plastic to melt. There is a service bulletin for the Golf and Jetta but the EOS has the same issue though VW has not issued a service bulletin for them yet. The newer version of the fuse has a better insulator which if replaced early can prevent the damage to the plastic fuse block housing.

Thanks for helping us. I have little question if possible. I was getting p2015 and installed bracket. It is 2.0 TDI CR with plastic intake manifold. Mechanic needed to take away manifold to install bracket, he disconnected fuel lines from high pressure fuel pump because they were covering intake manifold. Anyway, long story short, no more p2015 but after this engine started to work louder, after few days i noticed he did not tightened fuel line bolt from high pressure fuel pump to rail and the fuel was leaking under high pressure fuel pump, including revving up on idle to compensate for the pressure i guess. I visited mechanic once again and he fixed this by tightening the screw but engine still works louder along the vibrations on idle, no revving on idle anymore. Is it possible that 'ecu/computer' needs to learn new settings while driving, or there is 'air' in fuel lines? is it possible that he damaged hpfp because he did not tightened fuel line from hpfp to rail? or something else? thanks a lot to anyone having time to help me out

I have no codes accept, misfire on 2,3 cyl. I have changed everything, plugs, coils, injectors, carbon cleaning, compression test ok. Misfire occurs on startups cold or Hot. It feels like too much air or lack of air or fuel and then it stabilizes in 5-10 seconds. It’s a 2016 TFSI 2.0T. Audi A6 Once I cleaned Intake with a carb cleaner reinstalled it, the misfire disappeared for a week. Then re appeared. I’m leaning towards the intake replacement, I’m watching these videos and thinking if I should. I have thrown so many parts at this I’m having second thoughts…. Driving around with check engine light. Hopefully you have some insight… It runs perfectly fine after the misfire on startup. Loads of power.

Update: I removed the valve, cleaned it with brake cleaner, applied epoxy to the female end of the valve, reinstalled, connected the rod and let sit for a few hours. The valve did not pop out after a couple hundred miles where it would pop every 20 or so before epoxying. I sold the car a few days later and explained to the buyer that the intake manifold would most likely need replaced in the near future.

I ended up paying them $2,500 for parts, labor, etc on top of all of the parts that I changed. The whole top of the motor was changed and the fuel pump in the tank. It didn’t have any build up inside it. The manifold was replaced and all. It was probably a tiny sensor or something. I went through 7 sets of plugs and coils and it misfired as soon as it was started. It would run fine if I started it, went straight into gear and pulled out. If I didn’t it was undriveable. I did everything in my power to fix it. I’ve never seen a more fucked up vehicle in my life. They really dropped the ball on those cars. I really wish I could have fixed it but instead I had to just let it go back. That car will always be one of my biggest regrets. I wish I’d had someone that had the knowledge to fix it.

@@amandacarter7532 I'm sorry to hear about that. Messed up how they charged you so much and you still had problems. It is rare tp come across the right person that knows these cars. Its like a secret. Maybe one day I start a youtube page to help people. Just be soooo bidy. What you described sounds like a PCM or wiring issue, another notorious problem with these but relatively easy cheep fix once discovered. I've had several woth the issues you described and turned out to be a wiring issue. Many will disagree bit I think these should never be tuned. So sorry to hear about your story because these have really good potential if repaired right. Well wishes.

where would the intake manifold leak from I'm getting the same error message p2015 it says leak in the intake manifold. when I would drive my car and I would give it gas to go faster I would get this squealing sound. I have a video of it. If you have any insight! that would be great !

The 2015 is specific to the intake manifold runner. If you have an intake leak and the sound you describe, sounds like you have a failed PCV valve.

it could be the armature popped out, there is a seal in there and if the armature comes out a little it will not seal correctly, giving crappy idle and both vac and boost leaks. You have probably fixed it already as you posted 5 months ago. just posting for future readers ...

I dont think so, in my opinion. The issue I believe which causes multiple issues surrounding the intake and random misfires is carbon buildup. Intake valves on these are notorious for carbon. And if buildup is in the valves, it is certainly in the intake flaps, etc.

I'm curious if anyone has completely disassembled the "flapper" assembly from the manifold? I'm about a week away from pulling my intake due to a failure and presumably massive carbon build-up and although a new intake would be a rational fix, I've already had one replaced under warranty and am now outside the extension time-line.

I know this video is a little older but here I am in 2023 and I have a 2016 Tiguan with 85K miles and the local VW dealership confirmed there is an extended warranty for this part. I'm taking my car in to have it fixed under warranty.

Yeah plastic shit, and a shit ton of pieces along with a sensor? Perfect recipe for maintenance issues. I’m probably just gonna get a old miata lol. Also yes I have this dumbass code which will cost me a penny whether the dealer fixes it or not.
