What happens if you overtighten the main nut? My rebuilt turbo doesn't work and I'm thinking it's because I gave it a 120* turn because I marked the nut and the compressor wheel and lined it up. I also think it could be oil starvation as I used an old braided feed. I couldn't feel any play before installation

Is the compressor wheel in this video stock size, or is it larger? I know the factory compressor wheel in this turbo is not 6+6 blade.

Was there a O-Ring on the exhaust/manifold/housing to cartrage? I don’t see one on mine? How does it seal? Also broke one of the torx bolts holding that vnt mechanism, will it be a problem just to put two? Looks like it sorta floats around anyway ?

Hi, a member replied with the heat shield being installed backwards. I will confirm because I assembled it as you show and the heat shield was rattling in the turbo hitting the turbine wheel. You really need to update this video. It caused a lot of work for me to have to remove the turbo only to flip over the heat shield. The heat shield is concave so the high part of the shield hits the turbo body. You didn't reply to the viewer who mentioned it earlier. Maybe you will this time. Thanks

None of the Video's that I have watched, including this video, talk of the side to side shaft 'play' which to the novice appears to be excessive play. When the engine is started and there is oil pressure, all is fine because the shaft and bearing are on a cushion of oil. Anyway, this is a good video.

  • @engelberthumperdinck2235

It depends if its a ball bearing or journal bearing mate, ball bearing will have no side to side play unless its shagged but the journal bearing your talking about will have...but most turbos are floating bearings anyway these days

I just followed his instructions and started the car, to say the rattle was bad is an understatement. It sounded like a cat dying. Have to strip and redo the shield the right way.... Also because the shield is in reverse, no boost.

I rebuilt it, just like in the video but did not do the front collar because I was afraid of braking a the fragile aluminium compressor plate by removing the collar. Now its still spilling oil. Help appreciated, cheers!

It's not your turbo but crankcase ventilation that comes from top of the engine all of them do that more or less if the seal for turbo intake side is not holding that means you need to tighten up just a notch and recheck everything. Might be leaking between the inlet hose and turbo itself it just finds a weak spot were to push it out if nkt it goes true the intercooler to egr spills it out makes a mess there and carrying on the same dirty way goes right in to the inlet manifold and landson your valves and makes a right mess and if you drive like a granny then the egr gets clogged up and all this stoopid mess if you ask me just because that valve in the crankcase is not doing its job try replacing valve cover with super expensive new one and this will fix it for a while ahh and yes you still need to address the issue with turbo and yes you need to remove all the inlet pipes to clean them up and clean the sensor if you have them with a proper cleaner. Have a nice day

Thoughts on using oven cleaner for cleaning the turbo to get rid of code 1557? The fins quit moving and it looses boost because the ring is dirty and it can't adjust boost accordingly? So what are your thoughts on using oven cleaner?

I couldn't believe there's a rubber seal on the turbo u rebuilt, I figured a turbo gets pretty hot for a rubber seal.

I reconditioned many turbos in my career. I always used a socket in a vise to hold the turbine end of the shaft and another socket on a tee handle to tighten the shaft nut. I would be very afraid of doing this his way, afraid of bending the very small shaft.
